TEHRAN – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei described the battle against the Zionist regime of Israel as a “sacred” one and a collective responsibility of the entire Muslim world, recommending efforts to diversify the continued fight against Tel Aviv.

In a message to the 2nd international conference of resistance scholars, held in Beirut, Ayatollah Khamenei asserted that the “heavy responsibility” to support Palestine lies with the entire Islamic world.

“Without a doubt, scholarly elites, clerics and politicians, as well as the officials of Muslim countries carry the heavier part of this responsibility; this is a sacred and well-ending Resistance. The Divine promise guarantees definite victory of the resistance,” the Leader said.

Describing the battle against Israel as a “holy” fight with a fortunate outcome, Imam Khamenei said Almighty God has pledged a definite victory in this battle.

“Your congress today represents part of this vast, public movement. May God help you succeed on this path. I recommend all individuals, who feel the importance of this great responsibility, to continue different methods of fighting against the usurper Zionist Regime.”

According to head of the Union of Resistance Scholars, Sheikh Maher Hamoud, more than 200 scholars from over 80 countries have taken part in the two-day event in Beirut.

“True Promise: Palestine between Balfour Declaration and Divine Promise” is the theme of the conference.

The first international conference of resistance scholars was held in Lebanon in May 2016.

TEHRAN – People are being urged not to ask their doctor for antibiotics as part of a new campaign aimed at tackling growing resistance to the drugs.

An estimated 5,000 people die every year in England because antibiotics no longer work for some infections, according to Public Health England (PHE), which has launched the Keep Antibiotics Working campaign.

England’s chief medical officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, has previously warned of a “post-antibiotic apocalypse”, where antibiotics no longer work for serious infections, the Guardian reported.

Davies said: “Without effective antibiotics, minor infections could become deadly and many medical advances could be at risk – surgery, chemotherapy and Caesareans could become simply too dangerous.

“But reducing inappropriate use of antibiotics can help us stay ahead of superbugs.

“The public has a critical role to play and can help by taking collective action.

“I welcome the launch of the Keep Antibiotics Working campaign, and remember that antibiotics are not always needed so always take your doctor’s advice.”

The government wants to see a further drop in the number of antibiotic prescriptions issues by GPs to tackle the threat from resistance. Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria change in such a way that the medication used to treat them – in this case antibiotics – becomes ineffective.

The PHE’s new campaign tells people to always trust their doctor, nurse or pharmacist on when to take antibiotics. It says that if they are prescribed, they should be taken as directed and never saved for later or shared with others.

Antibiotics do not work on many common conditions, such as colds, flu, earache, sore throats and some chest infections. However, people should see their GP if they have prolonged symptoms and develop other issues such as a sickness, a very high temperature or shortness of breath.

Melissa Mead, whose son William died from sepsis due to a chest infection that could have been treated with antibiotics, said she backed the campaign but warned there should be “less of a taboo” about prescribing antibiotics when needed.

William, from Cornwall, had been ill for six to eight weeks before he died. He had been seen by GPs six times before his death.

The doctors failed to diagnose a chest infection and eventual pneumonia which led to the sepsis that killed him. A report into his death said there was pressure on GPs to reduce antibiotic prescribing.

Mead said: “I think it’s right that we don’t use antibiotics flippantly. Over-use would prevent serious infections such as sepsis responding to treatment.

“I do, however, believe there should be less of a taboo about prescribing antibiotics when it is clinically evident to do so. Earlier intervention with antibiotics would have saved William’s life. It was clinically evident he needed them.”

Professor Paul Cosford, medical director at PHE, said: “Antibiotic resistance is not a distant threat, but is in fact one of the most dangerous global crises facing the modern world today.

“Taking antibiotics when you don’t need them puts you and your family at risk of developing infections which in turn cannot be easily treated with antibiotics.

“Without urgent action from all of us, common infections, minor injuries and routine operations will become much riskier.”

