According to SANA, more than a thousand citizens returned to the villages and towns of al-Sial, Hasrat, al-Galaa and Qataat al-Boukamal in Deir Ezzor countryside on Sunday.

Syrian army troops secured the families’ arrival and helped them reside in makeshift settlements with all their basic needs provided.

The returnees expressed their happiness and thanked the army for saving them from terrorism.

On Monday, US Syria envoy James Jeffrey told reporters that the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had agreed to take part in the week-long Syrian Constitutional Committee amid COVID-19 outbreak.

The session, organized by UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen, is aimed at making make progress in drafting a new Syrian charter to pave the way for UN-sponsored elections, in line with a stalled 2015 UN Security Council resolution.

The office of UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen did not identify which three of the 45 members of the Constitutional Committee were infected. One third is nominated by the Syrian government, one third by the opposition, and one third by civil society.

“Committee members were tested before they travelled to Geneva, and they were tested again on arrival, and the wearing of masks and strict social distancing measures were in place when they met at the Palais des Nations,” the statement said, Reuters reported.

“Following a constructive first meeting, the Third Session of the Constitutional Committee is currently on hold. The Office of the Special Envoy will make a further announcement in due course,” it said, adding that Swiss authorities had been informed and contact-tracing was underway.

“The incident is under investigation.”

The individual’s identity will be released after their next of kin have been notified, Inherent Resolve officials stated.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani said there is “no military solution” to Syria on Wednesday during a videoconference with his counterparts in Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the war-torn country.

“The Islamic Republic believes the only solution to the Syrian crisis is political and not a military solution,” Rouhani said in a televised opening address.

“We continue to support the inter-Syrian dialogue and underline our determination to fight the terrorism of Daesh, Al-Qaeda, and other related groups.”

“I emphasize that the fight against terrorism will continue until it is completely eradicated in Syria and the region in general,” he added.

Rouhani said the illegitimate presence of US forces in Syria should end immediately.

Iran would continue its support for Syria’s legal government, he added.

The Iranian president also condemned “unilateral and inhumane sanctions” imposed by the US on Syria, calling the move an act of “economic terrorism” that violates international law, human rights, and the sovereignty of Syria.

Putin told his counterparts that there was a need for peaceful dialogue between the opposing forces in Syria’s war.

Putin said hotspots of terrorism still remain in Syria’s Idlib and other regions.

“An inclusive inter-Syrian dialogue should be actively promoted within the framework of the constitutional committee in Geneva. I propose to support this process, to help the participants meet and start a direct dialogue,” Putin said.

In Syria’s nine-year-old war, Russia and Iran are the main foreign supporters of President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, while Turkey backs militants. Under a diplomatic process dating back to 2017, they agreed to work to reduce fighting.

After worsening violence displaced nearly a million people, Turkey and Russia agreed in March to halt hostilities in northwest Syria’s Idlib region.

Erdogan told the videoconference that the priority for Syria is a lasting solution to the conflict, “achievement of calm in the field and the protection of Syria’s political unity and territorial integrity”.

“We will continue to do all we can so that our neighbor Syria finds peace, security and stability soon,” he said.

The talks are the first since September in the so-called Astana format, in which the three powers discuss developments in Syria.

The three presidents also issued a joint statement in which they “expressed their determination to stand against separatist agendas aimed at undermining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria as well as threatening the national security of neighboring countries.”

They also voiced “their opposition to the illegal seizure and transfer of oil revenues that should belong to the Syrian Arab Republic.”

The statement noted that “the Syrian conflict could only be resolved through the Syrian-led and Syrian-owned, UN-facilitated political process in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 2254.”

It also highlighted the need to “facilitate the safe and voluntary return of refugees and internally displaced persons to their original places of residence in Syria, ensuring their right to return and right to be supported.”

AFP and Reuters contributed to this story.

As the Spokesman of Iran’s ministry of foreign affairs, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi announced on Sunday, in this one-day trip, in Damascus, Zarif and the Syrian officials will discuss mutual ties, recent affairs of the region as well as regional combat against terrorism.

Back in January, President Bashar al-Assad and FM Al-Muallem held a meeting with Ali-Asghar Khaji, Iranian Foreign Minister’s Senior Assistant in Special Political Affairs in Damascus, where they highlighted the significance of consultations between Tehran and Damascus on the developments in Syria and the region.

Khaji and President Assad also discussed the prospect of activities of Syria’s Constitutional Committee and its third round of meetings, as well as the latest developments in Idlib and in the east of the Euphrates.

