TEHRAN (Iran News) Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will travel to Tunisia and Egypt this week as part of ongoing regional consultations, says spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei.

Baqaei told IRNA on Monday that the visits fall within the framework of Iran’s continuous dialogue with regional and Islamic countries aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and exchanging views on regional issues and international developments.

During his stop in Cairo, Araghchi is scheduled to meet with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi to finalize discussions on a new framework for cooperation between Iran and the agency.

The spokesman noted that the text of the framework has been drafted over three rounds of technical talks and is now in the final stage of completion.

Baqaei explained that the framework addresses Iran’s safeguards commitments while taking into account field realities, including illegal attacks by the Israeli regime and the United States against Iran’s nuclear facilities, as well as the law passed by Parliament and considerations of the Supreme National Security Council.

The foreign minister will also hold a new round of political talks with Egyptian officials, including a meeting with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, to review bilateral and regional developments.

Iran and Tunisia Aim to Strengthen Trade Ties With Direct Flights

TEHRAN (Iran News) During a meeting with the Tunisian Ambassador to Iran, Samad Hassanzadeh highlighted the lack of sufficient information among traders about each other’s economic opportunities as a key barrier to expanding trade. He urged the Tunisian Embassy in Iran to provide updated information on Tunisia’s major economic needs and areas where Iran could fulfill these requirements. According to Hassanzadeh, such information would significantly contribute to fostering private sector collaboration between the two nations.

Hassanzadeh pointed out that the ICCIMA, with its extensive network of chambers across Iran’s 34 provinces, 20 specialized economic commissions, 49 joint chambers, and 250 economic organizations, is committed to enhancing foreign trade. He underscored that strengthening Iran’s international commercial relationships remains a priority for the chamber.

He also detailed the broad capabilities of Iranian private sector firms in various industries, including food processing, petrochemicals, steel, machinery, construction materials, engineering services, railway and tunnel construction, refinery projects, medical services, and agricultural equipment. He particularly stressed the potential for cooperation in greenhouse agriculture, health tourism, and university-level educational services.

Additionally, Hassanzadeh proposed joint production and investment ventures in heavy machinery and tractor manufacturing in Tunisia as a key area for collaboration. He reaffirmed ICCIMA’s commitment to facilitating trade delegations, promoting tourism, and developing economic cooperation to boost the bilateral trade volume.

Tunisian Ambassador to Iran, Imed Al-Rahmouni, echoed the sentiments of enhancing economic relations. He acknowledged that while political ties between Tunisia and Iran are strong, trade relations have yet to reach the same level. Strengthening commercial ties remains a top priority for the Tunisian Embassy in Iran.

The ambassador highlighted the recent visa exemption agreement between Iran and Tunisia, which could lead to increased tourism and business visits. However, he stressed that establishing a direct flight route between Tehran and Tunis is crucial for further enhancing bilateral trade and travel.

Al-Rahmouni also called for the reactivation of the Iran-Tunisia Joint Business Council, which has remained dormant for several years. He stated that efforts are underway to relaunch the council alongside the upcoming Iran-Tunisia Joint Economic Commission meeting. The primary goal is to create a more conducive environment for private sector engagement and investment.

The Tunisian envoy recognized Iran’s advanced capabilities in medical equipment and pharmaceuticals. He announced plans to bring a delegation of Tunisian businesspeople in these sectors to Iran to explore potential partnerships. The ambassador also emphasized the importance of joint investment in producing medications for cancer and cardiovascular diseases, noting that Iranian industries offer high-quality products at competitive prices.

Moreover, Al-Rahmouni noted that numerous trade agreements exist between Iran and Tunisia, but many have not been effectively implemented. He urged both governments to take necessary steps to activate these agreements and facilitate smoother trade transactions.

The ambassador also pointed out that Tunisia has free trade agreements with several African countries, presenting a significant opportunity for Iranian businesses to expand their market reach across the continent. By leveraging Tunisia’s trade networks, Iranian companies could gain a strategic advantage in entering African markets.

Both sides expressed optimism about the future of economic cooperation and committed to taking concrete steps to strengthen trade and investment between Iran and Tunisia. The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to prioritize the establishment of direct flights and the revival of the business council to accelerate commercial activities.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A policeman has been killed and several others have been wounded in an explosion outside the US Embassy in Tunis, the Capital city of Tunisia.

