TEHRAN (Iran News) – Former first lady Michelle Obama on Monday launched a direct attack on the character of President Trump and his record in the White House during a virtual address to the Democratic National Convention that opened and closed with a forceful call to vote.

“Let me be as honest and clear as I possibly can. Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country,” Obama said, wearing a gold necklace with the word “vote” spelled out. “He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet at this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is.”

Obama’s speech, capping off the first night of the virtual Democratic National Convention, was a remarkable rebuke from a former first lady of a sitting US president.

“Sadly, this is the America that is on display for the next generation,” Obama said. “A nation that’s underperforming not simply on matters of policy but on matters of character. And that’s not just disappointing; it’s downright infuriating because I know the goodness and the grace that is out there in households and neighborhoods all across this nation.”

“And I know that regardless of our race, age, religion, or politics, when we close out the noise and the fear and truly open our hearts, we know that what’s going on in this country is just not right. This is not who we want to be,” she continued.

The former first lady also referenced her 2016 Democratic National Convention speech four years ago, in which she coined her famous catchphrase in response to Trump: “When they go low, we go high.”

“Over the past four years, a lot of people have asked me, ‘When others are going so low, does going high still really work?’ My answer: going high is the only thing that works, because when we go low, when we use those same tactics of degrading and dehumanizing others, we just become part of the ugly noise that’s drowning out everything else. We degrade ourselves. We degrade the very causes for which we fight,” she said, The Hill reported.

Obama acknowledged that her address would not be welcome by all sections of US society, alluding to the role racism still plays in the country.

“I understand that my message won’t be heard by some people. We live in a nation that is deeply divided, and I am a Black woman speaking at the Democratic Convention,” Obama said.” But enough of you know me by now. You know that I tell you exactly what I’m feeling. You know I hate politics. But you also know that I care about this nation. You know how much I care about all of our children.”

Obama was the most high-profile speaker who addressed the first night of the convention, which also saw a number of other prominent politicians. The convention sought to promote its theme of unity by hosting speakers ranging from progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former Republican Gov. John Kasich (Ohio).

The former first lady wrapped the speech with a plea for those watching to vote, invoking the words of the late civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga).

“It is up to us to add our voices and our votes to the course of history, echoing heroes like John Lewis who said, ‘When you see something that is not right, you must say something. You must do something,'” Obama said quoting Lewis. “That is the truest form of empathy: not just feeling, but doing; not just for ourselves or our kids, but for everyone, for all our kids.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that policies by the Trump administration have led to the creation of a gap between the US and Europe.

He made the remarks in a comprehensive interview with a live IRIB program aired on Monday night. Zarif discussed various issues in the interview; from the JCPOA and US unilateralism to ties with China, the situation in Lebanon, and the Emirati-Israeli agreement.

Zarif likened the US behavior to a ‘bully in school’ who ‘beats smaller kids’, adding that if no one stops this bully, he/she will generalize this behavior and beats everyone. Likewise, the minister continued, the US started with smaller countries such as Iraq, and then it causes problems for Iran and in the next step, it goes for its own allies such as Germany.

America is now threatening German companies with sanctions on the Nord Stream project, he added. “If the world does not stand against this excessive demand, America will expand its bullying behavior across the world.”

European countries are ‘gradually’ acknowledge the fact as EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell once said that the US should stop threatening the EU, added Zarif.

On Emirati-Israeli deal

Elsewhere, Zarif pointed to the controversial agreement between the Israeli regime and the United Arab Emirates that has apparently been brokered by the US and condemned by Palestinian groups and resistance countries.

“The Zionist regime that is the biggest security threat tells regional countries that Iran is the biggest threat and I am your survivor,” Zarif said, adding that they have ‘swindled’ the regional countries with this approach.

These countries “betray the Palestinian cause to use the Israeli security,” said the diplomat, framing, “Have the Israeli regime managed to defend itself against Hamas and Hezbollah to be able to defend you?”

“As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States,” Trump told reporters on Friday on Air Force One, adding he will “sign the document tomorrow.”

ByteDance did not immediately respond to CGTN’s request for comment. TikTok belongs to the Chinese group ByteDance and has nearly one billion users worldwide.

As TikTok’s second-largest user base, the US has seen an increase of 45 million new users in 2020 alone amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The app has been downloaded more than 165 million times on app stores, according to Sensor Tower data.

