In an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday night, Fauci was asked if he was surprised that Trump wound up getting infected.

“Absolutely not. I was worried that he was going to get sick when I saw him in a completely precarious situation of crowded, no separation between people, and almost nobody wearing a mask,” Fauci said. “When I saw that on TV, I said, Oh, my goodness. Nothing good can come outta that, that’s gotta be a problem.’ And then sure enough, it turned out to be a superspreader event.”

Fauci was referring to the Rose Garden news conference in late September at which Trump announced that he was nominating Amy Coney Barrett to serve as a Supreme Court justice. Afterward, a number of people who participated in the event, including Trump, tested positive for COVID-19.

Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said during the interview that Trump “sometimes equates wearing a mask with weakness,” which the doctor said doesn’t make sense. He said he believes Trump’s efforts to push back against his recommendations regarding the coronavirus pandemic has less to do with the president being “anti-science” and more with him making a statement.

“I think deep down, he believes in science. If he didn’t, he would not have entrusted his health to the very competent physicians at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center,” Fauci said about Trump’s recent visit to the hospital to receive treatment for COVID, NBC News reported.

In the wide-ranging interview, Fauci discussed a Trump campaign ad that he says took his words from earlier this year being taken out of context. He told CBS that he “got really ticked off” about that.

He also said that the White House has blocked him from going on a number of shows that have requested interviews with him.

“I think there has been a restriction,” Fauci said. “But it isn’t consistent.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s rial has strengthened against the US dollar in the unofficial market mainly on speculations that US President Donald Trump’s sickness could hurt his re-election chances in the next month’s elections.

A Sunday report by semi-official Tasnim news agency said currency traders in downtown Tehran were of the idea that Trump’s infection with the coronavirus and his poor performance in a first presidential debate held earlier this week had contributed to the rial’s growth.

US dollar dipped to 286,000 against the rial later in the day, down nearly five percent compared to Friday when the Iranian currency hit a new record low.

Tasnim said measures taken in recent days by the Central Bank of Iran (CBI), including removing a cap on trade in a secondary exchange market, had also played a role in the market.

Traders said the rial will continue to firm against other currencies over the next few days although some said Trump’s discharge from hospital, expected on Monday, could reverse the trend.

However, experts believe the dollar could lose almost a third of its value against the rial immediately after a potential loss for Trump in the November 3 election.

An official price of 42,000 for the rial against the dollar is still used by the government to fund imports of staples and medicines. The price has not changed since early 2018 when the national currency began its fall on news of the United States would leave a nuclear deal with Iran and impose extensive sanctions on the country.

Gold also fell sharply on Sunday with benchmark gold coin known as Bahar Azadi dropping to 135 million rials, down 10 percent compared to Saturday.

Press TV contributed to this story.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – As of Trump’s announcement about being infected by the COVID-19, the US President and the White House officials have given conflicting accounts of his conditions.

US president says he is ‘feeling better’ in hospital but the chief of staff says Trump’s symptoms ‘very concerning’, Al-Jazeera reported on Sunday.

US President Donald Trump, who is being treated for COVID-19 in a military hospital outside Washington, said in a video on Saturday that he was feeling ill when he arrived at the facility but now was “starting to feel good”.

The address came hours after conflicting assessments of his health from administration officials left it unclear how ill the president had become since he tested positive for coronavirus. A White House team of doctors said on Saturday morning that Trump’s conditions were improving and that he was already talking about returning to the White House.

But within minutes, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows gave reporters a less rosy assessment, telling reporters, “The president’s vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care. We’re still not on a clear path to a full recovery.”

On Saturday night, Trump’s main doctor Navy Commander Dr. Sean Conley reported that Trump had been up and around at his medical suite during the day and had been conducting business. He said that the medical team treating the president is “cautiously optimistic,” but also notes that the president is “not yet out of the woods.”

This is while US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has shortened the upcoming Asia trip amid Trump’s hospitalization.

Several people in Trump’s campaign have tested positive in recent days.

Trump’s diagnosis has forced him to withdraw at least temporarily from the campaign, raising questions about its potential effects on the November 3 election.

As reported, the Democratic nominee Joe Biden leads US President Donald Trump by sizable margins among voters in Pennsylvania and Florida following Tuesday night’s combative presidential debate. According to a New York Times-Siena College poll published Saturday, the survey found that Biden leads Trump in Pennsylvania by 7 percentage points, garnering 49 percent support among respondents in the state, compared to Trump’s 42 percent, the Hill reported.
