TEHRAN (Iran News) – Tensions between Anthony Fauci and US President Donald Trump are increasing after the country’s top infectious disease expert asked the Trump campaign to take down a new ad that features comments of his that he says were taken out of context.

The ad, released last week shortly after the president was discharged from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, touts the president’s response to the virus and includes an edited clip of Fauci that makes it seem as though he was praising Trump’s response to the pandemic.

In the 30-second spot, Fauci is heard saying, “I can’t imagine that anybody could be doing more.”

Fauci this week said his remarks, taken from a March interview, were in reference to fellow members of the White House coronavirus task force and other public health officials.

“In my nearly five decades of public service, I have never publicly endorsed any political candidate. The comments attributed to me without my permission in the GOP campaign ad were taken out of context from a broad statement I made months ago about the efforts of federal public health officials,” Fauci said in a statement Sunday.

During an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper the following day, Fauci said he thinks the campaign should take down the ad.

“I think it’s really unfortunate and really disappointing that they did that,” Fauci said.

“It is so clear that I am not a political person, and I have never either directly or indirectly endorsed a political candidate, and to take a completely out-of-context statement and put it in … A political campaign ad, I thought, was really very disappointing,” Fauci said, The Hill reported.

The rebuke from Fauci comes as the president has repeatedly meddled with decisionmaking at the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), often without much if any pushback from those agencies.

Trump has also lashed out at those agency heads, undermining their public messaging.

Fauci’s comments, however, mark the second time in as many weeks that he has publicly distanced himself from Trump.

During the first presidential debate, on Sept. 29, Trump suggested that his health officials have changed their minds about the benefits of masks during the pandemic, noting that the CDC has not always recommended the use of face coverings.

“Dr. Fauci said the opposite. He very strongly said masks aren’t good, and then he changed his mind. He said masks are good,” Trump said.

Fauci said later that week that his stance on the benefits of face masks was “taken out of context” and that the initial recommendation against widespread use of masks was due to a shortage for health providers.

He said scientists quickly changed their recommendations after realizing the extent to which asymptomatic spread was contributing to COVID-19 infections.

The Trump campaign’s use of Fauci’s remarks underscores how, more than six months into the pandemic, he is still viewed as a trusted source of information on the pandemic, in contrast to the president, who has faced harsh criticism throughout.

Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease expert at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security, said he can understand why the Trump campaign would want to imply an endorsement from Fauci.

“Dr. Fauci is a valuable resource and a world-renowned expert, so people will try to have his reputation kind of shower on to them, even when it’s undeserved,” Adalja said.

Yet given Trump’s propensity to lash out and contradict even his own experts, Adalja said it was “baffling and paradoxical” that Trump would want that message in his ads.

The latest dispute between Fauci and Trump also underscores what’s been a complicated relationship throughout the pandemic.

As Trump spent much of the spring and summer downplaying the extent of the pandemic, Fauci sounded the alarm, at times directly contradicting the president.

In July, Trump publicly mused about Fauci’s high favorability ratings when his were so low.

Fauci has also come under attack from some of Trump’s aides and surrogates, with the White House at one point providing a memo to reporters detailing all the “wrong” statements Fauci had made about the pandemic.

Mark Rosenberg, an epidemiologist who ran the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control from 1994 to 1999, said he thinks Fauci has deftly walked a fine line between speaking up for science without openly criticizing Trump.

“I think he was critical of the people who put the ad together. I don’t think he personalized it … and said this was President Trump’s fault. I think he has found a way to stand up without incurring the wrath of Donald Trump,” Rosenberg said.

Rosenberg added that he isn’t worried people might lose confidence in Fauci because of the ad since its clear Fauci is being used.

But with Trump trailing Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in national and key battleground state polls, in large part because of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, Rosenberg said it’s likely Trump’s relationship with Fauci could deteriorate if those poll numbers decline further.

“The relationship will get worse, but I don’t think Trump will fire Fauci,” Rosenberg said, arguing a drastic action like that would just serve to highlight more of Trump’s failures.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US President Donald Trump will try to put his bout with COVID-19 behind him when he returns to the campaign trail on Monday, beginning a three-week sprint to the Nov 3 election with a rally in the vital battleground state of Florida.

The event at an airport in Sanford, Florida, will be Trump’s first campaign rally since he disclosed on Oct 2 that he tested positive for COVID-19.

Trump, who spent three days in the hospital for treatment, said on Sunday he was fully recovered and no longer infectious, but did not say directly whether he had tested negative for the virus, Reuters reported.