Experts have suggested that, in just over 30 years, antibiotic resistance will kill more people globally than cancer and diabetes combined.

Health minister Steve Brine said: “This government is firmly committed to combating drug-resistant infections and refuses to allow modern medicine to grind to a halt – simple steps can make a huge difference.”

Justine Roberts, founder of Mumsnet, said: “Many parents will know the anxiety and frustration that comes with worrying about a poorly child, while also fretting about missed days of school and work.

“The temptation to lobby for antibiotics can be overwhelming, so this Public Health England advice is welcome. The risks that come with the inappropriate use of antibiotics are just too great.”

TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called on the European Union to remain fully committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and also compel the US to live up to its commitments under the nuclear agreement by sending a “decisive message.”

“We expect the European Union, firstly, to carry out the JCPOA deal completely, and secondly, to press the US to honor its commitments under the JCPOA,” President Rouhani said on Saturday, stressing that Washington should be given a decisive message.

He made the comments in a meeting with President of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives Siegfried Bracke, here in Tehran.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency reports, Iran has fully honored its commitments under the JCPOA, the nuclear accord between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), the president added, stressing that all of the other parties to the deal should also fulfill their undertakings.

He also referred to the IAEA as the only entity that is authorized to verify Iran’s compliance with the nuclear agreement, in an apparent reaction to the US president who has repeatedly accused Iran of violating the spirit of the JCPOA.

Elsewhere in his comments, President Rouhani voiced his administration’s resolve to broaden ties with the EU, hoping that friendly countries, including Belgium, would participate more actively in the economic and trade interaction with Iran.

Bracke, for his part, said Belgium is determined to expand relations with Iran.

Highlighting the significance that Belgium and the EU attach to the JCPOA, the Belgian official said the European Union would do its utmost to fulfil the JCPOA undertakings.

Iran and the six powers reached a conclusion over the text of the nuclear deal in July 2015 and implemented it in January 2016.

Under the agreement, certain limits have been put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all nuclear-related bans against Tehran.

In all of its reports after coming into force of the JCPOA, the IAEA has verified the non-diversion of declared nuclear material in Iran as well as the Islamic Republic’s commitment to the nuclear deal.

TEHRAN – Parliament’s General Director for International Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said time was ripe for implementing political initiatives inside Syria.

He made the remarks at a meeting with Dutch Ambassador to Iran Susana Trestal on Tuesday morning in Tehran.

Early into the session, Amir-Abdollahian voiced satisfaction towards growing cooperation between Tehran and Amsterdam saying “dialogue and talk between parliamentary officials of the two countries could significantly enhance and expedite bilateral cooperation between the two sides.”

In the same line, he stated that Iran’s government would welcome exchange of parliamentary delegations.

The official, while pointing to recent developments in Myanmar and Rohingya Muslims’ genocide in the Southeast Asian country, condemned silence and indifference of the international community in the face of extremist crimes adding “we expect the European Union (EU) and the Netherlands to take appropriate stances and exercise efforts to prevent continuation of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.”

At another part of his remarks, Amir-Abdollahian touched upon field and political developments in Syria asserting “in view of recent victories obtained by the Syrian army over terrorists, the Arab country is gradually taking steps towards further peace.”

Parliament’s general director for international affairs, while referring to the slow rate of field developments in Syria which has paved the path for realizing political initiatives, explained that presence of terrorists in peace talks can hinder the process.

Dutch Ambassador to Iran Susana Trestal, for her part, underline the significance of boosting parliamentary ties between Iran and the Netherlands stating “strengthening these relations will help promote mutual understanding and familiarity of members of the two parliaments.”

On developments in Myanmar, she expressed regret towards the ongoing crises in the Southeast Asian country explaining that “recent incidents have been reflected in the Dutch media and due attention has been paid to brutal crimes.”

At the end of her remarks, the official said political solution remained as the only way out of the Syrian crisis and although the process has faced numerous ups and downs over recent years, the general trend can be evaluated as positive.
