TEHRAN (Iran News) – Forerign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has warned the United States against using the language of force when addressing the Iranian nation.

Amirabdollahian made the remarks in a late Saturday tweet in apparent reaction to recent accusations leveled against Iran by the US about a fictional plot to kill the former President Donald Trump’s national security advisor John Bolton.

“History ought to have taught the U.S. that language of threat against Iran and Iranians achieves nothing,” Iran’s top diplomat tweeted.

He added, “Futile attempts at deflection won’t allow the U.S. to evade responsibility for the thousands of Iranian and other victims of its involvement in terrorist crimes in our region.”

History ought to have taught the U.S. that language of threat against Iran and Iranians achieves nothing.

Futile attempts at deflection won’t allow the US to evade responsibility for the thousands of Iranian and other victims of its involvement in terrorist crimes in our region.

The U.S. Department of Justice on Wednesday charged a man identified as Shahram Poursafi with trying to arrange the killing of Bolton in retaliation for the January 2020 U.S. airstrike that martyred Iran’s legendary anti-terror commander Lieutenant Gen. Qasem Soleimani.

In the latest scenario, Poursafi has been cited as a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps who attempted to pay individuals in the United States in October 2021 a reward of $300,000 to carry out the plot in either Washington, DC, or Maryland.

Iran has brushed aside the “baseless fiction” of the U.S. government, accusing an Iranian national of plotting to assassinate former President Donald Trump’s notorious national security advisor John Bolton.

Sanctions against Iran can be lifted soon: Russian envoy

Meanwhile according to a Russian diplomat sanctions against Iran can be lifted soon, referring to the talks in Vienna for a possible return of the United States to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Permanent Representative of Russia to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said in a tweet on Sunday that sanctions against Iran can be lifted soon.

He wrote the tweet in response to a Twitter user who asked him if the West would finally decide to lift the sanctions against Iran, Russia, and other countries.

“I can’t say the same about anti-Russian #sanctions,” Ulyanov wrote, adding that anti-Russian sanctions are only partially associated with Ukraine.

“The West perceives independent policy of Russia as a strategic challenge and will hardly abandon the practice of sanctions,” he said.

Iran and the P4+1 recently resumed talks in Vienna, with indirect participation of the US, to finalize an agreement to revive the 2015 nuclear deal based on a proposal from the EU.

Police cordoned off the area and shut down a section of Rockville Pike, diverting traffic and pushing Trump supporters away, after the suspicious bag was discovered in the area near the entrance to the medical facility on Saturday night.

The Montgomery County Bomb Squad responded to the incident, with a sniffer dog seen investigating the backpack in multiple videos shared by witnesses online.

The backpack was returned to the owner, who claimed he left it at the crosswalk by accident, according to local reporters at the scene.

Hundreds of people have been rallying outside the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Bethesda since Donald Trump was flown to the presidential suite inside the facility with “mild” symptoms of COVID-19.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The spokesperson for the Iranian administration dismissed falsified reports to which the US president has referred to threaten Iran with military action, cautioning Washington that any mistake would draw Iran’s appropriate response.

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Tuesday, Ali Rabiee dismissed the recent threat from US President Donald Trump that is based upon misinformation.

In a tweet on Monday, Trump said any attack by Iran would be met with a response “1,000 times greater in magnitude”, after a Politico report alleged that Iran has plans to avenge the assassination of top commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani by killing the US ambassador to South Africa.

The Iranian spokesperson deplored such “lame, falsified and maybe even custom-ordered statements” from the president of a country that claims to be running the world and shaping the world order.

“They (Americans) launched the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan on the basis of the same falsified comments. This is a tradition of Americans and particularly the incumbent US president, and pursues nothing but upsetting order and security in the region,” Rabiee added.

Trump may be making such comments to make fodder for his election campaign, he said, denouncing the US government for the unforgivable moves against humanity and for assassinating the hero Iranian commander, Lt. General Soleimani.

“If any mistake is made, Iran will also show an appropriate response,” the spokesperson warned.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has rejected the “custom-ordered, biased and purposeful” Politico report that cites the remarks made by a purportedly US government official in an attempt to make it look real.

“We advise the American officials to stop resorting to hackneyed and worn-out methods for anti-Iran propaganda in the international arena,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman has said.

Speaking in a Russian State Duma session entitled ‘Russia-Iran relations after 39 years in post-Islamic Revolution in Iran,’ Mehdi Sanaei said that Iran-Russia cooperation has become a tradition and it is turning into a historical experience.

