Speaking to ILNA, Mr. Mehdi Kazemi said that sanctions have affected imports, especially imports of the auto spare parts but the country has tried to import the auto-parts from China and Turkey to replace the European parts. He admitted that due to the U.S. sanctions, fewer original parts have been imported but the imported parts are good quality. He noted that those parts which are manufactured in Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands have faced problems in being exported to Iran. He admitted that the parts which are provided via the offices of the companies in Turkey or the UAE cos the country 10 to 15 percent higher.

Kazemi reiterated that if the domestic manufacturers are unable to produce the parts, then the union will take action for the imports of the parts to meet the market demands otherwise they are imported via Turkey and China.

He went on to say that the union does its best good quality and first-class goods to be imported, reiterating that the low-quality parts in the market mostly belong to the previous years.

Kazemi noted that 50 t0 60 percent of required parts of Pride and Peugeot cars are manufactured domestically, adding that the parts of cars which have been rolling in the streets of the countries since years ago are mostly manufactured domestically.

He also warned people to be cautious about purchasing auto-parts from online-shops unless they are valid ones. He reiterated that all shops selling auto parts are obliged to put their licenses in their shops in order that the customers can see them.

He admitted that some online shops sell fake auto parts which create a headache for the customers and the officials.

Separately, the US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement that Pompeo and Cavusoglu spoke to “discuss the case of Pastor Andrew Brunson”.

“The secretary and foreign minister committed to continued discussions to resolve the matter and address other issues of common concern,” Nauert added.

The conversation follows Thursday’s phone call between Cavusoglu and Pompeo after Turkey responded to remarks made by US President Donald Trump when he threatened the country with sanctions unless Ankara released the detained American pastor.

In a move seen as an attempt to interfere with the judiciary of NATO-member Turkey, Trump tweeted: “The United States will impose large sanctions on Turkey for their longtime detainment of Pastor Andrew Brunson.”

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had responded to the threat in a tweet: “No one dictates Turkey. We will never tolerate threats from anybody. Rule of law is for everyone; no exception.”

Brunson was moved from jail and placed under house arrest Wednesday after being detained in the Aegean province of Izmir in December 2016.

He was charged with spying for the PKK — a designated terrorist group in the US and Turkey — and the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), the group Turkey accuses of orchestrating the defeated July 2016 coup attempt.

Earlier on Saturday, Cavusoglu also spoke with his Saudi counterpart Adel al-Jubeir.

iran is an important neighbor of Turkey, Turkish diplomatic sources said on Friday during a meeting with American officials to defend their country’s interests against the looming reimposition of US sanctions on Iran.

A delegation of US officials led by Deputy Treasury Secretary Marshall Billingslea met with Turkish representatives with the aim of seeking to avoid losing out from the sanctions, according to diplomatic sources as reported by Ahvalnews.com.

“Iran is an important neighbor of Turkey, in view of both our bilateral economic and commercial relations as well as our energy imports,” said Foreign Ministry sources, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

“Therefore, we will continue to monitor US sanctions within this framework.”

On US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the US would withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action—the Iran deal’s official name —and that sanctions on Iran would be reimposed, the sources said, “Following the US decision to withdraw from the JCPOA, the upcoming sanctions on Iran carry importance for Turkey,” Turkey’s state-run news agency Anadolu reported.

Importing more than half of its oil supplies from neighboring Iran, Turkey had earlier suggested that it did not intend to cut off trade with Iran, saying it was not obliged to abide by “unilateral” US decisions.

Turkey imported 3 million tons of crude oil from Iran in the first four months of 2018, making up 55% of crude supplies and 27% of its total energy imports.

In July 2015, the P5+1 group of countries—the US, UK, France, China and Russia, plus Germany—signed the JCPOA with Iran. Under the deal, world powers agreed to lift economic sanctions on Iran in return for the latter agreeing to limit the scope of its nuclear program. But on May 8, Trump announced that the US was unilaterally withdrawing.

“Our relevant authorities are carrying out necessary work for Turkey to avoid any negative impact from the upcoming sanctions. In this regard, we are holding consultations with our American counterparts,” said the source.

“Within this framework, we had discussions with a US delegation visiting Turkey on July 20.”

> Scaring Off Turkish Businessmen

The American officials also reportedly met with Turkish businessmen during the visit and warned private business owners that if they do business with Iran, they cannot do business with the American firms and they will be isolated from US markets.

One of Turkish businessmen who participated in the meeting told VOA that the US officials sternly warned Turkish private business owners about the Iran embargo during the meeting.

The Turkish businessman said, “I also participated [in] similar meetings during previous sanction periods on Iran. However, this is the first time I have ever heard [them speaking] so forcefully. [The] American side informed that those countries and companies [who] import oil and gas from Iran after November 4 will be sanctioned.”

Halkbank made international headlines last December with the trial in New York of Mehmet Hakan Atilla, an executive at the bank, who was convicted for helping Iran evade sanctions.

The trial included testimony from Reza Zarrab, a Turkish-Iranian gold trader at the center of the sanction-busting scheme, that implicated top Turkish officials, including Erdogan and government ministers.

The chief defendant in the case, Zarrab, pleaded guilty before trial and cooperated with the prosecution, testifying against Atilla.