Just a few hours ago, reports said Microsoft was planning to acquire TikTok’s US operations.

Earlier, in response to Trump’s comments over a potential ban of TikTok, Chinese Foreign Ministry said certain politicians in the US should give up their prejudice against Chinese companies. China also slammed the United States as “the world’s real hacker empire.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Trump administration moved Friday to ease controls on exports of armed drones, saying that allies need US technology and that other countries outside of a non-proliferation pact were taking over the market.

The White House announced that US President Donald Trump had approved a move to diverge partly from the 1987 Missile Technology Control Regime, in which 35 countries agreed to restrict the exports of armed drones delivery systems.

The MTCR was aimed at controlling the spread of missiles that could deliver large payloads like nuclear weapons.

But it also covered armed drones, at the time, not a major component of armed conflict as they are now.

The change ordered by Trump will reclassify armed drones from a technology whose export is severely restricted to a category that can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The drones in the category must have a maximum airspeed of fewer than 800 kilometers per hour, which will allow sales of the Reaper and Predator drones used by the US military, as well as others made by US defense manufacturers.

“The MTCR’s standards are more than three decades old,” the White House said in a statement, AFP reported.

“Not only do these outdated standards give an unfair advantage to countries outside of the MTCR and hurt United States industry, but they also hinder our deterrence capability abroad by handicapping our partners and allies with subpar technology.”

The White House statement said two years of talks had failed to reform the MTCR.

The move has worried arms control advocates who say the US sale of advanced drones to more countries could fuel the global arms race.

“The Trump administration has once again weakened international export controls on the export of lethal drones,” said Senator Bob Menendez in a statement.

“This reckless decision makes it more likely that we will export some of our most deadly weaponry to human rights abuses across the world,” he said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) dubbed the coronavirus the “Trump virus” on Tuesday evening, ratcheting up her rhetoric over Trump’s handling of the pandemic.

“Well, I think with the president’s comments today, he recognized the mistakes he has made by now embracing mask-wearing and the recognition this is not a hoax. It is a pandemic that has gotten worse before it will get better because of his inaction,” Pelosi said on CNN’s “The Situation Room.”

“In fact, clearly, it is the Trump virus,” Pelosi added, reiterating the phrase later in the interview as well.

The Democratic leader was responding to the president’s briefing at the White House earlier Tuesday in which he praised the use of face masks and urged Americans to wash their hands and practice physical distancing to stem the spread of the disease.

During the briefing — the president’s first coronavirus-focused White House briefing in nearly three months — Trump also warned that the outbreak in the US will “get worse before it gets better” amid surges in parts of the country.

“If he had said months ago, let’s wear masks, let’s not — let’s socially distance instead of having rallies and whatever they were, then more people would have followed his lead,” Pelosi argued on CNN. “He’s the president of the United States.”

Pressed by CNN host Wolf Blitzer on whether she was asserting that thousands of Americans had died because of the president’s response, Pelosi responded, “Yes, that’s what I am saying. I think it’s clearly evident.”

The comments mark one of the strongest rebukes yet of Trump’s handling of the pandemic, which Democrats maintain could have been more aggressively dealt with by the White House.

The criticism, which centers around Trump’s early reluctance to wear a mask and barbs from some White House aides directed at health officials such as Anthony Fauci, has been amplified amid a spike in coronavirus cases across the country, particularly in the South and West.

“We’re approaching 4 million. We’re approaching 4 million people infected, people affected by this, infected by it, and a large number, like 140,000, who have passed away. If it’s important to wear a mask now. It would have been important to wear it in March instead of telling us that by April we would all be going to church together. I wish that were the case, but he had no scientific basis for that,” Pelosi said, The Hill reported.

“If they don’t return to science and governance — and that’s a way that we can overcome this. We have hope and prayers for a vaccine. God willing that will be soon. But it is still months away, and people will die. So let’s hope that the president comes closer to embracing the reality of this pandemic, this Trump virus.”

In apparent recognition of the burgeoning health crisis, Trump has expressed more openness to masks, posting a picture on Twitter of him wearing one and urging Americans to more strictly adhere to health guidance from federal officials.

“It will probably, unfortunately, get worse before it gets better,” Trump said Tuesday.

