Exploiting the current predicament, some private taxi drivers are capitalizing on the chaos by charging exorbitant fares.Reports indicate that fares as high as 8,000,000 rials are being demanded for routes that typically cost citizens a mere 500,000 rials. Many opted to forgo their private vehicles in an effort to evade the expected traffic congestion. However, this strategy seems to have backfired, as they now find themselves caught in what can only be described as the “public transport trap”.

During this lively event, people gather to jump over bonfires as a symbolic gesture to cleanse themselves of illness and bad luck, while welcoming the arrival of spring with joy and anticipation.

Of the total casualties of the accidents, 13,467 were men and 3,311 were women.

In the aforementioned period, the highest casualty rates were related to the provinces of Fars, Tehran, and Sistan-Baluchestan, respectively, and the lowest in Ilam, Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari, Ardebil, and Kohgiluyeh-Boyerahmad.

Some 317,120 people were injured in traffic accidents and referred to forensic medicine centers, which increased by 14.6 percent compared to the same period last year.

One person dies in a road accident every half hour in Iran, taking the annual death toll to 17,000, the Legal Medicine Organization announced on July 1.

According to Majlis [Iranian parliament] Research Center, the costs of road crashes amount to 8 percent of Iran’s gross domestic product.

Car crashes responsible for 1.3m deaths annually

According to the World Health Organization, every year the lives of approximately 1.3 million people are cut short as a result of a road traffic crash. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury.

Road traffic injuries cause considerable economic losses to individuals, their families, and to nations as a whole. Road traffic crashes cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product.

More than half of all road traffic deaths are among vulnerable road users including, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

Some 93% of the world’s fatalities on the roads occur in low- and middle-income countries, even though these countries have approximately 60 percent of the world’s vehicles.

Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29 years.

Road deaths

With 181 fatalities, Fars ranked first, while Isfahan and Khorasan Razavi provinces ranked second and third in traffic-related fatalities with 140 and 131 deaths, respectively, he lamented.

Ardebil (16), Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari (17), and western Tehran (17) had the lowest death tolls in road crashes happened during the summer, he stated.

He went on to say that Hamedan province, with 22 casualties, ranked first with the highest increase in traffic fatalities, while Kohgiluyeh-Boyer Ahmad and Kerman provinces come next, ISNA reported on Wednesday.

Pointing out that in some provinces the number of people killed in accidents reduced during the three past months, he said that East Azarbaijan, Kordestan and Isfahan provinces had the highest decline in road deaths with 33, 22, and 22 victims, respectively.

“Through the summer traffic scheme began on June 10, aiming to increase road safety and reduce car crashes during holiday trips, we have monitored 300 kilometers of the roads nationwide,” he explained.

He went on to regret that Friday, September 20, was the deadliest day of the week; as some 16 percent of the total fatalities have lost their live on Fridays; while Saturdays have the lowest road deaths.

He explained that during the aforementioned period, 65 percent of people were killed immediately at the crash scene, while 5 percent of deaths happened on the way to hospitals, while the rest lost their live in medical centers.

July 16 was also the deadliest day of summer; as unfortunately 52 people killed in road crashes, he regretted.

During the second and third months of summer, average speeds on the roads increased by 0.2 and 0.7 percent, respectively, he concluded.

Every year the lives of approximately 1.35 million people worldwide are cut short as a result of a road traffic crashes, WHO reports. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury.

WHO highlights that road traffic injuries can be prevented. Governments need to take action to address road safety in a holistic manner. This requires involvement from multiple sectors such as transport, police, health, education, and actions that address the safety of roads, vehicles, and road users.

Effective interventions include designing safer infrastructure and incorporating road safety features into land-use and transport planning, improving the safety features of vehicles, improving post-crash care for victims of road deaths in car crashes, setting and enforcing laws relating to key risks, and raising public awareness.

Deputy Managing Director for Ports and Economic Affairs at Iran’s PMO recounted that exports from Iranian ports show a 10 percent rise in the first 4 months of the year of 1397 vis-à-vis the same period in the last year.

Statistics from Iranian ports show that exports from Iran has soared by 10 percent and imports to Iran has fallen by 15 percent in the first 4 months of the current Iranian calendar year of 1397, according to Mohammad Ali Hasanzadeh Mohammadi, the Deputy Managing Director for Ports and Economic Affairs at PMO (Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran).

The Iranian official broke the news at a press conference at the central HQ of PMO in Tehran on Saturday.

“The change in USD-rial exchange rate in recent months has led to an increase in the export value of the country, so much so that today the trade balance in all ports of Iran have become positive,” he added.

Reviewing the statistics of this period rolled out by the port of Assalouyeh shows that 2 million and 700 thousand tons of exports have been carried out in this port, which marks an annual increase of 200 thousand tons,” recounted Hasanzadeh Mohammadi.

According to the official, the export of petroleum from the Kharg oil terminal amounted to 35,600,000 tons during this period, which registers an increase of 2,600 thousand tons compared to the same period in the last year.

He noted that after the unilateral withdrawal of the United States, a number of incentive and support packages have been prepared with the aim of reducing the negative impacts of the sanctions on trade in ports.

He added that currently rail transport plays a bigger role in total performance of the ports of the country and the arrival and departure of the cargo to the ports by rail has soared by 12%.

The manager emphasized that in a five-year horizon, a 30% increase in rail transport share is expected.

TEHRAN – Iran’s Foreign Ministry rejected as groundless a recent US report accusing Iran of involvement in human trafficking, saying the one-sided report is aimed at drawing the world’s attention away from Washington’s own failure to fulfill its commitment to combating human trafficking.

“We believe that the US government is seeking to distract the world’s attention from its commitments under international treaties and conventions in human trafficking by playing a blame game,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said in on Wednesday.

He said the “biased” US report leveling “groundless and bogus” accusations against Iran has been based upon unauthentic sources and data.

The Islamic Republic of Iran vehemently condemns the US government for releasing unreliable reports on human trafficking and leveling undue accusations against independent states, the spokesperson added.

Qassemi then noted that as a signatory of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, Iran has so far adopted massive executive and legal measures in the fight against “the nasty phenomenon” of human trafficking.

“Iran’s measures have been confirmed by the related UN-affiliated institutions and mentioned in the reports released by the UN Office on Drug and Crime,” he stressed.

Iran maintains that in the fight against human trafficking, particularly the trafficking of children and women, one needs to address the fundamental and basic causes behind the phenomenon, particularly foreign intervention and armed clashes, he said.

“It goes without saying that the US interventionist and destabilizing policies across the globe, especially in Western Asia and Africa, have paved the way for the emergence of transnational criminal gangs which are active in human trafficking,” Qassemi added.

He also described the US president’s latest request from the executive managers of International Monetary Fund and multi-lateral development banks for depriving Iran of financial facilitates as an indication of his ignorance of international organizations’ legal mechanisms.

Moreover, “requests like this amount to Washington’s stark interference in international organizations’ affairs and inflict a blow on their legal independence,” he concluded.

On Saturday, the White House announced that Iran, Venezuela, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, South Sudan and Sudan will be added to the list of the countries subject to restrictions for the fiscal year 2018 due to what it calls failing to fight human trafficking.
