In 2020, National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) announced the implementation of a new program for using the capacities of domestic knowledge-based companies, research institutions and universities for meeting the oil industry’s technological needs.

Since then, the company has conducted numerous research projects, held several events, and supported a great number of innovative ideas presented by knowledge-based companies and startups.

The RIPI

As the major research body of the Oil Ministry, the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI) has inked numerous memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with knowledge-based companies and universities for cooperation in production of new equipment or conducting ground breaking research on oil and gas industry’s new areas.

According to the RIPI Head Jafar Tofiqi, diversifying the basket of technological products in the oil industry is one of the main goals of this institution’s collaboration with other knowledge centers.

“The research institute is not just a research contractor, it plays a strategic role in addressing the needs of the oil industry,” Tofiqi has said.

Last year, RIPI also carried out several major research projects aimed at increasing the recovery factor of the country’s oil fields in collaboration with the county’s universities.

Oil and Gas Industry Innovation and Technology Park

The movement towards innovation and new technologies has not been limited to the activities of the RIPI.

The Oil Ministry officially inaugurated the country’s Oil and Gas Industry Innovation and Technology Park in mid-June; this park aims to develop new technologies and expand cooperation among the entities active in innovation and technology fields like universities, research institutes, and private companies.

The inauguration ceremony of the park was attended by The outgoing Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh,  Vice-President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari and a group of top officials in the oil industry as well as researchers and technology experts.

Speaking at the ceremony, Zanganeh said the park’s main goal was to upgrade related technologies, develop markets, improve a knowledge-based economy and create professional job opportunities.

“It is going to utilize the Islamic Republic’s existing capacities in science and technology to develop the infrastructure in oil and gas sectors,” Zanganeh said.

Now, nearly two months after the inauguration of the park, this entity has signed eight MOUs with universities and science and technology parks across the country with the aim of establishing and launching joint innovation and technology centers.

The mentioned MOUs were signed with the University of Tehran, the Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, Sahand University of Technology, Institute of Geophysics of Tehran University, Khorasan Science and Technology Park, North Khorasan Science and Technology Park, Semnan Science and Technology Park, and Yazd Science and Technology Park.

The purpose of signing the MOUs with the University of Tehran and Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz is reported to be the establishment of joint innovation centers, while the goal of signing the agreement with Sahand University of Technology, Geophysics Institute of Tehran University and Semnan Science and Technology Park is to establish joint growth centers.

In agreement with Khorasan, North Khorasan, and Yazd Science and Technology Parks, the Oil Industry Innovation and Technology Park also pursues the goal of supporting technology units active in the oil industry.

The Oil Industry Innovation and Technology Park had previously signed five cooperation agreements with the Ministry of Science, Isfahan Scientific and Research Park, as well as Shiraz University of Technology, and Amirkabir University of Science and Technology.

Professor Kim, head of the Advanced Battery Center at KAIST’s Nano-fusion Research Institute, said, “We presented a new technology to overcome the life limit of next-generation water-cell batteries. Not only is it cheaper than conventional lithium-ion batteries, but it can contribute to the expansion of renewable energy and the safe supply of energy storage systems that can run with more than 80 percent energy efficiency.”

ZBBs were found to have stable life spans of more than 5,000 cycles, even at a high current density of 100 mA/cm2. It was also confirmed that it represented the highest output and life expectancy compared to Redox flow batteries (RFBs) reported worldwide, which use other redox couples such as zinc-bromine, zinc-iodine, zinc-iron, and vanadium.

Recently, more attention has been focused on the energy storage system (ESS) that can improve energy utilization efficiency by storing new and late-night power in large quantities and supplying it to the grid if necessary to supplement the intermittent nature of renewable energy and meet peak power demand.

However, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are currently the core technology of ESSs, have been criticized for not being suitable for ESSs, which store large amounts of electricity due to their inherent risk of ignition and fire. In fact, a total of 33 cases of ESSs using LIBs in Korea had fire accidents, and 35% of all ESS facilities were shut down. This is estimated to have resulted in more than 700 billion won in losses.

As a result, water-based RFBs have drawn great attention. In particular, ZBBs that use ultra-low-cost bromide (ZnBr2) as an active material has been developed for ESSs since the 1970s, with their advantages of high cell voltage, high energy density, and low price compared to other RFBs. Until now, however, the commercialization of ZBBs has been delayed due to the short life span caused by the zinc electrodes. In particular, the uneven “dendrite” growth behavior of zinc metals during the charging and discharging process leads to internal short circuits in the battery which shorten its life.

The research team noted that self-aggregation occurs through the surface diffusion of zinc nuclei on the carbon electrode surface with low surface energy, and determined that self-aggregation was the main cause of zinc dendrite formation through quantum mechanics-based computer simulations and transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, it was found that the surface diffusion of the zinc nuclei was inhibited in certain carbon fault structures so that dendrites were not produced.

Single vacancy defect, where one carbon atom is removed, exchanges zinc nuclei and electrons and is strongly coupled, thus inhibiting surface diffusion and enabling uniform nuclear production/growth. The research team applied carbon electrodes with high-density fault structure to ZBBs, achieving life characteristics of more than 5,000 cycles at a high charge current density (100 mA/cm2), which is 30 times that of LIBs.

This ESS technology, which can supply eco-friendly electric energy such as renewable energy to the private sector through technology that can drive safe and cheap redox flow batteries for long life, is expected to draw attention once again.

