TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran and Uruguay believe they can boost bilateral trade through bartering oil for basic goods.

In a webinar held on Saturday by Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mine and Agriculture (ICCIMA), Iranian and Uruguayan business activists explored ways for expansion of trade between the two states.

Head of International Affairs of ICCIMA Mr. Mohammadreza Karbasi in the webinar said there is possibility for provision of oil and petrochemical products required by Uruguay through bartering them for basic goods like rice and meat.

He said Iran’s trade with Uruguay during the 8-year Iraqi war was in high level through bartering oil for rice, adding that in a condition that Iran’s trade volume with some countries of the Latin American region is over $2b of direct trade, the trade volume of Iran with Uruguay has been very low and insignificant in recent years.

Karbasi emphasized that exchange of economic data and information between the two states, exchange of trade delegation and participation in the exhibitions. He then referred to the joint cooperation and investment considering experiences of the two states in creating industrial, agro, technological sets for exports to the third party countries.

He added that both countries can sign basic agreements (preferential trade, free trade) for paving the path of trade of the two states. Karbasi then pointed to the signing of the MoU between the two states in the field of livestock health and also plant quarantine that they can be a ground for the growth of bilateral relations of the two states.

In the meeting both sides called for holding B2B meetings between member companies and trade and economic enterprises of the chambers of commerce of Iran and Uruguay virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Karbasi also said Expo 2020 Dubai has provided a good ground in the post-COVID for Uruguayan companies to get in touch with their Iranian counterparts. He then pointed to the capacities of Mercosur (South American trade bloc) for exports of Iranian products to that region.

Then director of institute for economic and foreign trade studies of Chamber of Commerce and Services of Uruguay Ms. Ana Laura Fernandez, for her part, said that the chamber is ready to negotiate with the member states and explore grounds for cooperation, and identify the potential capacities for cooperation.

She added that the chamber has had coordination with Iran’s embassy in Uruguay for helping Uruguayan companies in identifying Iran’s market and it will be ready for holding B2B sessions in months of February and March 2022.

Fernandez reiterated that Uruguay Chamber has now representative in the EXPO 2020 Dubai but Uruguayan President to visit the expo on February 21 which has been named after Uruguay by the organizers. She added that 21 companies custodian of Uruguayan foreign trade are in charge of designing the Uruguayan pavilion in the exhibition.

The build-up to Friday’s quarter-final clash between France and Uruguay has been dominated by individuals, but it may be the South Americans’ almost unbreachable four-man defence which decides the result.

While Uruguay sweat on the fitness of striker Edinson Cavani, it should be remembered that La Celeste’s progress in Russia has been built upon their defence as much as their A-list attack.

And while France pin their hopes on Kylian Mbappe, it is unlikely that the teenage superstar has encountered a defence quite like Uruguay’s.

The mouth-watering last-eight tie in Nizhny Novgorod is likely to be decided by a battle between Uruguay’s stifling backline and the speed of Mbappe, 19.

Led by captain Diego Godin, and including Jose Gimenez, Martin Caceres and Diego Laxalt, along with goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, Uruguay’s defence have the joint-best record at the World Cup.

They passed through the group stage without conceding a goal, and the only player to score against Uruguay was Portugal’s Pepe in the last 16, and that was ultimately in vain.

Brazil are the only other team to have conceded just the solitary goal so far.

Uruguay have conceded three fewer goals than France. Both teams have scored seven times.

Between them, the experienced defence have over 350 international caps between them. They are supremely well-organised and have already served notice that Mbappe will not have the same kind of freedom he enjoyed against Argentina.

“If you let France have space it will be very difficult,” Uruguay’s coach Oscar Tabarez said after securing a place in the quarter-finals.

And he has also insisted that he is happy to cede possession to France in a bid to make the last four.

France’s conundrum against Uruguay is knowing best how to utilise Mbappe and his fellow attacking danger, Antoine Griezmann.

The French limped through their group stage but burst to life in their exhilarating 4-3 last-16 win over Argentina, inspired by Paris Saint-Germain’s $220 million (188-million-euro) Mbappe.

Didier Deschamps, France’s coach, has already indicated that he is expecting a different kind of game from “solid” Uruguay from the seven-goal thriller in Kazan.

The match is likely to be unsurprising, if not only for tactics, but also because of those involved.

Whoever — and however — decides the match is likely to have to get one over on a domestic teammate.

Cavani, who may play some part despite his calf injury, plays with Mbappe and PSG.

Godin and Gimenez are colleagues — and close friends — with Griezmann, Rodrigo Bentancur and Blaise Matuidi play for Juventus, while Luiz Suarez and French defender Samuel Umtiti play for Barcelona.

