Iran tops in registered international table tennis coaches: Official

TEHRAN (Iran News) Speaking to IRNA on Tuesday, Mehrdad Ali-Qardashi pointed to Iran’s ranking in the coaching by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), saying that with a total of 1,105 coaches, the country could manage to achieve the first place in the world.

He said that Iran currently has 1,001 active coaches at level-one, 86 coaches at level-two, and 18 coaches at level-three, whose details are available on the website of the ITTF.

Iran’s exact share of the world’s total registered coaches is calculated as 15.36 percent, meaning that approximately every 6 to 7 international coaches registered on this list is an Iranian coach.

According to him, Egypt and India are in the second and third places in the world’s table tennis coaching after Iran, contrary to a popular belief that China, Japan, and South Korea are among the top three.

Ali-Qardashi attributed the Iran’s ranking to the improved scientific level of coaches, which resulted in Iranian teenagers and young adults to defeat the Paris Olympic title-holders.

He reminded the words of the ITTF chief, a member of the International Olympic Committee and himself a world champion from Sweden, who during the meeting with the Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee praised Benyamin Faraji for defeating World and Olympics champion and world No. 1 Wang Chuqin at the 2024 Asian Table Tennis Championships.

The head of Iran’s Table Tennis Federation underscored that such praises for a teenager from West Asia, who defeated the first and second world players from China, shows the importance of Iranian coaches.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Rafa Nadal refused to make excuses for his shock defeat by Diego Schwartzman in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open, insisting that his focus is now on fine-tuning his game ahead of the French Open which begins September 27.

The nine-time Rome champion looked well off the pace in his 6-2, 7-5 loss to the 15th-ranked Argentine, an opponent he had defeated nine straight times heading into Saturday’s encounter in the Italian capital, Reuters reported.

“We can find excuses, but I didn’t play well enough. Then we have to think internally, ‘Why? How I can fix it?’” the 34-year-old Spaniard told reporters. “Now is not the moment to find excuses. It’s just to accept that I didn’t play well enough.”

“It was not my night. He played a great match, I think, and I didn’t. These things can happen. After such a long time without competing, I played two good matches, and now I played a bad one against a good opponent.

“That’s how it is. I just want to congratulate Diego and I’m going to keep working.”

Nadal, who skipped the US Open in New York due to COVID-19 concerns, said he would regroup before heading to Paris, where he will bid for a record-extending 13th title.

“It’s a completely special and unpredictable year. I probably will go back home and then let’s see what’s going on,” the 19-time Grand Slam champion said.

“I did my job here. I did a couple things well and other things bad. I’m going to keep working and keep practicing with the right attitude and try to give myself a chance to be ready.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Novak Djokovic, the men’s world Number 1 tennis player, tested positive for COVID-19, the Serbian said in a statement on Tuesday.

Croatia’s Borna Coric, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria and Viktor Troicki have previously tested positive after playing in Djokovic’s Adria Tour exhibition tournament in the Balkan region, the Guardian reported.

Djokovic revealed that he and his wife, Jelena, had both tested positive for COVID-19 after taking a test immediately after returning to Belgrade from Zadar in Croatia where the final of the tournament was canceled following Dimitrov’s positive test.

In the statement, Djokovic said, “I am extremely sorry for each individual case of infection. I hope that it will not complicate anyone’s health situation and that everyone will be fine.”

While other players remained in Zadar to be tested on Sunday night, Djokovic traveled home from the tournament to his home in Serbia before being tested for the virus, with Adria Tour organizers saying this was because he was not showing symptoms.

In Tuesday’s statement, Djokovic added, “The moment we arrived in Belgrade we went to be tested. My result is positive, just as Jelena’s, while the results of our children are negative.

“Everything we did in the past month, we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions. Our tournament meant to unite and share a message of solidarity and compassion throughout the region.

“We organized the tournament at the moment when the virus has weakened, believing that the conditions for hosting the Tour had been met. Unfortunately, this virus is still present, and it is a new reality that we are still learning to cope with and live with.”

The volley is superb: low, hard and right in the backhand corner. You couldn’t have placed it any more awkwardly with your two hands.

so Andy Murraydoubles back in retreat. Without so much as a glance, he lashes a backhand down the line, past his startled opponent, onto the line for a clean winner. “Oh, yes,” Andrew Castle purrs on the BBC commentary. Centre Court whoops and gasps. The year is 2017, the skies over Wimbledon are blue, and the top seed Andy Murray is about to go a set and a break up against Sam Querrey in the Wimbledon quarter-final. It’s also the beginning of the end.

Murray’s the world No 1. The defending Wimbledon champion. The defending Olympic champion. The preeminent figure in British sport, and certainly its most loved. He’s 30 years old and a couple of months, and after a career spent labouring in the shadow of his three mountainous contemporaries, this feels like his ascent, his moment, his time, perhaps even his era. And as you watch it back now, the knowledge that what you’re actually seeing is perhaps Murray’s last ever match at Wimbledon feels like an unforgivably cruel joke: a sick punchline you still can’t quite believe, even when you know what happens next.

What happens next is this: Querrey will break back and win the second set. Then, as the injury in Murray’s hip swells from a murmur to a warble to a full-blooded scream, the American will win 12 of the last 13 games, and the match with it. The following month, Rafa Nadal will take Murray’s cherished world No 1 ranking. And then about 18 months later – 18 months of invasive surgery and interminable gym sessions and endless rehab and aborted comebacks and unimaginable frustration and agonising pain – he’ll call it a day. The tears will flow. In a faltering voice, he’ll talk of making it through one more season, one more summer, one more Wimbledon. But the weariness and the torment in his face will tell their own story. The pain, we’ll realise, wasn’t just physical. Murray’s had enough. He’s done. It’s over.