“After the Islamic Revolution, and following the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, relations between the two countries more and more stabilized,” Sanaei said, adding especially in the past two years, cooperation between the two countries has increased in various fields at bilateral, regional and international levels, as it shown by the increasing number of high-ranking mutual visits and consultation between the two countries.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Iran’s ambassador referred to the common threats between Iran and Russia, saying that production of narcotics in the region as a serious threat to both countries has increased 40 times over the past 15 years, and terrorism has become a major threat that require Iran-Russia further cooperation.

Sanaei explained that the US unilateralism is a major source of many challenges in the world, warning that the western and US new sanctions against Iran and Russia and also US new nuclear doctrine are two major common threats against both countries.

The Iranian ambassador further referred to the common interests of the both sides, highlighting that the two countries’ cooperation can increase the regional security in both Central Asia and the Middle East.

Iranian ambassador stated that regional stability in the Middle East and Eurasia, and bilateral cooperation in the field of energy, stabilization of energy prices, transit of goods through the north-south corridor, as well as cooperation in the Caspian Sea region can serve the intersets of both countries.

Sanaei went on to concluded that International cooperation between the two countries in international and regional areas including human rights, disarmament, preserving international agreements such as the JCPOA, finding multilateral solutions and mechanisms for resolving regional issues can increase.

TEHRAN –Experts say Saudi Arabia’s ambitions are limited by its military, which is considered an ineffective force even though the kingdom is one of the world’s largest spenders on defense.

In the past few years, Saudi Arabia has led an intervention in Yemen’s civil war, been the driving force behind a diplomatic crisis between Qatar and its neighbors, and involved itself in the politics of Lebanon.

All of these things appear to have one common objective: to push back against the influence of Iran.

But experts say Saudi Arabia’s ambitions are limited by its military, which is considered an ineffective force even though the kingdom is one of the world’s largest spenders on defense.

“The fact is, Iran is better at doing this stuff,” said Michael Knights, a Lafer fellow at The Washington Institute who specializes in the military and security affairs of Iraq, Iran, and the Persian Gulf.

“There’s nobody in the Iranian General Staff that’s afraid of Saudi Arabia on the ground,” Knights said.

Saudi Arabia’s struggles in Yemen — where its years-long conflict with the Houthi rebels has no end in sight — reveals its shortcomings against an adversary like Iran.

“What we are really talking about is how they stack up in a proxy war,” Knights said. “It’s what they are doing in the region nowadays.”

Saudi Arabia’s military faces two main problems. It is too large, making it more susceptible to organizational and quality issues, and its arsenal is designed for a large conventional war rather than the proxy wars of the 21st century.

For all Saudi Arabia’s military ineffectiveness, it’s hard to blame the kingdom’s equipment. Last year, Saudi Arabia was the fourth-largest spender on defense products in the world, just behind Russia.

According to IHS Jane’s, a British publishing company specializing in military, aerospace, and transportation topics, Saudi Arabia was the world’s largest importer of weapons in 2014.

Data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute shows that Saudi Arabia was the second-largest importer of weapons in both 2015 and 2016. Arms imports into the kingdom have increased by over 200% since 2012, according to the institute.

The weaponry being bought is not low quality, either. The majority of Saudi Arabia’s military hardware is bought from US companies. In fact, 13% of all US arms exports in 2016 were headed into the kingdom. Companies from the UK and Spain were the second- and third-largest sellers.

The Royal Saudi Air Force arsenal includes Eurofighter Typhoons, perhaps the most advanced fighter jet fielded by European militaries, and American F-15 Eagles, the undisputed king of the skies for three decades and still formidable. The Saudis even have their own model of the Eagle — the F-15SA (Saudi Advanced), which just started being delivered this year.

The Royal Saudi Land Forces, the Saudi army, have everything from M1A2 Abrams tanks and M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles to AH-64D Apache Longbow and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.

Virtually every vessel in the Royal Saudi Navy was built in American shipyards, specifically for Saudi Arabia. Its newest frigates, the Al Riyadh class, are modified versions of France’s La Fayette-class frigate.

Saudi Arabia is one of the best-equipped nations in the world. Yet the Saudi military does not strike fear into the hearts of its adversaries, or would-be foes.

Evidence of the Saudi military’s shortcomings can be seen just south of the Saudi border in Yemen.