Turkey has slammed the sentencing. In a statement issued last month, the Turkish Foreign Ministry called the trial against Turkish state-run Halkbank employee “an entirely feigned process which is inconsistent with the principle of a fair trial”.

The ministry alleged that the US court relied on “forged evidence and false statements” from members of the network of a US-based cleric accused of attempting to overthrow the Turkish government.

Now US prosecutors plan to appeal the length of the prison term for Atilla, as they had sought at least 15 years. Atilla has been in US custody since his arrest in March 2017 and received credit for time already served. He could be released by the middle of next year.

> US Sensitive to Effect of Iran Sanctions on Turkey

Washington is sensitive to the consequences of the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal on the Turkish economy, a senior US Treasury official said on Friday.

Billingslea briefed reporters in Ankara on discussions between his delegation and officials in Turkey.

On the US pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal, Billingslea said, “We are very sensitive to the effects that could be had on the Turkish economy. That’s what we’re discussing, the very specific matters of concern for both countries.”

He, however, warned that the treasury sanctions will be enforced “very, very aggressively and very comprehensively”.

Billingslea said they are also tracking gold trade with Iran.

“It would certainly be a very bad idea to think that when somebody is going to trade with Iran in gold and avoid the US sanctions if that occurs.”

“We’re not in a position to signal flexibility on oil trade at this stage but we need a lot more information and a lot more details before we could make such a signal,” he added.

Billingslea also advised Turkish companies to make an informed business decision if they want to continue to do business with Iran in the areas prohibited under US sanctions.

Turkey’s overall trade with Iran has been decreasing since 2013 following the sanctions. While bilateral trade between the countries exceeded $20 billion in 2012, it saw a dramatic fall to $14 billion. Recorded at $9 billion in 2016, bilateral trade with Iran gained momentum in 2017 and rose to $10.7

An exhibition dubbed ‘Immorality’ has recently opened at the art gallery of Istanbul’ Adahan Hotel, Turkish Daily Sabah reported on Monday.

The exhibition is organized through the efforts by Iranian artist and curator Tima Jam in cooperation with the Turkish Contemporary and Modern Art, and Blue Rhino Art.

Jam told Daily Sabah that she and other Iranian artists as well as their Turkish counterparts have organized the exhibition to express cultural union and solidarity.

According to Jam, the exhibition features the works of 11 Turkish and 11 Iranian artists.

She also said that ten Iranian artists continue their works in Iran while only one of them lives in Turkey.

Saying that the theme of the exhibition is ‘immortality,’ she noted that the artworks were chosen based on the exhibition’s theme and added that some of the artists produced new works for this exhibition.

“This exhibition tells the story of continuous rejuvenation, reincarnation and lasting existence of nature. It also reflects the continuous cycle of pieces which are stable and unchangeable,” Jam explained to Daily Sabah.

“Immortality” features artworks by Iranian artists Afshin Hosseinzadeh, Ali Motamadian, Dariush Hosseini, Fatemeh Divandari, Hamid Asadi, Morteza Khosvari, Navid Zafaralizade, Reza Hosseini, Saeed Asaidi and Saghar Daeiri and the works of their Turkish fellow artists Barış Sarıbaş, Dilara Matarcı, Erhan Özışıklı, Ferhat Salman, Gökhan Deniz, Görkem Usta, Gülveli Kaya, Özge Enginoz, Seydi Murat Koç, Daily Sabah’s report concluded.

TEHRAN– American political theorist Michael Walzer in an interview with MNA addressed the Turkish aggression on the Kurdish populated northern district of Afrin in Syria, saying no-one wants to condemn Turkey because no-one is prepared to fight for the Kurds.

While addressing Turkish aggression on the Kurdish populated northern district of Afrin in Syria, Prof. Walzer said, “the international community can’t be counted on to defend people in trouble; it doesn’t really exist as a real community.”

Below is a brief interview with Michael Walzer:

Recently, a group of people including you endorsed an open letter calling on world powers to stop Turkey’s aggression against Afrin. What was the purpose of that letter?

The need was urgent because of Turkish threats to attack the Kurdish enclave in Northern Syria. The Kurds are one of the Middle Eastern peoples most in need of protection, most in need of a state of their own, actually, though that doesn’t seem possible. If not a state, then some degree of autonomy wherever they live.

Why doesn’t the international community condemn the aggression of Turkey against Afrin?

The international community can’t be counted on to defend people in trouble; it doesn’t really exist as a “community.” And since no-one is prepared to fight for the Kurds, no-one wants to condemn Turkish aggression. The US should at least be providing the weapons that the Kurdish militia needs to fight the Turks, but I doubt that we are doing that.

The presence of the US and Turkey in Syria are both without the Syria government’s permission. What is your opinion on that?

I don’t think that the Syrian government is the only legitimate authority in Syria entitled to invite other countries in. Civil war means that legitimate authority is contested. I would be satisfied with a Kurdish invitation, but I’m not sure that’s what we have. Russia and Iran are supporting a government that has, I suppose, some legal standing in the society of states, but no moral standing. Some of the groups opposing it (not ISIL) have moral standing but possibly no legal standing. Where would you rather be?

Michael Walzer is a well-known American political theorist and author who has written 27 books and published over 300 articles on topics such as unjust wars, economic justice and Zionism. Additionally, this prominent American intellectual has been professor emeritus at the Institute for Advances Studies in the USand is the co-editor of the magazine Dissent.
