EU rejects ‘Deal of the Century’

TEHRAN (Iran News) – In a statement on Tuesday, the EU High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell voiced the bloc’s rejection of the American administration’s so-called Deal of the Century for Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In the statement, the EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell noted that the so-called deal of century introduced by US President Donald Trump on 28 January departs from internationally agreed parameters, such as “the two-State solution, based on 1967 lines, with equivalent land swaps, as may be agreed between the parties, … as set out in the Council Conclusions of July 2014.”

“To build a just and lasting peace, the unresolved final status issues must be decided through direct negotiations between both parties. This includes notably the issues related to borders, the status of Jerusalem, security and the refugee question,” the statement added.

“The European Union calls on both sides to re-engage and to refrain from any unilateral actions contrary to international law that could exacerbate tensions,” the statement said.

“We are especially concerned by statements on the prospect of the annexation of the Jordan Valley and other parts of the West Bank. In line with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the EU does not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the territories occupied since 1967. Steps towards annexation, if implemented, could not pass unchallenged.”

“The European Union will continue to support all efforts aimed at reviving a political process in line with international law, which ensures equal rights and which is acceptable to both parties,” the statement added.

The US administration unveiled the so-called ‘Deal of the Century’ plan last week. The deal has been widely condemned among the Muslim countries that believe it to flagrantly violate Palestinians’ rights.

The American deal, which was negotiated with the Israeli regime but without the Palestinians, refers to Jerusalem al-Quds as the undivided capital of Israel and allows the regime to annex illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank and the Jordan Valley.

Majlis committee condemns Trump Mideast plan

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee vehemently condemned the new plan of Trump for the Middle East as declaring war against Islam.

In a statement published on Monday evening, the committee in Majlis noted that the so-called plan of Trump for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is in clear violation of relevant international resolutions and laws.

Despite Washington’s claim, the plan will not bring peace; rather, it will increase tensions in the region, added the statement.

The Islamic Republic of Iran considers resistance as the only way to confront the Zionist regime, it said, adding that the only solution for the Palestinian problem is to hold a referendum among main residents of the land, including Muslims, Christians, and Jews.

The committee went on to urge parliaments of Islamic countries to condemn the US proposal and support Palestinians’ rights.

US administration unveiled the highly controversial plan last week. The deal has been widely condemned among Muslim countries as flagrantly violating Palestinians’ rights.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mousavi described the US imposed plan as ‘treason of century’ against the inalienable rights of Palestinian people and called for the governments and freedom-seeking nations to counter the move.

He went on to say that Palestinian land and territory belongs to the Palestinian people, adding, “the Zionist regime is an occupier and the only solution to the crisis is holding a referendum among the main residents of the land.”

Velayati calls Trump’s plan shameful

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Ali Akbar Velayati has denounced US President Donald Trump’s anti-Palestine Middle East plan as “the shameful and deceptive plan of the century,” which is “doomed to failure.”

Ali Akbar Velayati, who is also secretary-general of the World Assembly of Islamic Awakening, made the remarks in a Thursday statement in response to Trump’s announcement of the plan that he has dubbed “the deal of the century.”

The statement was released prior to a presser by Velayati on the matter.

While condemning the so-called ‘deal of the century,’ the World Assembly of Islamic Awakening considers it necessary for all Palestinian factions to close their ranks as a “comprehensive strategy aimed at thwarting the ominous goals” of Trump’s plot, he added.

He referred to the Palestinian cause as “the most important” issue facing the Muslim world, saying Muslims are obliged to throw “unequivocal support” behind Palestine by “using all material, spiritual and media capacities, public diplomacy, holding rallies and enlightening public opinion.”

Defying international outcry, Trump on Tuesday announced the general provisions of the plan at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his side.

The scheme — which all Palestinian groups have unanimously rejected — largely meets Israel’s demands in the decades-old conflict, while creating a Palestinian state with limited control over its own security and borders.

It enshrines Jerusalem al-Quds as “Israel’s undivided capital” and allows the regime to annex settlements in the occupied West Bank and the Jordan Valley, among other controversial terms.

Velayati further warned of the repercussions of such a plan, including destabilizing the region and violating numerous UN resolutions on the Palestine cause.

In order to make up for the US’s failed policies meant to ensure the security of Israel, the Trump administration made an attempt to secure the objectives of the international Zionism lobby by fueling instability in the region.

“The deal of the century will lead nowhere,” but rather consolidate unity in the Muslim Ummah and muster support for the oppressed Palestinian nation from the world’s freedom- and justice-seeking people and the entire international community, Velayati said.

Democrats Slam Trump Plan

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The leading US Democrats have slammed President Donald Trump plan as a “cynical charade” that would make the Israeli-Palestinian conflict worse.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, as one f democrats, used the strongest language of any of the candidates in his criticism of Trump plan, calling it “unacceptable,” since “any acceptable peace deal must be consistent with international law and multiple UN resolutions.”

Sanders said any agreement “must end the Israeli occupation and enable Palestinian self-determination in an independent state of their own alongside a secure Israel. Trump’s so-called peace deal doesn’t come close, and will only perpetuate the conflict.”

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren said “Trump’s ‘peace plan’ is a rubber stamp for annexation and offers no chance for a real Palestinian state. Releasing a plan without negotiating with Palestinians isn’t diplomacy, it’s a sham. I will oppose unilateral annexation in any form—and reverse any policy that supports it.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden also characterized the Trump plan as “a political stunt that could spark unilateral moves to annex territory and set back peace even more.”

Democratic presidential candidate, Pete Buttigieg also lashed Trump for his handling of foreign affairs and censured the plan as “undermining a workable solution to the conflict.”

The former Indiana mayor said, “this president’s Mideast ‘Deal of the Century,’ like so much else he’s done in foreign policy, makes complex situations worse.”

“Peace requires both parties at the table. Not a political green light to the leader of one for unilateral annexation,” Buttigieg added.

Immediately after the Trump plan’s release on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to bring his plan to annex the Jordan Valley and all settlements in the West Bank, with US backing, to a vote during next week’s cabinet meeting.

Like the other democratic candidates, former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg criticized the fact that Trump’s so-called peace plan was developed without any Palestinian “buy-in” and warned that “it is critical that neither side take any unilateral steps that could trigger instability and violence.”

The Democratic candidates also said Trump’s plan is “one-sided” and has opened the door to unilateral Israeli annexation of the West Bank. “Such a development would disregard international law, engender stiff opposition from US allies,” the senators said. “It will also place allies like Jordan in an untenable position.”

They warned that “the timing of Trump plan to coincide with Netanyahu’s indictment on bribery charges raises disturbing questions about an attempt by the Trump administration to interfere in the Israeli general elections on March 2.

Netanyahu was formally indicted in three separate corruption cases on Tuesday, hours before the presentation of “the peace plan” at the White House.
