In a Tuesday tweet, Russia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov wrote, “Some people try to present the expiration of arms trade restrictions (de-jure and de-facto not what we used to call arms embargo) with regard to Iran on 18 October as somewhat as a catastrophe.”

“In fact, it will simply mean the implementation of one of the provisions of 2231 UNSC res,” he stressed.

In reaction to Rep. Mike Gallagher’s remarks on accusing China and Russia of failure to approve the resolution on extending Iran’s arms embargo, he wrote, “You forgot that it is not about Russia and China only. In order to get US draft resolution approved Washington needed at least 9 votes in favor.”

“It got just one – the Dominican Republic who apparently is a major factor in the Persian Gulf. Don’t you think that something is wrong with the US?” he added.

Earlier, Ulyanov called the US attempt to extend arms embargo unjustifiable, saying it was in violation of UNSC Resolution 2231.

The UN Security Council rejected a US bid to extend an arms embargo on Iran on Friday, which is due to expire in October.

Besides the United States, only the Dominican Republic voted in favor of the draft. China and Russia voted against the text, and the remaining 11 Security Council members, including the European allies of the United States, abstained.

The United States has become isolated over Iran at the Security Council following President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the multilateral Iran nuclear deal 2018.

Iran had said that the US resolution would fail to gain the required support at the Security Council, pointing out that Washington has no legal right to invoke a snapback mechanism to reinstate sanctions against Tehran under the 2015 nuclear deal that the US unilaterally left in May 2018.

The US has stepped up attempts aimed at extending the UN arms ban on Iran that is set to expire as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which has been endorsed by Security Council Resolution 2231.

“We must do it. Opponents of the Iran deal ask if it can survive,” he tweeted.

“Despite all the problems the answer is yes provided that the JCPOA parties are united in efforts to preserve the deal,” Ulyanov answered.

“The EU as the coordinator has also a vital role,” he underlined.

Ulyanov’s tweet came while Barbara Slavin, the acting director of Future of Iran Initiative at the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center, told Mehr news that the Trump administration is seeking to “further undermine the JCPOA” so that the international nuclear agreement cannot be revived by a future government in the US.

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell on Wednesday called on Europe to do more to win the satisfaction of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the JCPOA.

Iran nuclear deal is under pressure, he said, adding that it is an urgent need to preserve the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

“Today, the JCPOA is under great pressure on multiple fronts. I am convinced that action to preserve it is not just necessary but urgent. It took more than 12 years for the international community and Iran to bridge their differences and conclude a deal. If the JCPOA is lost, no other comprehensive or effective alternative will be waiting around the corner,” Josep Borrell said in a statement published on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of signing JCPOA.

Borrell said that the EU will do everything possible together with other parties to preserve Iran’s nuclear deal – the JCPOA.

In a Saturday tweet, Ulyanov wrote, “Today’s #IAEA report on safeguards implementation in #Iran was published by western news agencies 5 minutes after its distribution among members of the Board of Governors.”

“The regime of confidentiality in the Agency doesn’t work at all,” he added.

Ulyanov wrote, “The leak of IAEA confidential report on #Iran is outrageous, but it may have one positive implication,” adding, “It is clear from the content that the issue is of no immediate proliferation concern. Events (if any) took place 20 years ago. The problem lies in a different dimension.”

In another tweet, he said, “I am absolutely sure that the leak of confidential #IAEA reports on #Iran isn’t the fault of Secretariat of the Agency.”

“This is the responsibility of some individual Member States who leak the reports to #US media in a hope that they will create an unhealthy atmosphere around Iran,” he added.

Earlier, Iran’s Permanent Ambassador to the International Organizations in Vienna Kazem Gharibabadi said that the IAEA’s new report on JCPOA both signifies the continuation of IAEA’s verification activities and portrays Iran’s actions in implementing its decisions to suspend its JCPOA commitments.
