Zohidi Nizomiddin Shamsiddinzoda, the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Islamic Republic of Iran, also attended the meeting, IRNA reported.

The two sides emphasized the need to develop scientific and technological cooperation by forming a joint committee in the near future.

Vahid Haddadi-Asl, the Iranian official, referred to common religion and language and geographical proximity as factors that can be effective in deepening the cooperation between the two countries, saying that the past relations between the two countries have been in line with cooperation and friendship.

The Exchange of academic staff members, cooperation of academic staff members in scientific projects, and participation in scientific seminars of the two countries should be strengthened, he highlighted.

The Tajik official, for his part, pointed out that Tajikistan is interested in cooperating with Iran, saying: “By exchanging the scientific achievements of the two countries, we can further help the development of the two countries.”

“We are ready for the participation of Iranian professors in scientific conferences of Tajikistan,” the president of the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan added.

In July 2022, Peyman Salehi, the deputy science minister, said despite U.S. sanctions, the international activities of Iranian scientists have increased year by year, so that more than 35 percent of Iranian articles in Scopus have been multi-national projects.

He made the remarks at the COMSTECH (the Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation) ceremony.

Science diplomacy is the use of scientific collaborations among nations to address common problems and build constructive international partnerships.

In 2021, Iranian scientists published more than 77,000 scientific articles in the Scopus database, so that, Iran has been ranked 15th in science production, he said, IRNA reported.

The country also ranked 15th and 16th in the world in terms of scientific references, he added.

Pointing to the history of Iran’s scientific activities in the past two decades, Salehi said that Iran ranked 56th in science production in 1996 and ranked 15th in 2021. Accordingly, we are leading the region in science production.

Out of a total of 77,000 articles published by Iranian scientists in the Scopus database last year, 35.7 percent were related to international joint activities. Despite the sanctions, the amount of joint scientific activities of Iranian researchers has increased every year.

Iranian scientists are not limited by geographical and political borders, and apart from multi-national projects, the increase in Iranian researchers’ citations also proves this issue.

Referring to research centers, institutes, and science and technology hubs, he highlighted that in the past years, with the establishment of 240 innovation centers, as well as 49 science and technology parks, we have launched a complete roadmap to transform science into technology.

Speaking in a forum on trade and investment opportunities between Iran and Tajikistan which was held in Mashhad in the presence of a Tajik trade delegation, Gholam-Hossein Shafei said that one important thing that private sectors of Iran and Tajikistan should demand their governments seriously is to provide a ground for preferential trade agreement between the two states that it is supported by the commonalities and facilities of the two countries and their historic trade exchanges.

He emphasized that in the past years Tajikistan has been one of Iran’s important trade partners among its neighboring states but in some periods and due to some reasons the trade between the two countries has highly declined, although in recent one year and due to some developments and strong determination of governments, the economic exchange volume has significantly grown.

Shafei reiterated that the capacity for economic cooperation between the two states is more than what currently is and stipulated that presence of both states in two important economic blocs of Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an open chapter for leap in the economic cooperation of these two states and therefore, officials of Iran and Tajikistan can move in direction of improving exchanges and developing ties considering this important capacity.

He then pointed to abundant water resources of Tajikistan and said that regarding water resources restrictions in Iran and agro potentials in Tajikistan, both countries can cooperate in extraterrestrial cultivation to meet their demands.

Shafei noted that such issues are talked and pursued with countries like Brazil and Venezuela while capacities in the neighboring country Tajikistan has been ignored.

He also pointed to the issue of transportation and role of this field in Iran-Tajikistan ties, adding that there are many unwanted hurdles in way of Iran’s exports to Tajikistan and sometimes problems in transportation have considerable impact on both countries’ trade ties and therefore the issue of transportation and the issue of providing required infrastructures in this field should be put on the agenda of both states.

He then thanked Iran-Tajikistan Joint Chamber of Commerce for accelerating implementation of MoU which was signed between presidents of both states for forming joint employers’ council.

Meanwhile Head of Tajikistan Chamber of Commerce Mr. Jamshid Jomeh Khanzadeh in a videoconference addressing the meeting pointed to the trade exchanges between Iran and Tajikistan and expressed hope that they can develop the level of cooperation with using all facilities and capacities of Iran and Tajikistan.