Uruguay and host nation Russia progressed to the World Cup knockout rounds on Wednesday as Cristiano Ronaldo took an early lead in the race for the Golden Boot.

A single goal from Luis Suarez was enough to give Uruguay victory against Saudi Arabia, leaving them on six points along with Russia and condemning Egypt and the Saudis to an early exit.

Russia and Uruguay will face one of the top two from Group B in the last 16 — either Portugal, Spain or Iran.

Suarez took advantage of a goalkeeping error by Mohammed Al-Owais in Rostov-on-Don to put his side ahead midway through the first half and the Saudis could not respond.

Barcelona forward Suarez has exited the last two World Cups in disgrace after being sent off for a goal-line handball against Ghana in 2010, and he infamously sank his teeth into Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in 2014.

In the earlier game, in Group B, Ronaldo netted his fourth goal of the tournament in a 1-0 win against Morocco for European champions Portugal, ending the north Africans’ chances of progress.

AFP / YURI CORTEZPortugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo is leading the race for the Golden Boot in Russia

The five-time world player of the year scored with an early header to go with his hat-trick for the European champions against Spain in their tournament opener.

The Real Madrid player, who won his fifth Champions League crown last month, now has 85 international goals — a record for a European player.

“I’m happy I scored the goal but the most important thing is that we won the game. We have to think match by match in order to progress,” he said.

Disappointed Morocco coach Herve Renard said his side could take pride from their performances in Russia despite being out of the running to qualify for the last 16.

“We qualified for a World Cup after 20 years and we’ve showed that we can play football,” he said. “We do play football.”

– Spain stress –

In the later match in Group B, Spain head to Kazan to face Iran, still counting the cost of a chaotic run-up to the tournament during which Julen Lopetegui was sensationally sacked just two days before they opened their campaign.

Former international defender Fernando Hierro is now at the helm and has the job of steadying the ship and steering Andres Iniesta and his teammates into the last 16.

“It’s a crucial match that will determine our World Cup destiny,” said midfielder Isco of the Iran showdown.

“We want to score from the opening minute, even though that won’t be easy.”

AFP / SAEED KHANCoach Carlos Queiroz (C) concedes Iran now face one of the biggest challenges in their World Cup history, but maintains they can “make the impossible possible” against Spain

Iran kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win against Morocco, thanks to a late own goal by Aziz Bouhaddouz, piling the pressure on Spain at Kazan Arena.

Iran’s opening victory sparked celebrations in the streets of Tehran and throughout the Islamic republic.

Coach Carlos Queiroz concedes Iran now face one of the biggest challenges in their World Cup history, but maintains they can “make the impossible possible”.

“We are well aware of Spain’s reputation, so we’ll have to play our best game ever. In the end the football gods will decide,” said the former Real Madrid coach.

Iran have never beaten a European side at a World Cup — their only previous victory was a 2-1 win over the United States in France in 1998.

Hosts Russia beat Egypt 3-1 in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday, a result which paved the way for them to move into the next round despite pre-tournament expectations that they would struggle to get out of their group.

After a goalless first half, Egypt captain Ahmed Fathi scored an own goal before Denis Cheryshev struck and Artem Dzyuba added a third. Mohamed Salah scored a consolation penalty late on but it was not enough for the Pharaohs.

Coach Stansislav Cherchesov was asked if it was the happiest day of his life. “I hope,” he said, “there are more to come.”

Speaking in Iran-Uruguay joint economic meeting in the Uruguayan capital city of Montevideo on Wednesday, Mohammad Javad Zarif praised the long-standing bilateral relations between the two countries and nations, saying that the relations began more than 100 years ago.

Zarif expressed his happiness over attending the meeting, saying “I am very glad to be accompanied by an Iranian delegation from both public and private sectors in the fields of banking, investment, car manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, electrical and water industries, agriculture and food industries, higher education, urban transportation, and oil and petrochemicals,” adding that he is also accompanied by large Iranian knowledge-based companies at the joint meeting with Uruguayan trade, economic and industrial companies.”

The Iranian foreign minister said that the presence of the that large number of companies in the event from both countries shows willingness of the two sides to enhance bilateral trade and economic ties.

Zarif went on to emphasize “the geographical distance has never prevented the expansion of bilateral relations, and in the political and economic terms, Uruguay and Iran have always been reliable and good partners for each other in the two regions of Asia and Latin America.”

The Iranian foreign minister said that Iranian citizens know Uruguay with its rice as the most important Uruguayan product in Iran’s market, adding Uruguay was a customer for Iranian oil, especially in the 1990s.

Zarif called for expanding economic relations between the two countries saying “today, we have a duty to develop and diversify trade and economic relations between the two countries.”

Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran and his accompanying delegation arrived early Wednesday in Uruguay as part of his four-nation tour.