“We’re asking everybody that when you are not able to socially distance, wear a mask,” he added. “Whether you like the mask or not, they have an impact. They’ll have an effect, and we need everything we can get.”

Just two weeks ago, Simon & Schuster celebrated the success of another Trump tell-all book, that one by former National Security Adviser John Bolton. The book, “The Room Where It Happened,” sold more than 780,000 copies in its first week of sales.

It is rare for books to sell hundreds of thousands of copies in a single week of sales – and most books will never sell that many.

“Too Much and Never Enough” will join other books about Trump that became sensational best-sellers.

Speaking to CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Friday on “Cuomo Prime Time, Mary Trump delivered scathing criticism of her uncle’s ability to govern during a crisis throughout the coronavirus pandemic warning he is “going to get worse”.

The country has more deaths from coronavirus than any other country with at least 139,000.

When asked if the president was known among family members as someone who didn’t tell the truth, Mary asserted that he “does on some levels know what he’s doing” and pointed to issues such as not wearing a mask. She said her uncle is not anti-science but will ignore facts in order to spin his preferred narrative.

Trump told Fox News on Friday he did not believe in implementing a national mask mandate.

The US recorded a total of at least 70,674 new COVID-19 infections on Friday after climbing by a record 77,499 a day earlier, the largest increase posted by any country since the pandemic started, according to a Reuters tally.

Mary Trump, who is a psychologist, also told CNN’s program that her uncle was a “psychologically deeply damaged man, based on his upbringing and the situation with his parents”.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Mary Trump, the niece of US President Donald Trump, called for him to step down Tuesday, the release date of her tell-all book “Too Much And Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.”

Asked in an interview with ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos, set to air Wednesday, what she would tell the president if she was in front of him in the Oval Office, Mary Trump responded, “Resign.”

Mary Trump, a clinical psychologist, said that her uncle has been “perverted” by deep issues in their family, making him “utterly incapable of leading this country, and it’s dangerous to allow him to do so.”

“I saw firsthand what focusing on the wrong things, elevating the wrong people can do — the collateral damage that can be created by allowing somebody to live their lives without accountability,” she said. “And it is striking to see that continuing now on a much grander scale.”

Mary Trump said that Fred Trump, her grandfather and President Trump’s father, was a “sociopath” whose years of poor treatment contributed to the president’s temperament. When her grandfather died, she and her siblings entered years-long litigation with the rest of the Trump family over their portion of his will, The Hill reported.

“He was incredibly driven in a way that turned other people, including his children (and) wife, into pawns to be used to his own ends,” she said. “It’s impossible to know who Donald might have been under different circumstances and with different parents. But clearly he learned the lesson.”

“Too Much And Never Enough” offers a damning portrait of Donald Trump, painting him as cruel, incompetent and narcissistic.

“If he is afforded a second term, it would be the end of American democracy,” Mary Trump writes.

The Trump family had fought to block the book’s publication, saying Mary Trump was violating a nondisclosure agreement she had signed, but the courts sided with her, and the memoir’s release was ultimately bumped up by two weeks.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – American approval of President Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic has dropped to the lowest level on record, the latest Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll shows, as new COVID-19 cases surged and Trump was widely criticized for suggesting he wanted to slow down testing.

The June 22-23 poll also found that a majority of Americans want Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton, to testify to Congress under oath, after he accused Trump in a new book of misdeeds, including seeking Chinese President Xi Jinping’s help to win re-election.

The poll shows that 37% of Americans approved of the way Trump has responded to the pandemic, the lowest on record since Reuters/Ipsos started asking the question at the beginning of March. Fifty-eight percent said they disapproved.

With a little over four months to go before the Nov. 3 general election, Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate, leads Trump by 10 percentage points among registered voters, according to the latest poll, down slightly from a 13-point lead in a similar poll last week.

Trump has been slow to publicly acknowledge the severity of the coronavirus outbreak, which has killed more than 120,000 Americans so far, and he has pushed states to reopen before experts said it was safe to do so.

In his first post-pandemic rally, held in Oklahoma on Saturday, the president told thousands of supporters that testing was a “double-edged sword” and that he asked health officials to slow down testing in response to the public’s concern for the growing number of cases.

Administration officials said Tuesday that Trump did not, in fact, ask them to slow down testing, which is one way to track and eventually control the spread of the disease.

