20 power plants constructed since 12th govt.

The latest report of Iran Thermal Power Generation Company showed that 49 thermal power plants, with the production capacity of 5,845 megawatts, were launched in 11th government.

With the construction of new 20 power plants, the number of thermals power plants in the country hit 69 in the current administration.

The total nominal capacity of these 69 power plants stood at 8,991 megawatts.

Iran stands at 9th place in thermal power plants’ capacity

According to the Ministry of Energy, thermal power plants account for 80.8 percent share of total power plants in the country.

The total production capacity of power plants in the world stands at 6,628 gigawatts and thermal power plants have a 61 percent share with the production capacity of 4,017 gigawatts.

Among non-thermal power plants, about 14.8 percent of total nominal capacity of power plants of the country is related to the hydroelectricity power plants, 0.9 percent to the renewable units, 1.3 percent to nuclear power plants, 0.5 percent to the diesel-powered units while the rest 1.8 percent is related to the small-scale gas units.

In Iran, gas-, steam- and combined cycle power plants with the production capacity more than 25 megawatts are known as mega thermal power plant.

In thermal power plants, thermal energy in the initial fuel is turned into electrical energy.

Big thermal power plant planned in Tehran province

A private sector initiative, the plant is one of the largest of its kind in Tehran province, which will be established in a 70-hectare area in Pishva Industrial Town.

The construction operation will commence soon and is expected to be completed in three years. The project is envisaged to create over 500 jobs during the construction and 180 jobs when the plant goes on stream.

A total of 123 thermal power plants are operational in the country. Thermal units, which either use steam, gas-powered or combined-cycle turbines, account for 65,000 MW of Iran’s total electricity production which stands at 82,000 MW.

Last year 8,000 MW was added to the national network. Plans call for increasing the output to 85,000 MW by next March.

The move to expand the power infrastructure comes to help meet the consumption demands in the sizzling season of summer, which according to reports, rise between 5% and 8% per annum.

Iran’s electricity industry is 14th in the world in terms of output and 19th in consumption.

Electricity consumption reached a peak of 58,000 megawatts last summer, some 2,600 MW more than that of a year before.
