Iran Warns U.S. of Strong Retaliation in Letter to UN Secretary-General

TEHRAN (Iran News) According to Iran’s diplomatic statement, the correspondence follows prior communications regarding ongoing threats from the United States to resort to force against the Islamic Republic. The letter cites multiple prior notes from December 30, 2025, and January 2, 9, 13, 22, and 28, 2026, expressing Iran’s concerns over continuous U.S. threats of military intervention.

The letter explicitly references recent remarks made by the President of the United States, who publicly suggested the potential use of Diego Garcia military base as a launch point for possible operations against Iran. Tehran described such statements as violations of the UN Charter and international law, warning that they risk plunging the region into a new cycle of crisis and instability.

In the letter, Iran emphasizes that it is not seeking war but is prepared to respond decisively if attacked. “We will not be the initiators of any conflict, but if Iran faces military aggression, it will respond firmly, and all bases, facilities, and assets of the hostile forces in the region will be considered legitimate targets,” the letter states. The communication underlines that any consequences resulting from such military confrontations would fall directly upon the United States.

Iran’s representative further stressed that the recent U.S. threats cannot be dismissed as mere rhetoric, given the fragile security situation in the region and the continuous deployment and movement of U.S. military assets. “Such belligerent statements by the President of the United States reflect a real danger of military aggression with potentially disastrous consequences for regional stability, peace, and international security,” the letter says.

The Iranian letter also highlighted the country’s ongoing engagement in constructive nuclear dialogue with the United States. It stressed that Iran has participated in these talks in good faith to address concerns regarding its peaceful nuclear program. Tehran reiterated its commitment to pursuing mutually acceptable, result-oriented solutions fully compliant with recognized international legal frameworks, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty, while ensuring that no state’s sovereign rights are violated.

Iran’s envoy emphasized that a sustainable and balanced solution remains possible if the United States approaches negotiations sincerely and demonstrates tangible respect for the UN Charter and binding international law. In this context, Iran has requested that the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council exercise their primary responsibility under the UN Charter to preserve international peace and security. Tehran urged immediate action to compel Washington to cease illegal threats of force, adhere to its obligations under Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, and refrain from any measures that could escalate tensions or trigger military confrontation.

The letter underscores that any failure to respond to unlawful U.S. threats could set a dangerous precedent, potentially normalizing the use of force as an acceptable tool of foreign policy. Tehran warned that continued impunity could eventually endanger other independent states.

Reaffirming its stance, Iran declared that it is neither seeking tension nor war and will not initiate hostilities. However, the country will respond decisively, proportionally, and within the framework of its inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter if subjected to military aggression. All military installations, facilities, and assets of hostile forces in the region would, in such a scenario, become legitimate targets of Iran’s defensive operations.

In conclusion, the letter places full responsibility for any unpredictable consequences squarely on the United States, emphasizing the serious risks of conflict for regional and global peace. Tehran called on the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General to act promptly, warning that delays in addressing the threat could have irreversible consequences.

This letter represents the latest in a series of tense diplomatic exchanges between Iran and the United States, highlighting growing international concern over the potential for escalation in the Middle East. It underscores Iran’s insistence on defending its sovereignty while engaging diplomatically to prevent further crises, even as it holds Washington accountable for provocative statements and actions.

The correspondence arrives amid ongoing discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program and the broader geopolitical dynamics in the region, reflecting the persistent fragility of international security architecture and the critical role of the United Nations in conflict prevention.

Iran Urges Fair Process in Selecting Next UN Chief

TEHRAN (Iran News) In a statement during a Security Council session on Monday, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravan,i articulated Iran’s vision for principled and effective UN leadership, grounding his remarks in the core provisions of the UN Charter.

He stated that the power granted by Article 99, allowing the Secretary-General to bring threats to international peace before the Council, has been “paralyzed by the veto of a permanent member over the past two years.”

This period, he said, included “the genocidal war and grave war crimes committed by the Israeli regime in Gaza, the killing of UN humanitarian personnel and UN peacekeepers, and acts of aggression against regional countries.”

He added that in these critical moments, the exceptional authority entrusted to the Secretary-General under Article 99 of the Charter “has not been exercised fully, in a timely manner, or with the rigor required by the circumstances.”

Turning to Article 100, Iravani emphasized that the next Secretary-General must embody “independence and integrity.”

He warned that “a candidate who has deliberately failed to uphold the UN Charter—or to condemn unlawful military attacks against safeguarded, peaceful nuclear facilities … undermines confidence in his ability to serve as a faithful guardian of the Charter and to discharge his duties independently, impartially, and without political bias or fear of powerful States, as required under the Charter.”