Almost three years after Saudi Arabia, supported by other Persian Gulf and Arab states, launched a military intervention to support Yemen’s ousted president, Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, Iran-backed Houthi rebels are still active and continue to hold Yemen’s largest city and capital, Sana’a.

Additionally, the Houthis have proved capable of launching high-profile attacks against the Saudis. Those include multiple cross-border raids into Saudi Arabia, successful attacks on Emirati and Saudi navy ships, and the launching of ballistic missiles into the heartland of the kingdom.

In a more recent embarrassment, a report from The New York Times suggested that a ballistic missile fired by the Houthis that exploded at an airport in the Saudi capital of Riyadh was actually not shot down as previously claimed by the Saudi military.

The Saudis have had a hard task in Yemen. They have to operate in the Houthi heartland against a well-trained, well-funded, and well-supplied fighting force.

Saudi Arabia, however, has not deployed significant land forces into Yemen that would be required to win on the battlefield.

“We don’t know if the Saudi military is able to have a significant impact on the Yemen war, because we’ve only seen the deployment of Saudi airpower,” Knights told Business Insider.

“Generally, an airpower-only campaign is not going to have a great impact — particularly in this type of complex terrain with an enemy who is very adept at hiding from airpower and often looks like civilians,” he said.

Knights estimates that 10,000 to 20,000 troops would be required to have the desired affect. Yet the Saudi military has not deployed its ground forces — most likely because the Saudi leadership knows that, as Knights says, they “suffer from significant weaknesses.”

These weaknesses include a lack of logistical equipment and experience needed to carry out such a campaign.

“They have no experience in an expeditionary operation,” he said, noting that the Desert Storm campaign against Iraq — which Saudi Arabia did contribute to — was largely an American effort.

Additionally, Saudi ground forces as a whole are not trained well enough to where they would be able to perform successfully in large-scale operations. As such, a Saudi ground force in Yemen may cause more harm than good.

Bilal Saab, the senior fellow and director of the Defense and Security Program at the Middle East Institute, told Business Insider that Saudi Arabia understood the potential harm of its ground forces. In an email, Saab said Saudi Arabia would not deploy large contingents of ground forces “because their casualties would be severe and they most probably would cause tremendous collateral damage in Yemen.”

In Knights’ view, Saudi Arabia needs to downsize its military, focus on quality recruitment and training, and make units that are capable of fighting alongside and training local allies.

Today, local militias and tribal groups form the majority of the ground force battling the Houthis, and few if any Saudi soldiers assist them — save for a few special forces units.

“As a result,” Knights says, “there is no credible military pressure on the Houthis.”

“If Donald Trump’s threats against Iran had any value to the international community, oil prices should have rose up to about 65 dollars by now, but the US president’s words did not affect the oil market at all,” Iran’s Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said on Sunday, while referring to Trump’s recent anti-Iran positions and his move to decertify the 2015 nuclear deal.

Zanganeh went on to add, “up to this moment, oil prices have been still under the influence of OPEC, not Trump’s words. Iran’s oil sector attached no significance to Trump’s threats and we are going ahead with our agenda as strong and determined as ever.”

“They [Americans] could not achieve any results by sanctioning Russia, because Russia exports ten million barrels of oil and supplys Europe’s oil demands. They can, however, cut off one million barrel exports from the oil market, because Arab states can compensate for this amount,” Zanganeh explained, while calling for an increase in Iran’s oil exports.

He went on add, “if we manage to sign contracts worth 40 billion dollars with European countries, their interests will not allow them to stop doing business with Iran under the pretext of sanctions.”

“Total has announced that it would cancel its contract with us if the UN Security Council adopts a resolution against Iran; under the contract, if Total withdraws, the Chinese companies will take its place,” he said.

The Iranian oil minister further commended Total’s stance against Donald Trump’s anti-Iran remarks, saying “they maintained that they do not follow the US orders. Total will proceed with its contract with Iran according to the schedule.”

TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Turkish Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar underlined the necessity to safeguard geographical borders in region and fight terrorism, and reiterated the two neighboring countries’ willingness to boost defense cooperation.

During the meeting held in Tehran on Monday, Rouhani said confronting terrorism and safeguarding geographical borders in the region were the most important goals that Iran and Turkey tried to achieve through development of cooperation and bilateral relations.

“Any change in geographical borders will cause insecurity and instability to spread throughout the region.”