The Republican president is seeking to change the dynamics of a race that opinion polls show he is losing to Democratic rival Joe Biden just 21 days before Election Day.

For months, Trump had worked furiously to shift public attention away from the virus and his handling of the pandemic, which has infected nearly 7.7 million people in the United States, killed more than 214,000 and put millions out of work.

But his own illness has put the spotlight squarely on his coronavirus response during the closing stretch of the race.

Biden, in a sign of fresh optimism as he leads Trump in national and many key state polls, heads on Monday to Ohio, a state Trump won by 8 percentage points in 2016.

It is Biden’s second campaign trip in as many weeks to Ohio, which was once thought out of reach but where polls now show a tight race.

Trump’s rally in Florida, and planned rallies in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Iowa on Wednesday and North Carolina on Thursday, will be watched closely to see whether the president has changed his approach to campaigning since contracting the virus.

He has been criticized for failing to encourage supporters at campaign events, and even White House staff, to wear protective masks and abide by social-distancing guidelines. At least 11 close Trump aides have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Trump, speaking from a White House balcony on Saturday, urged hundreds of largely Black and Latino supporters to help get out the vote.

Standing alone, Trump was not wearing a mask as he spoke. Most in the crowd were wearing masks but not following social-distancing guidelines.

Asked on Saturday if Trump should be resuming rallies, Biden said it was important that he makes it clear to all those in attendance the importance of staying socially distanced and wearing masks.

“That’s the only responsible thing to do,” Biden told reporters.

Trump told Fox News in an interview on Sunday that he felt good and pointed to his physician’s memo from Saturday saying he had taken a test showing he was no longer infectious.

“I passed the highest test, the highest standards, and I’m in great shape,” Trump told “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Trump also said, without producing evidence, that he was now immune, an assertion that drew a flag from Twitter for violating the social media platform’s rules about misleading information related to COVID-19.

The scientific research has been inconclusive on how long people who have recovered from COVID-19 have antibodies and are protected from a second infection.

Most recent polls in Florida, where a Trump loss would dramatically narrow his path to re-election, show Biden with a small lead. Trump won Florida over Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016 by just 1.2 percentage points, which helped propel him to the White House.

On his visit to Ohio, Biden will deliver a speech in Toledo meant to undermine what polls show is Trump’s last greatest strength, the view among some voters that the former real estate entrepreneur is better on handling the economy.

Biden also will attend a get-out-the-vote event in Cincinnati, his campaign said.

Trump has pulled back his advertising in Ohio in recent days, while Biden has increased his, another sign of the opportunity the former vice president and his fellow Democrats see to make more states competitive than they initially imagined.

President Trump’s first campaign rally since March is slated for Saturday evening in Tulsa, Okla., and tensions are rising between protest crowds and supporters of the president ahead of the event, The Hill reported.

Current estimates suggest 100,000 or more people may enter downtown Tulsa on Saturday, with expectations that some of them will be anti-Trump protesters, according to the Tulsa World.

A fence has been put up around the BOK Center, where Trump’s rally is set to take place Saturday evening.

Following a discussion with Trump, Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum (R) agreed to toss a proposed curfew that was initiated Thursday night.

State health officials reported on Saturday 225 new cases of COVID-19, marking a daily high in increases for Tulsa County.

Health department data reveals Tulsa County’s seven-day rolling average for COVID-19 cases has increased from 24.9 cases on June 7 to 51.4 as of Friday.

On Saturday, a truck displaying digital real-time imagery of the Trump Death Clock rolled into downtown Tulsa. The clock that allegedly estimates the number of Americans who have died needlessly from COVID-19, The Guardian reported.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Donald Trump campaign has described Senator Bernie Sanders’ win in the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, as domination by “big government socialist”.

The independent senator from Vermont claimed a decisive victory in the Democratic presidential caucuses with former vice president Joe Biden finishing second.

The win in Nevada would solidify Sanders’ frontrunner status in the competition to choose the Democratic nominee who faces Trump in November’s election.

The Republican president’s campaign manager Brad Parscale said in a statement, “Media reports of unstaffed caucus sites in Nevada just prove that the national Democrat Party is in chaos and incompetent.”

His message appeared to refer to a few logistical stumbles at the beginning of the caucuses as some reports showed volunteers struggling to connect to a telephone number used to record results.

Nevada scrapped plans to use the caucus process similar to the one used in Iowa Feb. 3, which dissolved into chaos when a glitchy new app developed to help count the vote failed to function.

Parscale went on to say that “there is no denying that Big Government Socialism dominated again as Bernie Sanders remained the leader of the leftist pack. We are another day closer to Election Day and another day closer to re-electing President Trump.”