The envoy was referring to the June strikes carried out by the US and Israel against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, which were under the UN supervision. These illegal acts of aggression also targeted Iranian nuclear scientists. Yet the IAEA, whose director general, Rafael Grossi, has now announced his candidacy for the role of UN Secretary-General, chose not to condemn the attacks.

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) refrains from condemning the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists during the illegal Israeli-US aggression, saying the issue is not within his responsibilities.

The ambassador also highlighted Article 105 of the Charter, stating that the Secretary-General has “a clear and non-derogable responsibility” to safeguard the rights and privileges of representatives and to ensure the full and equal participation of all Member States.

He said violations such as visa denials, movement restrictions, or harassment must be addressed decisively and without selectivity by the UN Secretariat, noting that such protections are legally binding on the host country.

“Failure to do so weakens the United Nations and erodes the principle of sovereign equality at the heart of the UN system,” he added.

Iravani called for “a transparent and inclusive selection process,” while also voicing readiness to engage in meaningful discussions throughout this process, to work with the next Secretary-General “to advance peace, justice, and the purposes and principles of the Charter.”

The term of the current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, will end on December 31, 2026. The terms of service of the UN Secretary-General are not limited, but the longest term of office of the UN Secretary-General has been 10 years.

According to the current procedure, the Secretary-General should not be chosen from among the five permanent members of the Security Council, including Russia, Britain, China, the United States and France.

Elections or term extensions are also coming up in many other UN bodies.

Envoy: UN and Security Council should unequivocally condemn terrorist attack in Iran

TEHRAN (Iran News) Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani said in a letter to the Security Council regarding the terrorist attack in Sistan and Baluchestan in Southeastern Iran that the Islamic Republic calls on the Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to condemn this heinous act of terrorism in the strongest possible terms and without any ambiguity.

Iravani said that any double standards or selective approach in condemning terrorism is unacceptable and will only undermine the credibility of the Security Council.

The full text of Iravani’s letter is as follows:

In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

Excellency,

Further to our letter dated 28 July 2025 (A/79/978-S/2025/489), I am writing to draw your urgent attention to yet another heinous terrorist attack committed by the armed terrorist group Jaish al-Adl in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In the early hours of today afternoon, 22 August, in the Damen district of Iranshahr, Sistan and Baluchestan Province, armed terrorists of Jaish al-Adl ambushed two vehicles carrying Iranian law enforcement officers. This cowardly assault resulted in the martyrdom of five police officers.

The terrorist group of Jaish al-Adl has publicly and unequivocally claimed responsibility for this crime. This atrocity follows another barbaric terrorist attack on 26 July 2025, when three armed members of Jaish al-Adl launched a coordinated assault on a courthouse in Zahedan, the provincial capital of Sistan and Baluchestan. In that deliberate targeting of civilians, six innocent people, including a mother and her six-month-old baby, tragically lost their lives, and 24 others were injured. “UN ”

These appalling crimes, which deliberately targeted law enforcement officers, civilians, and even children, are flagrant violations of international law, including international humanitarian law, They expose once again the inhumane, terrorist, and extremist nature of Jaish al-Adl and the serious threat it poses to peace and security in the region. This terrorist group continues to operate with links to, and backing from, Daesh-K and foreign sponsors, in blatant impunity.

The Islamic Republic of Iran calls on the Security Council and the Secretary-General to unequivocally condemn this heinous act of terrorism in the strongest possible terms.

Any double standards or selective approaches in the condemnation of terrorism are unacceptable and only undermine the credibility of the Security Council. Furthermore, those who provide support, shelter, or any form of facilitation to such terrorist groups bear full responsibility for their crimes and must be held fully accountable.

I would be grateful if you would circulate this letter as a document of the Security Council and of the General Assembly under agenda item 110, “ Measures to eliminate international terrorism. ”

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration

Amir Saeid Iravani

Ambassador

Permanent Representative

TEHRAN (Iran News) With all eyes focusing on the tumultuous events shaping Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government, the Israeli regime has seized the momentum to make territorial gains in Syria’s west while also destroying most Syrian military capabilities in an intensive bombing campaign.

Throughout the past week, Israeli forces struck nearly 500 targets across Syria, including in the capital Damascus, hitting ammunition depots, air defense installations and naval bases.

Israeli authorities justified the attacks on security grounds, saying they want to avoid weapons falling into the hands of “extremists”.

The Zionist regime has also pressed deeper into Syrian territory, occupying additional land along the already occupied Golan Heights.

The Israeli troops have moved into an officially designated demilitarized zone with Syria, which was part of a 1974 UN-brokered disengagement agreement. The UN has condemned the move saying it is a violation of the deal, Al Jazeera reported.

Israeli authorities say the move is temporary but have failed to provide any timetable for their withdrawal, raising concerns that the Zionist regime would seek to occupy or annex the area permanently.