Video game fans will get a first look at some of the titles coming to the new PlayStation 5 in a special event later this week.

The gaming system’s maker Sony has confirmed it will hold a Future of Gaming streaming event on Thursday night, where it will reveal the first games to be available for the upcoming console.

The PlayStation 5 is due to be released at the end of this year, around the same time as rival Microsoft’s own next-generation console, the Xbox Series X.

The two releases will be a pivotal moment for the gaming industry – Sony and Microsoft are market leaders and their next generation of consoles will set the tone for gaming habits for years to come.

Sony Interactive Entertainment president and chief executive Jim Ryan said Thursday’s event will show games which “represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe”.

“There are few things as exciting as the launch of a new console. While this road to launch has been a bit… different, we are as thrilled as ever to bring you with us on this journey to redefine the future of video games,” Mr Ryan said.

Sony had yet to reveal the PS5 console itself, although it has shared images of a new white and black controller which will come with the device.

The event on Thursday could also be used to officially reveal the system’s hardware for the first time. However, Sony has not confirmed any such plans.

Sony had originally planned to hold the virtual event last week but postponed it in the wake of the ongoing protests over the death of George Floyd in the United States.

At the time, the company said: “While we understand gamers worldwide are excited to see PS5 games, we do not feel that right now is a time for celebration, and for now, we want to stand back and allow more important voices to be heard.”

According To Iran News, Iranian Vice-President for Science and Technology Affairs Sorena Sattari highlighted the Islamic Republic’s place in the Middle East region in terms of the capacity for producing biotechnological medicines.

Addressing a ceremony in the northeastern city of Mashhad on Tuesday, Sattari said currently, 22 types of biotechnological medicines are produced domestically and this has made the country unmatched in the region in terms of medical capacity.

“In addition, there are 600 biotech companies in the country, and we are Asia’s third-largest exporter of these (biotechnological) products,” the vice-president said.

All of the products have been produced under the sever sanctions, Sattari said, adding that these innovations are the outcome of the sanctions.

Back in December, Health Minister Saeed Namaki unveiled plans to inaugurate 1,000 new health and medical projects, saying the ministry has launched the second stage of a grand plan focusing on prevention of diseases.

In comments in October, he also said Iran was exporting pharmaceuticals to countries in Europe, Africa and Central Asia.

In September, secretary of Biotechnology Development Headquarter at the Iranian Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology said Iranian biopharmaceuticals were being exported to major customers like Russia, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Turkey, adding that plans were underway to transfer Iranian biopharmaceuticals technology to Argentina.

According To Iran News, Iranian Vice-President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari said the Islamic Republic is ranked among the world’s top five countries in the science of chemistry.

During a visit to an exhibition of achievements of Iranian knowledge-based companies in the southern province of Bushehr on Saturday, Sattari said Iran has been ranked among the world’s top 10 countries in terms of scientific articles and among the best five nations in the field of chemistry.

Highlighting the great advances that the Iranian private sector has made in the gas and oil industry in recent years, the vice president said Iranian scientists have managed to produce all catalysts used in the oil industry inside the country.

Iran is the third largest producer of gas in the world, he added, noting that 70 percent of the country’s gas output comes from the South Pars region.

Pointing to the growing number of gas refineries, petrochemical plants and private companies in the South Pars region, Sattari said the energy-rich zone has provided a perfect market for knowledge-based companies.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has on various occasion highlighted the role of science as a means of power and development, urging efforts to maintain the pace of scientific growth in Iran despite enemy efforts to undermine it.

In April 2019, the Leader described a cut in Iran’s reliance on the export of oil as an opportunity, saying such an opportunity will be used for further reliance on internal capabilities.

“Although the sanctions pave the way for problems in certain cases, they will benefit the country if they are dealt with correctly and logically,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Iran said Sunday that two newly constructed satellites have passed pre-launch tests and will be transported to the nation’s space center for eventual launch, without elaborating.

Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi tweeted about the development, calling it an “important research step.”

Iran has not said when it will launch the satellites, but often coordinates its launches with national holidays.

It will celebrate the 41st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution next month.

Jahromi said two Zafar (Victory) satellites have successfully passed tests and will soon be launched into space.

In a post on his Twitter account on Sunday, Jahromi said the Zafar 1 and 2 satellites were being carried later in the day to the space center in central Iran for launch.

“Following attempts by young Iranian scientists, the Zafar 1 and 2 satellites, which have successfully passed their tests, will be deployed to the space center today so that the process for putting them in orbit can commence soon,” he said. “The satellite and the satellite carrier are both an important research step.”

He also wished success for the whole project.

Zafar, designed by Iran University of Science and Technology, is a 113-kilogram remote-sensing satellite equipped with high-resolution cameras capable of monitoring and transmitting data on natural resources as well as agricultural and environmental developments.

It is likely to be launched by Simorgh, also called Safir-2, an expendable small-capacity orbital carrier rocket.

The Zafar 1 satellite, which will be placed 500 kilometers above the earth’s surface, can orbit the planet 16 times a day, each taking 90 minutes.

The difference between Zafar 1 and Zafar 2 is that the latter is equipped with color cameras.

In September 2019, the U.S. Treasury slapped sanctions on the Iran Space Agency, Iran Space Research Center and the Astronautics Research Institute.

At the time, the ICT minister posted a photo of the galaxy on his Twitter account and wrote, “I can’t even locate the U.S. in this picture, let alone sanctions on Space! The universe & #BrightFuture belong to everyone, not to a few!”