Sanders, who dominated among young and middle-aged people as well as Latinos in Nevada and won several downtown Las Vegas caucus sites, is now a small step closer to becoming the nominee, although he will remain a long way off the 1,990 delegates needed.

“We won the popular vote in Iowa, we won the New Hampshire primary, and according to three networks and the AP, we have now won the Nevada caucus,” the 78-year-old told cheering supporters in San Antonio, Texas.

“We have put together a multi-generational, multiracial coalition that is going to not only win in Nevada, but it’s also going to sweep the country.”

Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg both released memos this week predicting that Sanders will probably have a delegate lead coming out of Super Tuesday if the dynamics of the race remain unchanged.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US President Donald Trump has come under fire for granting clemency to Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat, convicted in 2011 by a federal jury in Chicago on 17 counts.

The ex-Illinois governor was convicted of trying to sell the US Senate seat vacated when President Barack Obama was elected in 2008 among others.

Blagojevich, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison and has been serving his prison time at a Colorado federal prison since 2012, was released from the federal prison in Englewood, the Bureau of Prisons said in a statement on Tuesday.

Trump has for long said he thinks Blagojevich had served enough time and been treated unfairly.

“He served eight years in jail, that’s a long time, and I watched his wife on television, I don’t know him very well, I met him a couple of times, he was on for a short time on ‘The Apprentice’ years ago, seemed like a very nice person, don’t know him, but he served eight years in jail, there’s a long time to go,” he said Tuesday.

Trump also gave pardons to Michael Milken, once considered Wall Street’s “junk bond king,” as well as six others, while commuting the sentences of another three people.

Speaking of Milken, who was indicted in 1989 in an insider trading probe and then pleaded guilty to securities violations, Trump said, “We have Mike Milken who’s gone around and done an incredible job for the world with all of his research on cancer.”

After paying $1.1 billion and serving about two years in prison, he has headed the non-profit Milken Institute that works on a wide span of studies, including curing cancer, public health, aging, California and financial markets.

The people Trump has pardoned were convicted on charges including defrauding the federal government and theft among others.

Trump’s move to pardon these people was criticized by both Democrats and Republicans.

“Blagojevich is the face of public corruption in Illinois, and not once has he shown any remorse for his clear and documented record of egregious crimes that undermined the trust placed in him by voters,” five Republican congressmen from the state said in a joint statement.

Referring to Blagojevich and Milken, Democratic US Representative Bill Pascrell said, “The pardoning of these disgraced figures should be treated as another national scandal by a lawless executive.”

Trump also pardoned former New York Police Department Commissioner Bernard Kerik, who received a prison sentence of four years in 2010 for tax fraud and for making false statements.

In addition, the president pardoned Eddie DeBartolo Jr., the former owner of the San Francisco 49ers football team, who pleaded guilty in 1998 to not reporting a felony related to payment demanded a riverboat casino license in a bribery scheme.

In total, Trump granted clemency to 11 convicted criminals, including three women on Tuesday.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign dunked on Iowa Democratic caucuses that have been marred by reporting inconsistencies.

Brad Parscale, Trump’s campaign manager, worked to sow further uncertainty while touting the president’s victory in the GOP’s caucuses, a result that had been virtually guaranteed heading into Monday, The Hill reported.

“Democrats are stewing in a caucus mess of their own creation with the sloppiest train wreck in history. It would be natural for people to doubt the fairness of the process. And these are the people who want to run our entire health care system?” said Parscale.

“Tonight President Trump posted a record performance in the well-run GOP Iowa caucuses with a record turnout for an incumbent,” he added.

The statement comes as the Iowa Democratic Party scrambled to tally caucus results after admitting there were “inconsistencies” in the way the outcomes are reported.

“We found inconsistencies in the reporting of three sets of results,” said State Party Spokeswoman Mandy McClure, adding, “In addition to the tech systems being used to tabulate results, we are also using photos of results and a paper trail to validate that all results match and ensure that we have confidence and accuracy in the numbers we report.”

The confusion coincides with two developments that are new in this year’s Iowa caucuses.

The Iowa Democratic Party is releasing three sets of data this year: a tally to reveal how many supporters showed up at each caucus site for each candidate, a second tally accounting for voters who threw their support behind another candidate if their chosen contender failed to reach the 15 percent threshold to garner delegates and a third tally that will assign “state delegate equivalents”.

The state party is also using a new app for the precincts to report their results, and there were some reports that users had issues with the new technology.