Pointing to the Syrian government’s recent political and military achievements, Khaji reaffirmed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s support for the Syrian Arab Republic.

For his part, President Assad touched on the close coordination between Syria and Iran, stressing that the Syrian Arab Republic would press on with the fight against terrorism and with the promotion of the government’s sovereignty over all Syrian territories despite the problems created by the sponsors of terrorism.

In an interview with Mehr News Agency, Maria Saadeh said that the war against Syria is a full-fledged one in many aspects.

She stressed that the triangle of people, the army and the resistance in Syria have obtained many achievements and today the territorial integrity of Syria has been restored.

Saadeh noted that after 9 years of war against Syria, there is an economic crisis against the people that can be called economic terrorism.

She added that the West did its best to put the people under economic pressure to undermine the government, but today the Syrian people continue to live by taking the initiative and persist on their principles and will succeed in overcoming these pressures.

In my opinion, Syria today is paying the price for defending the axis of Resistance against Israel, said the Syrian diplomat.

“At 00:30 on Thursday our air defense monitored Israeli warplanes coming from northern occupied Palestine towards Sidon, and several missiles were fired from Lebanese airspace towards the central area,” SANA news agency reported.

The source added that the missiles were intercepted successfully, and failed to attack any of their targets in Quneitra.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, including in the Golan Heights, most of them against what the Tel Aviv regime claims to be the positions of pro-Syrian forces.

The Syrian military has mostly absorbed the Israeli strikes, locking its defense systems on incoming fire.

In early 2018, Syria targeted and shot down at least one Israeli F-16 that had intruded into its airspace.

Syria has called on the United Nations to adopt necessary measures to stop Israel’s repeated acts of military aggression on the Arab country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Turkey shot down a Syrian fighter jet in Syria’s Idlib province Tuesday, as steady clashes between the two national armies continued.

State-run Syrian media said troops shot down a Turkish drone, keeping up a clash in the skies over the northwestern province that has gone on for days and signaled a new stage in the 9-year-old war, AP reported.

The Turkish Defense Ministry announced on Twitter that its forces downed an L-39 jet belonging to Syrian government forces. The Syrian military said Turkish forces targeted a warplane with a missile as it was carrying out operations against “terrorist groups” in the militant-held Idlib region, causing it to crash northwest of the town of Maaret al-Numan. The fate of the crew was not clear.

Turkey has sent thousands of troops into Idlib to support the militants holed up there but hasn’t been able to roll back the Syrian government’s advance.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he hopes to broker a cease-fire in Syria later this week when he meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

The Russian-backed offensive of the Syrian Army into the country’s last militant-held area has led to increasingly frequent clashes between the Syrian and Turkish armies that have killed dozens on both sides.

A Turkish soldier was killed and another wounded Monday night, Turkey’s Defense Ministry said, raising to 55 the number of Turkish losses this month in clashes with Syrian forces. The death toll includes 33 Turkish soldiers killed Thursday in a single airstrike.

Tensions in Idlib rose following the Syrian strike that killed the 33 Turkish soldiers. Turkey responded with drone attacks and shelling that it says have killed more than 90 Syrian troops and allied fighters.

The Turkish air force said on Sunday it shot down two Syrian warplanes after Syria’s air defenses shot down one of its drones. The Syrian pilots ejected safely.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A Syrian military source said the Arab country has closed its airspace over northwest Idlib, warning that any aircraft that violates it will be regarded as “hostile” and shot down.

“Any aircraft that breaches the Syrian airspace over Idlib will be dealt with as a hostile aircraft that must be downed and prevented from achieving their hostile goals,” the source said, SANA reported.

The army has taken the measure based on its adherence to “constitutional and national duties in defending the sovereignty of the state and protecting its security and territorial integrity,” it added.

The source also lashed out at Turkish forces for carrying out “hostile acts” against the Syrian armed forces by directly targeting their positions in Idlib and its adjacent areas and providing support to armed terrorist organizations.

“These repeated hostile Turkish acts will not succeed in saving terrorists from the strikes of the Syrian Arab Army and they prove the Turkish regime’s disavowal of all the previous agreements including Sochi memo,” it added.

The decision to shut the airspace came after the Syrian army downed a Turkish drone over the strategic city of Saraqib, which lies on the intersection of the M5 and M4 highways.

Over the past few weeks, tensions have escalated between Ankara and Damascus in Idlib, the only large territory in the hands of terrorists.

The Syrian military has managed to undo militant gains across the Arab country and bring back almost all of the Syrian soil under government control.
