Manchester City starlet Phil Foden scored twice as England came from behind to crush Spain 5-2 in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup final on Saturday.

Victory added to England’s growing list of youth honors – they have won the Under-20 World Cup and European Under-19 championship this year – and was revenge for losing the Under-17 European Championship final to Spain in May.

On top of Foden’s second half brace, Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster scored his seventh goal of the tournament and Morgan Gibbs-White and Marc Guehi also pierced the normally solid Spanish defense at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

Gibbs White’s low shot in the first minute of a fierce-paced final in front of 66,600 fans produced a lightning reflex save from Alvaro Fernandez in the Spanish goal. But Spain captain Abel Ruiz masterminded the first goal in the 10th minute, heading the ball down in the goal area for Barcelona teammate Sergio Gomez to push the ball in the net.

On 31 minutes Ruiz again opened the England defense and laid the ball on for Cesar Gelabert who found Gomez on the other side of the area waiting to rocket a shot past goalkeeper Curtis Anderson.

England fought hard to get back into the game. Callum Hudson-Odoi fired a right foot shot onto the post with Fernandez beaten.

The pressure paid off in the 44th minute when Steven Sessegnon crossed from the right and an unmarked Brewster headed past Fernandez. With the final action of the half, Brewster sent a 22-metre free kick at the goal which Fernandez just tipped over the bar.

The second resumed at a furious pace with England pushing hard for an equalizer. The breakthrough came in the 58th minute when Foden took the ball into the Spain penalty area and laid it on to Sessegnon who found Gibbs-White with plenty of space to fire the ball past Fernandez.

Hudson-Odoi set up the crucial third goal in the 69th minute, crossing from the left after beating two Spanish defenders and Foden shot in unmarked.

Guehi chested the ball in amid a goalmouth scramble to seal victory and set up a niggly finale in which Brewster was booked.

Earlier Brazil beat Mali 2-0 in the third-place playoff to earn a consolation after they lost to England in the semi-final.

Alan scored in the 55th minute when Mali goalkeeper Youssouf Koita fumbled the Palmeiras striker’s shot which went past him into the net. Substitute Yuri Alberto scored the second in the 88th minute. With the Mali defense tiring, Brenner crossed from the right and Yuri was unmarked to fire in from close range.

Iran had a tournament to remember, topping its group with nine points (beating Germany 4-0 in the process) and reaching the quarter-final stage, where it bowed out to Spain, who has since reached the final.

Arguably its finest performer was midfield wonder Younes Delfi, who netted two of the four goals against Germany and won a penalty against Costa Rica.

He was absent for the quarter-final tussle with Spain; would it have been a different story were he available?

Spain will face England in the final match on Saturday while Mali play Brazil in third-placed match.

Iran defeated Mexico 2-1 to book a place in the tournament’s quarterfinals, where they will face European champion Spain.

“You can wait for more surprises, however we know that the toughest match in the World Cup starts now,” Chamanian said.

“I had said that the match against Mexico would be very tough. We predicted this,” said the 54-year-old coach.

Chamanian ensured that his side will be ready for the European champion in what will be its first-ever quarterfinal showing in the marquee event.

“After group stages, we organized and built our team. From the tactical aspect and from knowledge of the opponent we build again. And also from the mental aspect. Because we need to forget every match we played until now,” Chamanian said.

“Mexico was a tough team but we could have won the match with more goals. Altogether, I am satisfied with the way my boys played against Mexico,” he stated.

Iran qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Round of 16 with three wins over Guinea, Germany and Costa Rica.

Chamanian’s boys will face Mexico or Chile in the next stage on Tuesday.

”We have picked up nine out of nine points in the group stages, but the most important thing we must think about from now is the next round” Chamanian said.

“Indeed, our attack has been great but our defense also deserves all the praise it can get. We have conceded only one goal in the tournament and did not allow any clear opportunities to our opponents, this is something we can build on for our future opponents as well,” he added.

”We must not forget that we are not the only team that finished with nine points. Winning all three games does not make us automatic title contenders, there are still a lot of good teams that we must respect. However, it is still a very important achievement for the team and players,” Chamanian concluded.
