TEHRAN (Iran News) – A senior official at Tehran Chamber of Commerce has said that Turkey prefers to import natural gas from Iran instead of Russia, and this a good chance for Tehran to seize the Turkish market.

Currently, Turkey imports gas from Azerbaijan, Russia, and Iran through the pipeline, and Russia owned 55 percent of the Turkish market while the remaining 45 percent is shared by Iran and Azerbaijan, said Head of Energy Commission of Tehran Chamber of Commerce Hamid-Reza Salehi, ILNA reported on July 15.

Salehi exclusively told ILNA, “The resumption of gas imports from Iran after a 3-month hiatus should be considered auspicious.”

Iran’s natural gas exports to Turkey halted due to an explosion that hit the pipeline on Turkish soil on March 31.

Salehi referred to some problems facing Russia’s “Blue Stream pipeline” that transfer gas to Turkey stressing that under the existing circumstances, Iran “must develop its liquid petroleum gas (LPG) in order to influence the Turkish market.”

Presently Ankara imports LPG by ship from the United States, Qatar, and Algeria. However, Iran can be a better actor “by selling its gas to Ankara on better terms,” said the official.

Salehi urged the need to use ‘economic diplomacy’ to be a winner in the economic competitions.

Relations between Russia and Turkey, one of Moscow’s biggest consumers of natural gas, have been patchy for the past years and are beset by the number of issues, including conflicts in Syria and Libya as well as the status of Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia.

On July 10, a Turkish court annulled a 1934 cabinet decree that had turned Hagia Sophia into a museum, paving the way for its use again as a mosque after 85 years, the Turkish official News Agency, Anadolu, reported.

After centuries of service as a church under the Byzantine Empire, Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque by Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II following his conquest of Istanbul in 1453.

In 1935, Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum.

Reconversion of the Hagia Sophia into a mosque received different reactions in the international community. It was welcomed by Muslim countries but hurt some others.

Russia’s Blue Stream pipeline, launched in the early 2000s, moved 11.1 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas to Turkey last year out of a total of 15.5 bcm exported.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (TCCIMA) is planning to hold an Iran-Armenia business forum on November 25 in Tehran, TCCIMA portal announced.

The Iran-Armenia business forum is going to be held in collaboration with the Iran-Armenia Joint Chamber of Commerce and Armenian embassy in Tehran.

Armenian Ambassador to Tehran Artashes Toumanian and TCCIMA Head Masoud Khansari, as well as representatives of renowned companies from both sides, are going to attend the forum to discuss ways of expanding mutual economic cooperation.

While the U.S. renewed sanctions on Iran are aimed at isolating the Islamic Republic both politically and economically, Iran’s relations, especially in the economic sectors, with its neighbors are seemed not to be affected by the sanctions.

The northwestern neighbor Armenia is one of the countries preserving and expanding its economic relations with Iran regardless of the sanction condition.

It has been several times emphasized by the Armenian officials as during a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran in late February, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan voiced his country’s willingness to boost cooperation with the Islamic Republic in all areas, including agriculture, transport and tourism.

As previously announced by Iran’s commercial attaché to Yerevan Mohsen Rahimi, the value of trade between Iran and Armenia has hit a record high of $364 million in 2018.

The official put the worth of Iran’s export to its neighbor at $269 million and said that natural gas, petrochemicals, iron and steel, tiles and ceramics, fruit and nuts have been the major Iranian products exported to Armenia in the past year.

Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (TCCIMA) and the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Saturday addressing issues regarding long-term cooperation.

The MOU was signed during an Iran-Syria business forum which was held for the first time after over a decade hiatus due to war in the Arab country.
The event was attended by senior officials and businessmen from both sides, including TCCIMA Head Masoud Khansari, Mahmoud Hamsho, the secretary general of the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce, Hassan Danaiefar, the senior advisor to Iran’s first vice president in Syria and Iraq affairs, Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud and Iran’s Ambassador to Damascus Javad Torkabadi.
Signing the MOU the two sides stressed all-out cooperation for development of economic ties and facilitating trade for the two countries’ businessmen and companies.
Bilateral trade low despite high political ties
Addressing the forum, TCCIMA Head Masoud Khansari mentioned the good political relations between the two countries and criticized the mismatch between the level of economic ties and political ones.
He called for both sides taking necessary measures in order to fill this gap and escalate the two countries trade ties to the levels of political partnership.
He further voiced Iranian companies and private sector’s readiness for cooperation with their Syrian counterparts in reconstruction of Syria noting that Iran is going to have a significant role in Syria’s future markets.
Khansari also underlined the strategic and geographical situation of Syria stressing the fact that Syria could be used as a hub for exporting Iranian goods to other countries.
Implementing previous agreements
In another part of the event, the secretary general of the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce expressed his country’s gratitude and satisfaction with the Islamic Republic’s all-out support and called for further expansion of ties in a variety of areas especially in economic fields.
Mahmoud Hamsho emphasized the need for implementing the previously signed economic agreements between the two sides, reassuring Iranian traders of his country’s full support for their activities in Syria.
“We will take all necessary measures to remove any probable issues and barriers in the way of trade between the two countries and to facilitate trade for the two sides’ businessmen”, Hamsho said.
Emphasizing Khansari’s remarks on the mismatch between political and economic relations, Hamsho also stressed the need for increasing the estimated $150-milion trade turnover between the two countries to much higher levels in the future.
The official mentioned creating joint ventures, establishing Iran-Syria joint chamber of commerce and holding exhibitions and exchanging economic delegations as ways of improving the economic ties between the two countries.
He further called for facilitation of customs affairs for Syrian goods in order to accelerate the process of exchanging commodities and goods between the two countries.
A roadmap for future co-op
At the end of the event, Hassan Danaiefar, the senior advisor to Iran’s first vice president in Syria and Iraq affairs, underlined the need for drawing a roadmap for addressing issues and problems in the way of trade between the two countries, saying that “there are many areas for economic cooperation like air and road transport, aviation, insurance, agriculture, industry and etc.”
He voiced Iran’s readiness for mutual cooperation in all such fields suggesting to use the two countries’ national currencies in trade.
Danaiefar further mentioned establishing joint banks and joint ventures as well as the Iran-Syria joint chamber of commerce as steps which should be taken in order to reach a desired trade level.