The Golan Heights in Syria was occupied by Israel in the 1967 war and fully annexed in 1981 – a move not recognized by most of the international community.

In the meantime, Jordan is going to host a crisis summit on Syria over the weekend to be attended by top diplomats from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Turkey, the US, the European Union and the UN.

Carl Skau, deputy executive director of the UN World Food Program (WFP), has warned that Syria is facing the fallout from a 13-year civil war, a surge in arrivals from the Israel-Hezbollah war in neighboring Lebanon, and the unexpected removal of Bashar al-Assad.

While the situation in Syria’s largest city Aleppo is “quite calm and orderly”, Skau said, there’s still uncertainty in Damascus, where markets are disrupted, currency values have dropped, food prices are rising, and transport isn’t operational.

TEHRAN (Iran News) The genocidal offensive, now in its ninth day, has drawn widespread condemnation, with reports of hundreds of Palestinians killed and cut off from basic supplies.

Israeli forces are committing “another massacre” in the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, according to Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories. She stated that Palestinian civilians are being killed “in groups and one by one” amid “unspeakable cruelty and sadism” by Israeli troops, whom she described as “willing executioners” of a genocidal plan.

Albanese further criticized the attacks, which are being conducted with the support of Western countries and their military supplies. “It blows my mind to think that WE KNOW what Israel is doing and altogether we cannot stop it. Looking at where we were 100 years ago, no much progress has been achieved,” she said in a post on X.

The Israeli military has been conducting a large-scale incursion in northern Gaza for nine days, targeting the densely populated Jabalia camp. The region is home to approximately 400,000 Palestinians who have been trapped in the area, unable to leave despite Israeli-issued evacuation orders. The residents are without access to food, water, or other essentials, and are continuously subjected to bombardment, effectively cutting them off from the outside world.

Humanitarian groups have described the situation as a “systematic mass slaughter,” with at least 200 people killed since the ground offensive began earlier this month. Civil defense workers have reported that over 70 bodies remain unrecovered on the streets of Jabalia, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanoon, as they are unable to retrieve them due to ongoing Israeli strikes.

“This is a continuation of genocidal acts that began a year ago,” said Ambassador Majed Bamya, the deputy permanent observer of Palestine to the UN. He condemned Israel’s siege of northern Gaza, which has now entered its ninth day. “What is happening in northern Gaza now is a genocide within the genocide,” Bamya stated in a post on X.

Osama Hamdan, a Hamas representative in Lebanon, told Al Jazeera that Israel has blocked food supplies from entering northern Gaza for the past ten days. He described the Israeli military’s recent actions in Jabalia as “a crime against humanity.”

Military analyst Elijah Magnier echoed the gravity of the situation, explaining that Israel’s siege and repeated attempts to seize control of the Jabalia camp have resulted in heavy casualties. “The Israeli army pushed their tanks to surround the Jabalia camp. This is the third time they are trying to break into the camp after failing the first and second time,” Magnier told Al Jazeera. “They bombarded and destroyed large parts of it in the previous attempts, causing large numbers of casualties,” he added. “Their operation now aims at controlling the Jabalia camp, if they can this time. They have not managed that so far.”

The Israeli military onslaught in Gaza and Lebanon continue to face widespread condemnation as the humanitarian situation worsens in northern Gaza, with no sign of a resolution.

TEHRAN (Iran News) These measures, the UN body noted, defy the July 19 ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). In its Advisory Opinion, the ICJ concluded that Israel’s policies and practices amount to the annexation of substantial parts of the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The court further called for the evacuation of all settlers from these territories.

The press release highlighted that illegal settlements, settler violence, and the presence of settlers are the primary causes of numerous human rights violations in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem al-Quds. The statement emphasized that the recently-announced settlement construction in Nahal Heletz, west of Bethlehem, remains unlawful under international law.

“In the case of Nahal Heletz, the building of a new settlement in this strategic area severely compromises the livelihoods, safety, and movement of Palestinians living in five surrounding villages, while posing a significant threat to the contiguity and viability of a Palestinian state,” the UN office stated.

On Wednesday, Israel approved the construction of the new settlement on a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Bethlehem, amidst ongoing military operations across the occupied Palestinian territories.

Israel’s finance minister Bezalel Smotrich announced that his office had “completed its work and published a plan for the new Nahal Heletz settlement in Gush Etzion.”

The majority of United Nations member states regard the settlements built in the West Bank and other territories seized by Israel during the 1967 Middle East war as illegal under international law.

This latest approval comes amid escalating tensions in the West Bank and East Al-Quds, and in the Gaza Strip where the Israeli genocidal war has resulted in the deaths of over 40,000 Palestinians since October 7, 2023.