Cases have jumped by 25% nationally, according to the latest seven-day tally, led by spikes in a number of states such as Texas, Arizona, and Florida that have been more lenient about social distancing.

Trump has steadily bled support among a broad swath of voters since March. Americans are increasingly critical of his response to the pandemic and a wave of protests in the aftermath of the May 25 police killing of George Floyd, a Black man in Minneapolis.

Members of Trump’s Republican Party also appeared to be more pessimistic than at any other time during his presidency. Just 43% said they thought the country was headed in the “right direction,” the lowest level recorded by the Reuters/Ipsos poll since Trump entered office in January 2017.

Trump has faced an unusual outpouring of criticism from members of the military establishment such as James Mattis, his first defense secretary, over his militarized response to the protests. Most recently, Bolton said Trump was unfit to be president and accused him in his new book of routinely obstructing justice.

Fifty-eight percent of Americans – 81% of Democrats and 37% of Republicans – said they would like to see Bolton testify under oath about his experiences in the Trump administration.

Bolton, who refused to do so last year as part of the House of Representatives’ impeachment proceedings against Trump, appeared to confirm one of the investigation’s central allegations in his book, saying that Trump wanted Ukraine to investigate Biden and his son, Hunter, as a condition to receiving US security aid.

However, Americans appear to be less interested in another protracted impeachment investigation, so close to the election. Forty-one percent said they wanted Congress to open another inquiry into Trump, while 39% said they were opposed, and 20% said they were “not sure.”

The poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the United States. It gathered responses from 1,115 adults, including 503 Democrats and 408 Republicans. It has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of 3 percentage points.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Trump administration has made an aggressive last-ditch attempt to block the release of John Bolton’s bombshell book, in which the former national security adviser writes that the US president offered favors to dictators and asked China to help him with his 2020 re-election.

On Wednesday night, the justice department sought an emergency order from a judge to block the publication of Bolton’s book, after explosive excerpts were printed by various news organizations.

This latest move comes after the administration filed a civil suit against Bolton on Tuesday. The emergency temporary restraining order filed Wednesday, which seeks to stop the release of his book on June 23, is unlikely to succeed, legal experts said, especially since copies had already been distributed to booksellers and journalists.

In a statement, Bolton’s publisher Simon and Schuster called the restraining order “a frivolous, politically motivated exercise in futility. Hundreds of thousands of copies of John Bolton’s ‘The Room Where It Happened’ have already been distributed around the country and the world. The injunction as requested by the government would accomplish nothing.’’

Bolton’s book accuses the US president of being driven by political calculations when making national security decisions.

According to Bolton, who was a national security adviser for a 17-month period, Trump pleaded with China’s president, Xi Jinping, during a 2019 summit to help his re-election prospects, which mirrored the president’s efforts to solicit political help from Ukraine.

In one instance, according to Bolton, the two world leaders were discussing hostility to China in the US when “Trump then, stunningly, turned the conversation to the coming US presidential election, alluding to China’s economic capability and pleading with Xi to ensure he’d win.”

“He stressed the importance of farmers and increased Chinese purchases of soybeans and wheat in the electoral outcome. I would print Trump’s exact words, but the government’s prepublication review process has decided otherwise.”

Bolton wrote that he believes that Congress should have expanded the scope of its impeachment inquiry to these other incidents.

Trump has derided Bolton, claiming that he is breaking the law by moving forward with plans to publish a book that contains classified information.

In its legal actions, the administration’s primary argument is that Bolton breached his non-disclosure agreement and failed to see through a process to make sure his book was properly sanitized of sensitive information, according to Bradley Moss, a lawyer who specializes in matters relating to national security.

The justice department’s latest effort to block publication is a “clever but doomed effort to circumvent existing judicial case law restricting its authority to censor the media”, Moss told the Guardian. “They are only seeking the injunction against Bolton but are then using an obscure rule of civil procedure to argue that the court can also enjoin the publisher and all commercial resellers of the books.”

In reality, little can be done to stop the book from getting out at this stage, Moss noted: “The media has copies already. The book is coming out.”

Federal prosecutors were reported on Wednesday to be mulling criminal charges against Bolton.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US President Donald Trump vowed Monday to order a military crackdown on once-in-a-generation violent protests gripping the United States, saying he was sending thousands of troops onto the streets of the capital and threatening to deploy soldiers to states unable to regain control.

