TEHRAN (Iran News) –The death penalty has been upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court for four members of a group of hardened criminals linked to Israeli intelligence services, who intended to jeopardize the nation’s security.

The final judgments against the Israeli-linked network, which were demolished in May after a combined operation by Iran’s Intelligence Ministry and the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), were announced by the judiciary’s media office in a statement on Wednesday.

The network engaged in theft, damage of both public and private property, kidnappings, and coercive gathering of false confessions among other illegal activities.

Four individuals were sentenced to death after a thorough judicial procedure. The appeal was subsequently sent to the Supreme Court, the country’s appeal authority, for final verdict.

The four major offenders, Hossein Ordoukhanzadeh, Shahin Imani Mahmoudabad, Milad Ashrafi Atbatan, and Manouchehr Shahbandi Bejandi, received death sentences for their involvement in kidnappings and intelligence collaboration with the Zionist regime, according to the final judgment.

Due to their crimes against national security, participation in kidnappings, and possession of illegal weapons, three more network members received prison sentences ranging from five to 10 years.

It is proved that members of this gang were utilizing weapons to abduct people under the direction of the intelligence operatives of the Zionist regime. Additionally, it stated that they were getting paid in cryptocurrencies.

The statement noted that the prisoners had a history of criminal activity and that they were aware that they were getting orders from people outside the country and were interfering with national security in exchange for payment.

Iran has been the target of massive surveillance by the Israeli regime with the intention of disrupting its security and stability.

The Iranian Intelligence Ministry said that the intelligence apparatus destroyed a second spy network with links to Israel in late July. The group was going to harm the nation and blow up a crucial defense site.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US President Donald Trump intends to name Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, US media reported Friday, who if confirmed would cement a solid conservative majority on the high court.

Trump said this week he will announce his pick to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Saturday, and various media outlets said it would be the 48-year-old conservative judge, AFP reported.

Citing sources close to the process, various media outlets, including The New York Times and CNN, said Trump would nominate Barrett.

If she is confirmed the court would shift to a 6-3 conservative majority.

Asked by journalists if Barrett will indeed be nominated, Trump responded: “I haven’t said that.”

But he added that he had already made a decision “in my own mind” and that Barrett is “outstanding.”

The media reports noted the mercurial Trump could still change his mind before the official announcement, expected at 5 pm (2100 GMT) Saturday.

Democratic opponents, led by presidential candidate Joe Biden, have demanded that Republicans back off on replacing liberal icon Ginsburg – who died last week – until after the November 3 election, after it’s determined whether Trump will get a second term.

Leaders of the Republican majority in the Senate, which is tasked with confirming Supreme Court nominees, said they have enough support to hold a vote on the nomination either before the election or at worst during the “lame duck” session between the election and the inauguration of the next president in January.

“We will certainly do that this year,” Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell said.

Barrett, a law professor, was only appointed to the bench for the first time in 2017. A deeply conservative Catholic, she is considered hostile to abortion rights – a key issue for many Republicans.

The left-leaning government watchdog group Accountable US was unimpressed with the reported choice. “Barrett has proven time and again that protecting businesses – not people – is her top priority,” said group president Kyle Herrig.

In 2018, the mother of seven was on the shortlist presented by Trump for a seat vacated by the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy, a position ultimately filled by Brett Kavanaugh after a ferocious confirmation battle.

Earlier Friday, Ginsburg became the first woman and first Jewish person to lie in state at the US Capitol, where the justice’s relatives, US lawmakers and dignitaries including Biden paid their respects.

Ginsburg’s last wish, reportedly relayed to her granddaughter, was for her seat to be decided by whoever wins the next election.

Trump cast doubt upon the veracity of that in an interview Monday, suggesting it could have been a ploy made up Democratic leaders.

Republican leaders have said that if the fate of a disputed election rests with the Supreme Court, they will need a full bench of judges to prevent a deadlock.

Trump refused Wednesday to clearly guarantee a peaceful transfer of power if he loses, stirring outrage among Democrats.

The Democratic leadership has vowed to do everything in their power to prevent the confirmation of a new justice before the election, but with a 53-47 Republican majority in the Senate, there is little they can do to stop it.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Despite the health risks of the coronavirus, the US Supreme Court refused Friday to stop the Trump administration from denying green cards to immigrants who use public benefits.

The court’s short, unsigned order denied the request of New York, Connecticut, Vermont, and New York City, which contended that the new policy disincentivizing immigrants’ use of Medicaid and other benefit programs could lead to the spread of COVID-19.

The justices in January had allowed the policy to take effect despite a series of lower court injunctions that had blocked it. Several cases challenging the policy are pending before federal appeals courts.

Under the Department of Homeland Security rule, legal immigrants receiving or deemed likely to need non-cash benefits for more than a year, such as food stamps, Medicaid, or housing vouchers, can be denied residency or green cards.

“To protect benefits for American citizens, immigrants must be financially self-sufficient,” Donald Trump said when the policy was introduced in August, USA Today reported.

Last month, the administration revised the rule to permit those covered by it to get treatment or preventive services for the coronavirus without jeopardizing their status. But the states contended that was insufficient.

“The rule makes it more likely that immigrants will suffer serious illness if infected and spread the virus inadvertently to others – risks that are heightened because immigrants make up a large proportion of the essential workers who continue to interact with the public,” New York Attorney General Letitia James wrote.

The rule, which originally was to take effect last October, allows immigration officials to consider public aid in deciding whether to grant legal status, along with other factors such as health, education, and household income.

In addition to considering whether an immigrant currently receives benefits, they also can decide if there is a likelihood the person will need assistance in the future.

The definition of a “public charge” focuses on those who are primarily dependent on government aid, receiving more than half their income or long-term medical care from the government.