He noted that trade and economic cooperation between Iran and Tajikistan is deep-rooted in the historical, cultural and lingual as well as brotherly ties of both states. He termed Iran as one of the most influential and advanced economic and industrial country, stipulating that several companies in Tajikistan have been set up with cooperation of Iranian economic activists and this shows the success and progress of Iran’s private sector in the sphere of international economic cooperation.

Jomeh Khanzadeh further emphasized that a good condition has been provided for investment in Tajikistan, noting that with the adopted policies in the county for boosting economic development, a good climate has been provided for investment and invited his Iranian brothers to take advantage of the current condition for effective presence in Tajikistan’s economic scene.

Meanwhile in the meeting Iran’s ambassador to Tajikistan Mr. Mohammad Taghi Saberi, for his part, said that Iran has asked for revoking visa between the two countries and Tajiks are studying Iran’s proposal and he hopes it would bear fruit.

Taghi Saberi who was talking online said that in new round of ties between Iran and Tajikistan, some good actions have been taken to deepen cooperation between the two states especially in the field of economy.

He went on to say that the trade volume between the two states has improved since 2019 but the capacity for economic cooperation between the two states is more than the current level. He also pointed to the launch of direct flight between Tehran and Dushanbe and said that these flights are considered as good capacity and expressed hope the number of flights would rise.

Speaking in the inaugural ceremony of the 15th edition of the Iran-Tajikistan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission, held in Tehran on Monday, he expressed hope that the bilateral trade and economic exchanges would be further expanded in the coming months and years.

The trade and economic delegations between the two countries should be more activated in order to witness further economic growth, Mehrabian emphasized.

Iran and Tajikistan have so far held 14th commissions, he said, adding that a number of 17 cooperation documents were inked in the latest visit of Tajik officials to Iran.

After the 13th government took power, President Raisi made his maiden trip to Tajikistan and in a joint meeting with the Tajik president, eight cooperation documents were signed between the two countries, in which, Iran managed to be an official member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), he said.

With the activation of economic sectors between the two countries, bilateral economic exchanges have been doubled, he underlined.

He then pointed to the economic activities exchanged between the two countries in 2013 and stated that bilateral economic exchanges exceeded in 2013 but after this year, these exchanges decreased.

Therefore, the economic sectors of Iran and Tajikistan must make their utmost efforts in line with developing trade ties more than before, Mehrabian noted, adding that the private sectors of the two countries should be more activated.

Tajik Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma, for his part, pointed to the constructive cooperation that has begun between the two countries, saying that the cooperation should be continued within the framework of organizing exhibitions and also investing in different industrial sectors.

Relations between the two countries have not been confined to the economic sector, rather, Iran and Tajikistan have taken giant strides in boosting cultural and historical fields, based on which,17 cooperation documents have been inked in this regard, Daler Juma added.

Speaking in a meeting held on the sidelines of the Second Tehran Virtual Book Fair to review the publications in Iran and Tajikistan, the Tajik official noted that enjoying cultural similarities, Tehran and Dushanbe will extend their cooperation on various fields including publishing books.

The meeting was also attended by Hazhir Tehrani, a member of the Iran-Tajikistan Friendship Association, Majid Asadi, an Iranian writer as well as Ali-Ashraf Mojtahed-Shabestari, the head of the Iran-Tajikistan Friendship Association who attended the meeting via videoconference.

Referring to the cultural similarities between the two countries, he said that Tajikistan celebrates Avicenna Day on August 18, Rudaki Day on September 22 and Rumi Day on September 30 every year.

“Reading the poems of Ferdowsi (Shahnameh), Rumi, Saadi, Hafez and Bedil Dehlavi has become a tradition in Tajikistan with the aim of encouraging the thoughts of these great poets,” the Tajik official noted.

The first Tajik newspaper, Bukhara-ye Sharif, was published on March 11, 1912, and on October 7, 1925, Erfan, the Tajik publication was published, headed by the poet Abolqassem Lahouti.

He added that the National Library of Tajikistan plays an important role in saving historical books and publications.