Interior Ministry of Tunisia said two assailants on a motorbike blew themselves up outside the US embassy in the Lac district on Friday, adding that that attack also wounded five police officers, while a civilian sustained minor injuries.

Meanwhile, state news agency TAP reported that the blast claimed the life of one policeman.

“We heard a very powerful explosion … We saw the remains of the terrorist lying on the ground after he went on the motorbike toward the police,” Amira, a shopkeeper, told Reuters.

Following the attack, roads around security installations were sealed in some parts of the capital, and some international institutions were put on lockdown or evacuated.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the explosion. But Tunisia has been hit by a number of deadly attacks by Takfiri terrorists in the past. Last summer, Daesh claimed responsibility for blasts that hit Tunis over the course of a week, including one near the French Embassy that killed a policeman.

Tunisia: Habib Jemli Tasked with Forming New Government

According To Iran News, Tunisia’s recently elected President Kais Saied has tasked agricultural engineer Habib Jemli with forming a government after the Ennahdha party nominated him for the prime minister’s job

After the announcement on Friday, Jemli said cabinet members will be chosen on “their competence and integrity, regardless of their political affiliation”, in a video posted on the presidency’s Facebook page, Al Jazeera reported.

Jemli, who described himself as an independent, served as a junior minister in the first Ennahda-led government formed in late 2011 after the fall of longtime ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali to a pro-democracy uprising.

The 60-year-old has two months to form a coalition out of a deeply fractured Parliament in which Ennahdha, as the largest party, took only a quarter of the seats in last month’s election. In case Jemli fails, Saied will nominate another prime minister.

Tunisia’s new Parliament on Wednesday elected Ennahdha’s Rached Ghannouchi as its speaker after the rival Heart of Tunisia party backed him, opening the way for a possible coalition government between them.

Any new government will need the support of at least two other parties to command even the minimum parliamentary majority of 109 seats needed to pass legislation.

Analysts say the new government will need clear political will and strong backing in Parliament to push through economic reforms started by the outgoing Prime Minister, Youssef Chahed, who is acting as caretaker during coalition talks.

Chahed’s cabinet has focused on spending cuts backed by the IMF to bring Tunisia’s hefty deficit and public debt under control while raising spending on security to woo back tourists to the country.

Economic challenges – unemployment of 15 percent nationally and 30 percent in some cities, inflation of nearly seven percent and a weak dinar – have plagued Tunisia since its 2011 revolution, which spawned democracy and sparked the “Arab Spring” that swept across the region.

Those problems, alongside deteriorating public services and a public perception of widespread government corruption, drove voters to reject the political establishment in this autumn’s presidential and parliamentary elections.

“I hope that it will be a new start. After we completed democratic transition, the focus will be on development, fighting against corruption, unemployment and high prices,” Ghannouchi said on Friday.

Bardia Saadat was the match’s high scorer with a record-high of 37 points.

Iran, the reigning champion, couldn’t find a better place than the 5th rank in the 2019 edition of the games in Tunis, Tunisia.

The team started the competition on a high note and defeated Bulgaria 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20) on August 22. Vakili’s men then conceded a surprise loss to Czech Republic 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-22) one day later. Playing with more focus, Iranian volleyballers managed to gain a 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 25-17, 25 – 13) win over Colombia on Saturday to revive the team’s confidence. In their last match of Pool B on Sunday, however, Italy proved to be too strong as they won Iran 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 24-26, 25-11). With these results, Iran got into the Round of 16.

There it defeated strong Cuba in straight sets (25-19, 26-24, 25-22) on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinal where Russia was awaiting. Russia defeated Iran 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23) in this stage on Wednesday to destroy hopes of Iran for repeating its championship. Vakili’s men then repeated group stage 3-1 win over Bulgaria on Thursday in a 5-8th playoff.

The 2019 edition of FIVB Boy’s World Championship kicked off on August 21 in Tunis, Tunisia.

With two gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, Iran is the third most decorated team in the event after Brazil and Russia. Iranians won their first title in 2007 where they defeated China in the final. Iran has taken part in 11 out of 15 editions of the games so far managing to advance to the semifinal in eight ones.

Marathon last-minute negotiations between the government and union umbrella group UGTT failed to avert Thursday’s strike by public sector workers. The stoppage is expected to affect airports, ports, hospitals and other public services.

Demonstrations are planned at the national union headquarters in the capital Tunis and around the country.