The dramatic escalation came a week after the death in Minneapolis of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who had been pinned down with a knee to the neck by a police officer – leading to the worst civil unrest in decades in New York, Los Angeles and dozens of other American cities.

After being criticized for his silence on the worsening crisis, Trump struck a martial tone in a nationwide address from the White House as police fired tear gas on protesters outside.

“I am dispatching thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers, military personnel and law enforcement officers to stop the rioting, looting, vandalism, assaults, and the wanton destruction of property,” he said, AFP reported.

He slammed the previous night’s unrest in Washington as a “total disgrace” and called on governors to act quickly and forcefully to “dominate the streets.”

“If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them,“ he said, denouncing “acts of domestic terrorism”.

After his address, protesters outside the White House were cleared so the president could walk across the street to the two-century-old St Johns church, hit with graffiti and partial “We have a great country, “Trump declared as he stood before the churches boarded up windows, held up a Bible and posed for photographs.

The backlash was swift.

“What the president did today was he called out the American military against American citizens,“ New York governor Andrew Cuomo said on Twitter.

“He used the military to push out a peaceful protest so he could have a photo op at a church. It’s all just a reality TV show for this president.”

Thousands of people have participated in the demonstrations against police brutality and racism across the country since Floyd’s killing.

It was the most widespread unrest in the United States since 1968 when cities went up in flames over the slaying of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.

Many of the demonstrations have been peaceful and marked by cathartic moments such as officers hugging tearful protesters and marching or kneeling alongside them.

Others have seen rage-filled clashes between protesters and police. One person was shot dead in Louisville, Kentucky.

Floyd’s agonizing death was caught in bystander cell phone video which shows policeman Derek Chauvin pinning him down with his knee for nearly nine minutes as the 46-year-old pleaded for his life with the haunting words: “I can’t breathe!”

“The evidence is consistent with mechanical asphyxia as the cause of death, and homicide as the manner of death,“ Aleccia Wilson, a University of Michigan expert who examined his body at the family’s request, told a news conference.

An initial finding cited in a criminal complaint pointed to pre-existing conditions, outraging the family.

Shortly after the independent report, Hennepin County’s medical examiner released its official autopsy that called his death a homicide caused by “neck compression,“ although it also said he was intoxicated and pointed to heart disease.

A memorial for Floyd will take place on Thursday in Minneapolis before a service in North Carolina and a funeral on June 9 in Houston, where he grew up, family lawyer Ben Crump said.

Floyd, 46, had been accused of trying to buy cigarettes with a counterfeit bill.

The autopsy revived demands for the arrest of three other police officers who stood guard for Chauvin as Floyd lay dying.

“We are tired of oppression,” said Muna Abdi, a 31-year-old African-American woman at a peaceful demonstration at the Minnesota capitol in St. Paul.

Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and is due to appear in court on June 8.

Curfew in New York, death in Louisville

More than 40 cities have imposed curfews, including New York, after consecutive nights of tension that included looting and the trashing of parked cars.

In the upscale SoHo district, Elliot Kurland, owner of the Leica photography store, said his entire shop was emptied by looters. He estimated his loss at $1 million.

“I had been about to come here at three o’clock in the morning. My brother warned me, ‘Don’t go down. You’ll get killed’,” he said.

Louisville, the home of Muhammad Ali and Kentucky Fried Chicken, has seen especially passionate protests due to the police killing in March of an African American woman, Breonna Taylor, in her own apartment.

Trump spent most of the weekend inside the White House tweeting attacks on political rivals and the media.

In a conference call with governors Monday quickly leaked to media outlets, Trump told state leaders they were “going to look like a bunch of jerks” if they were too soft.

The governor of Illinois, J. B. Pritzker, is heard saying he was “extraordinarily concerned” by the president’s “inflammatory” rhetoric.

Joe Biden, the likely Democratic opponent of Trump in November elections, met Monday with black leaders at a church in his home of Wilmington, Delaware, and promised to form a police oversight commission in his first 100 days as president.

“Hate just hides. It doesn’t go away. And when you have somebody in power who breathes oxygen into the hate under the rocks, it comes out from under the rocks,” Biden said.
