Academia and literary figures namely Azartash Azarnoush, Ali-Ashraf Sadeqi, Morteza Kariminia will deliver speeches about the importance of such works of art in an opening ceremony to be held on December 16, Mehr reported.

Known as “Quran-e Za’fferani”, the illuminated manuscript, which is deemed as one of earliest of its kind, represents a full copy of the Holy Quran and it also bears a Persian translation.

Named after one of the great artists of the Safavid period, Reza Abbasi Museum embraces several permanent exhibition halls that showcase various eras of the Iranian history with objects belonging the pre-Islamic era, paintings and calligraphy works amongst them.

Speaking at a press conference, he elaborated on the plans ahead of the restoration project.

“The museum will be closed for six months until the renovations are accomplished,” he said.

“Over the past decade, two parts of the museum ceiling were hastily renovated, but we need to follow up on the process more rigorously,” he added

The museum is scheduled to give occasional progress reports of the restoration process to the media.

Plans are for the exhibition space of the museum to be expanded, TMCA director Ali-Mohammad Zare’ said.

Established in 1977, the TMCA is notable in the world for its historical narration of art with the largest collection of Western art that exists in the East.

Acid rain has caused damage to “Walking Man 1” and “Standing Woman 1”, which are located in the courtyard of the museum, TMCA director Ali-Mohammad Zare’ told the Persian service of IRNA on Tuesday

The statues will be transferred to inside the museum after the restoration, he added.

The restoration will be carried out by experts from the Alberto Giacometti Foundation in Zurich, who are scheduled to arrive Tehran during March.

Plans are for the museum to undergo restoration of its equipment as well as to make changes to its interior for an expansion of the exhibit area. However, the museum will remain open to the public, Zare’ said.

He noted that the artworks kept at the museum will be transferred into a safe haven for display when the restoration project is underway at the place.

Examples of the statues are also on display at several major museums and galleries in the world.

The TMCA is home to works by many august artists of the West, including Claude Monet, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Georges Braque, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Donald Judd, Andy Warhol, René Magritte, Duane Hanson and Chuck Close.
