TEHRAN (Iran News) – A Swiss channel to export food and medicine to Iran’s struggling population without running foul of US sanctions is off to a good start, with dozens of companies keen to take part, a senior government official said.

The Swiss Humanitarian Trade Arrangement (SHTA) aims to ensure Swiss-based exporters and trading firms in the medical, pharmaceutical and food sectors have a secure channel with a Swiss bank to guarantee payment for exports to Iran, Reuters reported.

The arrangement has been in the works since US President Donald Trump reimposed sanctions in 2018 after walking away from a deal over Iran’s nuclear program, well before the coronavirus outbreak which has hit the country.

The US, which has had no diplomatic ties with Iran since 1980, pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal signed between Iran and six world states — namely the US, Germany, France, Britain, Russia, and China — and endorsed by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231.

The US bans have severely impacted the Iranians’ access to life-saving medical supplies and hampered the country’s ability to respond to the coronavirus.

The Swiss channel went live last month after a pilot deal in January involving Swiss bank BCP and drugmaker Novartis (NOVN.S) for shipments of cancer and organ transplant drugs worth 2.3 million euros ($2.6 million).

“There are 50 companies that are interested at the moment, and we think there will be more,” said Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch, director of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) agency that oversees the program.

She did not name any of the companies.

“Iran has been especially hit by the coronavirus, and while there is no substance that helps against the virus, in general, the health situation is difficult,” she said in an interview with broadcaster SRF on Saturday.

“If we can provide some support there and ensure exports take place then we are making a good contribution.”

Food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies are exempt from US sanctions but the measures targeting anything from oil sales to shipping to finance have deterred many foreign banks from doing business with Iran – including humanitarian deals.

In the Swiss project, exporters and banks give the government information about their business activities and partners in Iran. Bern verifies it and shares it with the US Treasury, which then signs off on which deals can go ahead without those involved being sanctioned.

Swiss Channel Proof of Sanctions on Food , Medicine

According To Iran News, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said a Swiss humanitarian channel recently launched for exporting food and medicine to Iran proves that the products have been sanctioned by the US.

“In spite of the US’ false claims that medicines and foodstuffs are not sanctioned, they (US officials) have practically blocked all ways to make bank transactions in this area,” Mousavi said on his Twitter account on Wednesday.

“With the launch of the so-called humanitarian channel for the supply of pharmaceuticals, they have officially confirmed that the claim is empty and in violation of the International Criminal Court ruling and that medicine and food are sanctioned while it should not be,” the spokesman added.

The humanitarian channel to bring food and medicine to Iran has started trial operations, the Swiss and US governments said on Thursday.

The Swiss Humanitarian Trade Arrangement (SHTA) seeks to ensure that Swiss-based exporters and trading companies in the food, pharmaceutical, and medical sectors have a secure payment channel with a Swiss bank through which payments for their exports to Iran are guaranteed, a government statement said.

The remarks come against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US with Washington imposing new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since May 2018 after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A humanitarian channel to bring food and medicine to Iran has started trial operations, the Swiss government said on Thursday, helping supply Swiss goods to the struggling population without tripping over US sanctions.

The project, in the works since late 2018, has begun as a trial run with an initial payment for a shipment of medicines to Iran worth 2.3 million euros ($2.55 million), the government said, according to Reuters.

Food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies are exempt from sanctions that Washington reimposed last year after US President Donald Trump walked away from a 2015 international deal over Iran’s nuclear program. But the US measures targeting everything from oil sales to shipping and financial activities that have deterred several foreign banks from doing business with the Islamic Republic, including humanitarian deals.

Three shipments of cancer and transplant drugs have been sent to Iran through this channel and the transaction has been processed, US Special Representative Brian Hook told a press briefing.

“We are pleased to announce that we have completed the sale and delivery of cancer drugs and transplant drugs to Iran,” Hook said, adding that more companies were interested in using the channel and he was in touch with them.

“We have created a very high standard of due diligence, but we have now already had one company that has met that,” he said, adding that there were likely to be more similar transactions. “It’s the first one. There will be more to come.”

Alireza Miryousefi, the spokesman for Iran’s UN mission, said the opening of the channel was evidence of “false claims” that medicine and food were exempt from the sanctions. “If they were…then why to require this special channel?” he tweeted. He accused Washington of waging “economic terrorism against the Iranian people.”

Abdolnaser Hemmati, head of Iran’s Central Bank, was quoted as saying by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency that if Americans were sincere about supplying medicine, they must provide a banking mechanism. “Providing a Resources Transfer Mechanism and financing it is an important criterion for assessing the validity of their (US) claim.”

The project, in the works since 2018, kicked off with an initial payment for a shipment to Iran of cancer drugs and drugs required for organ transplants worth 2.3 million euros ($2.55 million), the government said.

Geneva-based bank BCP and drugmaker Novartis (NOVN.S) took part in the pilot deal, with the humanitarian channel expected to be fully operational within weeks, a spokeswoman for the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs said.

Politically neutral Switzerland has been working with the US and Iranian authorities and selected Swiss banks and Swiss companies on the plan. The US Treasury Department will provide banks involved with assurances that financial transactions can be processed without violating US law.

In return, exporters and banks will give the Swiss government detailed information about their business activities and partners in Iran. Bern will verify the information and share it with the US Treasury.

“The successful completion of these transactions provides a model for facilitating further humanitarian exports to Iran,” the US Treasury said in a statement.
