Iran Ready to Continue Cooperation with UNIDO

TEHRAN (Iran News) According to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad, Hamzeh Rostampour, in a meeting with UNIDO’s fisheries representative, expressed gratitude to the Tehran UNIDO office for its persistent and effective efforts. These efforts included organizing a short-term training course for an Iranian delegation in Japan, facilitating visits by Japanese experts to Iran for knowledge exchange, and conducting educational workshops. Rostampour emphasized Iran’s keen interest in continuing its partnership with UNIDO.

As the Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad, Rostampour highlighted key priorities, including the adoption of longline tuna fishing methods by fishing vessels and boats, the development of Iran’s tuna value chain through improved quality, the production of diverse products, waste reduction, and the utilization of fishing byproducts. He also stressed the importance of strengthening both domestic and export markets for tuna.

Rostampour urged faster action to bring a Japanese vessel to Iran, addressing any potential obstacles or arranging for a pre-approved Iranian substitute vessel if necessary. “It would be ideal for Japanese experts to be stationed on the vessel to accelerate project implementation,” he noted. He also emphasized the need to install cooling systems at the Konarak fishing dock and on the designated vessel, adding that winches produced by Iranian companies should be purchased by UNIDO and installed on vessels in coordination with provincial fisheries authorities.

He further suggested that providing longline fishing equipment to fishermen would significantly speed up operations. Rostampour also called for upgrades to low-consumption fishing boat engines, proposals to maintain product quality onboard, the use of renewable energy in aquaculture farms, and the development of production projects for coastal villages and rural women’s communities.

Tomoshi Kome, UNIDO’s fisheries director, described the collaboration with Iran’s Fisheries Organization as highly productive, thanks to the effective fisheries working group. He confirmed that two cooling systems had been delivered to Iran’s shipping authority and requested that Iran’s Fisheries Organization draft a letter to extend the contract, to be sent through diplomatic channels.

Kome announced that Japanese experts would arrive in the coming months to install cooling systems and provide training. He expressed optimism about the future, stating, “We anticipate that Iranian tuna products, meeting set standards, will soon enter the Japanese market.”

At the start of the meeting, a report on the longline fishing program conducted between Iran’s Fisheries Organization and UNIDO was presented. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and sanctions, the collaboration was described as highly successful and satisfactory.

With these developments, Iran is poised to enhance its tuna industry, elevate its market presence, and strengthen its partnership with UNIDO.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in a latest report dubbed International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics 2023, has put the growth of Iran’s manufacturing value added (MVA) at 6.5 percent, placing the Islamic Republic above 164 countries worldwide.

The report has also put the MVA per capita of the country in 2022 at $825, while the figure was $712 in 2021.

According to the estimates of this international organization, the share of MVA in Iran’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022 was 14.7 percent, while the share of industrial products in the country’s total exports this year was 47.7 percent and the share of industrial sector in the country’s employment was estimated at 17.4 percent.

Based on the UNIDO report, among the countries whose MVA growth is lower than Iran in 2022, Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, Qatar, Russia, and the U.S. can be mentioned.

According to this report, industrial activities that were greatly reduced in 2020 under the influence of the coronavirus outbreak had an admirable revival in 2021, and in 2022 we have witnessed the return of the growth trend of the industrial sector to the period before the pandemic.

In 2022, the added value of the world’s industrial sector grew by 2.3 percent, but could not reach the 3.1 percent growth rate of the world’s GDP this year. Industrialized economies saw relatively good industrial growth in 2022. The added value of industrial production in high-income economies grew by 2.9 percent this year, while the figure was six percent for industrializing economies.

Iran’s industry sector also registered a growth of 5.1 percent in the first three months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21- June 21, 2023) while the country’s total economic growth in the said quarter was 3.4 percent.

The data released by the Statistical Center of Iran (SCI) show that the growth rate of the industry sector in the second quarter of the year was also significantly positive.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran, Japan and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) signed a trilateral agreement to cooperate on the third phase of a project for developing advanced fishery in the port city of Chabahar in southeastern Iran.

The €180,000 agreement was signed as a part of five cooperation documents between UNIDO and Japan at the UNIDO headquarters in Vienna, in presence of permanent representatives of Iran, Japan, Iraq, Pakistan, South Africa, and Uganda, reported Fars News Agency.

Japan had previously provided €680,000 to finance the first and second phases of the project.

In his statement during the signing ceremony, Kazem Gharib Abadi, Iran’s ambassador to the Vienna-based international organizations, underlined the strategic position of Chabahar port.

According to the official, Chabahar port provides facilitates for transiting commodities between countries located at the northern side of the Indian Ocean and Central Asian countries.

He stressed the significance of international cooperation to help boost the sustainable growth of the countries and called for sharing experience and technology to counter the challenges facing economic development.

Gharibabadi urged the need for an immediate lifting of illegal sanctions and restrictions imposed on certain countries which impedes their development.

As Iran’s only oceanic port, Chabahar consists of two separate ports named Shahid Kalantari and Shahid Beheshti, each of which has five berths.

Iran has awarded the development project of this port to India, and the South Asian country committed $500 million to build two new berths in this port.

Back in February, the Indian government announced that the country has doubled the allocated funding for the development of Iran’s Chabahar port in its national budget bill for 2020.

The Indian government has allocated nearly $14 million for the Chabahar Port project in the 2020 budget, while the allocation in the last budget was about $7 million.

He made the remarks on Monday at the 18th session of the General Conference of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) which started in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 3 November.

Iran has many capabilities and capacities in various sectors including human resources, natural resources, and infrastructure, he said.

One of Iran’s main goals is to help domestic companies in different industries to collaborate with international companies and organizations for technology exchange, he mentioned, adding that Iran is ready to cooperate with other developing countries in the industrial, technical and engineering sectors.

Ghobadian noted that industry is one of the most important sectors of the economy as well as the basis of growth and development of any country, emphasizing that it is impossible to achieve economic development without achieving industrial development first.

Referring to the eagerness of foreign companies and investors after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to cooperate with Iranian Industrial companies, he said that unfortunately, the opportunities were affected by US illegal behavior and unilateral actions against Iran.

The unilateral withdrawal of the US from JCPOA and re-imposition of illegal sanctions against Iran have had a devastating effect on foreign investment in Iran’s industrial sector, he added.

Accordingly, Iran expects UNIDO to completely fulfill its responsibility for the industrial development of the UN members, including Iran, Ghobadian mentioned.

The General Conference is UNIDO’s supreme policy-making organ where all member states meet once every two years. It determines the guiding principles and policies of the Organization and approves the budget and work program of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Iranian delegation consisting of ambassador to the IAEA, Kazem Gharib-Abadi, Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Barat Ghobadian, and Director General of the Office for Industrial Property at the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade Seyyed Mehdi Mirsalihi participated at the 18th session of the General Conference of UNIDO.

Iran’s permanent delegation to Vienna, attending the 47th session of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), delivered a statement to the conference and rebuked Washington for preventing the developing countries from achieving sustainable growth.

Iran also expressed concerns about UNIDO’s financial challenges, urging the United States to clear its debts to push forward the organization’s development plans.

Condemning the unilateral and illegitimate economic sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies against other countries, the statement warned about the negative repercussions of these measures on the cooperation between the member states and UNIDO and the implementation of joint projects with this organization.

The statement described the US’ unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposition of sanctions against Iran as “economic terrorism” and a clear “violation of human rights”, calling on the international community and UNIDO’s member states to adopt the necessary measures to oppose such abusive moves.