Iran and Turkey, as two important countries and the pillars of stability in the region, could play an influential role in resolving regional issues if they stood by each other, the president noted.

He said the central governments in Syria and Iraq should be strengthened in order to maintain the two countries’ territorial integrity, facilitate the war on terror and prevent alterations in geographical borders.

Rouhani then described terrorism, insecurity and instability as common threats facing Iran and Turkey in the region.

Urging closer military cooperation between the two neighboring countries, Rouhani said, “The armed forces of Iran and Turkey can establish constructive relations in order to repel regional threats through further expansion of cooperation and exchange of experience.”

Also at the meeting, Turkish chief of general staff said his country respected territorial integrity of all regional countries, including Syria and Iraq.

He also voiced Ankara’s readiness to develop cooperation with Iran in the fight against terrorism.

TEHRAN – An American human rights lawyer and a professor at the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Law said North Korea has no plans to attack any country, including the US first, noting that Pyongyang’s missiles serve defensive and deterrent purposes.

“I do not view North Korea’s missile launches as a threat to anyone. It is obvious to me, as it is obvious to countries such as China and Russia, that Korea is flexing its might in order to deter an attack by the US which would be aimed at regime change,” Daniel Kovalik told the Tasnim News Agency.

He added, “North Korea has no designs upon attacking anyone, much less the US which could obviously annihilate North Korea if attacked.”

Following is the full text of the interview.

Earlier, North Korea fired another ballistic missile over Japan, a direct challenge to the United States just days after a new sanctions resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council that was intended to force the country to halt its accelerating nuclear and missile tests. What’s your take on the recent launch? Do you believe more sanctions can stop Pyongyang?

Kovalik: I do not view North Korea’s missile launches as a threat to anyone. It is obvious to me, as it is obvious to countries such as China and Russia, that Korea is flexing its might in order to deter an attack by the US which would be aimed at regime change. Through its pre-emptive invasions of non-nuclear states such as Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as of Libya which gave up pursuing nuclear weapons with the hope of gaining acceptance by the West, the US and other Western powers taught North Korea that the only defense against regime change is the possession of nuclear weapons capacity.

The US warned on Friday it could revert to military options if the latest sanctions fail to curb North Korean missile and nuclear tests. Later, China said that the United States must stop threatening North Korea’s leader if a peaceful solution to the nuclear crisis is to be found. Russia also criticized the administration of Trump for its “aggressive” role in the crisis. What do you think as it seems that the test has split the world powers?

Kovalik: I believe that Russia & China are absolutely correct on this point. North Korea has no designs upon attacking anyone, much less the US which could obviously annihilate North Korea if attacked. Of course, it is the height of hypocrisy for the US to threaten North Korea for possessing and testing nuclear weapons when the US has the largest nuclear weapons stockpile in the world and is currently engaged in a $1 trillion upgrading of its nuclear weapons capacity.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said on Saturday that he aims to reach an “equilibrium” of military force with the United States. He said, “Our final goal is to establish the equilibrium of real force with the US and make the US rulers dare not talk about military option”. Do you believe the US would finally accept this? What might the future hold?

Kovalik: I think it is unlikely that the US will relent from its goal of regime change in North Korea, nor will it ever accept North Korea as a nuclear state. At the same time, the stakes for attacking North Korea would be very high, as the US is quite aware. I can only hope that cooler heads prevail, and that a war can be averted on the Korean peninsula.

As you know, the US has 28,500 troops in South Korea. The North accuses the United States of planning to invade and regularly threatens to destroy it and its Asian allies. What do you think?

Kovalik: Americans must remember that the US has already destroyed North Korea, and much of South Korea, before. During the Korean war from 1950 to 1953, the US devastated the Korean peninsula, killing millions and leveling especially North Korea to the ground. Indeed, one high-ranking US official commented that the only reason the US stopped bombing North Korea was because there was nothing left to bomb. The US even bombed all of North Korea’s dams as it left the country. Given this, and given that there was never an official end to the Korean War, North Korea has every reason to fear the U.S.’s intentions toward it. The only solution to the issues posed by North Korea is true diplomacy which will result in North Korea feeling secure from the fear of invasion and annihilation.

Do you think Pyongyang and Washington would eventually sit at the negotiating table with Russia’s mediation?

Kovalik: I truly hope that Washington is willing to engage in such a mediation as I am sure that Pyongyang would do so eagerly. Such a mediation is the only hope for peace.