The International Monetary Fund has urged public sector salary freezes and other reforms in exchanges for loans to Tunisia’s struggling economy.

President Beji Caid Essebsi has called for calm. Thursday’s strike comes after new tensions erupted last month when a journalist set himself on fire to protest unfulfilled promises of Tunisia’s 2011 Arab Spring revolution.

Harry Kane said he hopes World Cup officiating will improve after rescuing England with two goals in a last-gasp 2-1 victory over a physical Tunisia side on Monday.

Kane got England out of jail with an injury-time winner at the Volgograd Arena to ensure Gareth Southgate’s side claimed all three points from their opening Group G game.

England had almost paid a heavy price for missing a slew of first-half chances when Tunisia’s Ferjani Sassi slotted home a softly-awarded penalty 20 minutes before half-time.

And the north Africans were still level as the game went past the 90-minute mark.

But Harry Maguire won a header from a corner and Kane was on hand at the far post to nod in the winner before being mobbed by his ecstatic teammates.

“I’m so proud of the lads,” Kane said. “They kept going, kept going to the last second. I am absolutely buzzing, everyone on the staff is. It shows good character to get the job done.”

However Kane admitted he was frustrated by several decisions from referee Wilmar Roldan, who ignored several incidents involving Tunisian defenders tangling with the England captain.

One first half collision which saw Sassi wrestle Kane to the ground in the penalty area was widely replayed across social media after the game.

“I was maybe a bit disappointed by that,” Kane said. “I guess that’s what VAR is there for, to look at them decisions. If they don’t think that was a penalty, we have to deal with that.

“For me, I struggled to get them off me. I tried to run at a few corners and couldn’t move. I guess as players there’s nothing we can do about that. We just have to hope the officials get it right more often than not.”

– Bright start –

England had started brightly in a blur of passing and movement and could have been two goals up inside the first four minutes.

First Jordan Henderson’s lofted first-time pass released Dele Alli and when the ball eventually broke to Jesse Lingard he saw his shot from six yards saved by the outstretched left boot of Mouez Hassen in the Tunisia goal.

Kane had been kept quiet in the opening salvos but he exploded into action in the 11th minute when he cut inside from the left and saw his shot from the edge of the box deflected wide for a corner.

Ashley Young delivered the set piece for John Stones to rise highest and meet with a powerful header. Hassen saved acrobatically but Kane was on hand to tap home the rebound with his right foot and open his World Cup account.

Hassen, who had injured his left shoulder making an earlier save, could not continue and left the field in tears as he was replaced in goal by Farouk Ben Mustapha.

England continued to press and were made to pay for not converting a succession of chances when they conceded their penalty.

Kyle Walker swung a lazy arm across Fakhreddine Ben Youssef who fell as if poleaxed and Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan pointed to the spot, with his decision being upheld by the VAR.

Ferjani Sassi took one step and fired home confidently past the hitherto unemployed Jordan Pickford and Tunisia who had been outplayed for the first half-hour were somehow level 10 minutes before half-time.

Still there was time for Lingard to come close again twice, first from a goalbound shot and then a dink over the keeper which agonisingly struck the post.

Alli too hit the woodwork with a header and England went into half-time wondering how they had not sealed victory already.

England still enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but could not find the same zip and penetration they had enjoyed at the start of the first half.

The ineffective Sterling gave way to Marcus Rashford with just over 20 minutes to go and the Manchester United man almost fashioned a chance straight away with a jinking run into the box.

Iran has been scheduled to meet Tunisia in a friendly match on Friday.

The match will take place at the Hedi Ennaifer stadium in Le Bardo district, west of the Tunisian capital.

“First of all, I would like to thank the Tunisian football federation for giving us a chance for the friendly match. The warm-up match with Tunisia can be useful for us due to its game similarity with the Moroccan national squad,” Queiroz said in the pre-match news conference.

“The friendly match is very important for both teams because we want to learn, that’s why we are here,” the Portuguese added.

“Iran and Tunisia are the best Asian and African teams and have common dreams in the 2018 World Cup. Both teams are going to book a place in knockout stage and it’s a good opportunity for us to prepare for the World Cup,” Queiroz stated.

Speaking about Iran’s opponents in the World Cup, Queiroz said, “We are not afraid on any team. Iran has been drawn with Morocco, Portugal and Spain and it will be a big challenge for our team but we are happy as well due to playing with the big teams.”