The Iowa Democratic Party worked to assure voters that no foul play was involved in the confusion.

“This is simply a reporting issue,” McClure said, adding, “The app did not go down and this is not a hack or an intrusion. The underlying data and paper trail is sound and will simply take time to further report the results.”

Jeff Kaufmann, the Chairman of the Iowa Republican Party, which did not report any issues in the GOP caucuses, said the Iowa Democratic Party should take its time to ensure the ballots are correctly counted.

“I stand with IDP in ensuring #IACaucus results are correct rather than quick. Accuracy doesn’t run on deadlines,” he tweeted.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US President Donald Trump during his campaign speech has used misleading data to claim he’s created an economic “boom,” while Democratic candidates seeking to replace him twisted the facts in their latest presidential debate.

Trump distorted his record on the economy and fell back on an old false claim about making Mexico pay for his border wall that served as a counterpoint to Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate, The Associated Press said in an analysis on Wednesday.

During giving his speech at a reelection campaign on Tuesday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Trump claimed he’s created a “blue-collar boom” for low-income workers in the US.

“More than 300,000 people under Obama, 300,000 people, left the workforce. Under just three years of my administration, 3.5 million people have joined the workforce,” Trump said at the rally.

The AP said Trump is wrong about former President Barack Obama’s economic record. More than 5 million people joined the US labor force during Obama’s presidency, according to Labor Department figures.

Trump also claimed that the updated trade between the US, Canada and Mexico will pay for a wall along the US-Mexico border because of economic benefits he predicts will come from the agreement.

The USMCA deal, which will replace NAFTA, has been signed by the three nations but not yet ratified. The agreement preserves the existing liberalized environment of low or no tariffs, with certain improvements for each country.

However, nothing in the trade agreement would cover or refund the wall construction cost or require a payment from Mexico, the report said.

Instead, Trump is assuming a wide variety of economic benefits that can’t be quantified or counted on. For example, he has said the deal will dissuade some US companies from moving operations to Mexico and he credits that possibility as a payment by Mexico.

Turning to the US economy during the rally, Trump said: “The lowest-paid earners are reaping the biggest, fastest and largest gains. Earnings for the bottom 10% are rising faster than earnings for the top 10%, proportionally.”

The AP said Trump’s claim that the biggest pay hikes are going to the poor is also misleading. The top 10% of US earners saw the biggest raises of any income bracket over the past year, according to the US Labor Department.

When the Labor Department looked at the gains by quartile, weekly earnings grew at faster rates at the top levels than the bottom 25%.

“We’ve created 7 million jobs since the election including more than 1 million manufacturing and construction jobs. Nobody thought that was possible,” Trump said.

But the AP said those figures are less impressive than what Trump claims. Government figures show that the job gains under Trump over the past three years were lower than during the final three years of Obama’s presidency.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US social media company Facebook says it has taken down a news network that used hundreds of fake accounts to publish stories about a variety of topics, including articles promoting President Donald Trump and criticizing the Chinese government.

Facebook said Friday it removed more than 900 accounts, groups, and pages on its own platform and Instagram for using fake accounts to mislead users, including with false profile photos generated by artificial intelligence.

The social media company traced the accounts to The BL (Beauty of Life), a US-based media company that also operates out of Vietnam that Facebook linked to Epoch Media Group, owner of The Epoch Times.

The Epoch Times is known for its support of Trump and favorable coverage of far-right politicians in Europe.

The organization was founded in 2000 by John Tang and a group of Chinese Americans associated with the Falun Gong spiritual movement.

Facebook said the accounts pushed anti-impeachment and pro-Trump messages while posing as everyday Americans.

The BL Facebook accounts were shut down for “coordinated inauthentic behavior on behalf of a government or foreign actor,” Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, said a statement.

The Epoch Times is among the first to make widespread use of artificially generated profile pictures and spent more than $9 million on advertising, according to researchers from Facebook, Graphika and the Digitial Forensics Research Lab.

Facebook said The BL’s now-removed Facebook page “repeatedly violated a number of our policies, including our policies against coordinated inauthentic behavior, spam, and misrepresentation.”

Facebook said some of the accounts in its website, including those with fictitious administrators, were explicitly dedicated to supporting Trump, while others combined politics with other topics.

One account identified by the outside researchers was called “Stand with President Trump 2020.”

“Alongside pro-Trump material, these assets posted large quantities of material attacking his critics and rivals, often presenting users with a partisan statement and urging them to respond if they agreed,” the researchers wrote in a report on the operation.

The takedown followed investigative stories by NBC on the Epoch Times’ heavy use of Facebook.
