Behrooz Aghaei said that with respect to the infrastructure and equipment capacities created in Chabahar Port and the import of 50% of the basic goods needed by the country through this port, since September 2019, there has been a significant growth of mooring ships carrying basic goods in this strategic port.

“Despite the spread of coronavirus, which has a direct impact on the amount of trade and exchanges in the world, the process of unloading basic goods had significant growth”, he said, adding that since the beginning of the current year on 25 March, more than 560,702 tons of basic goods have entered this strategic port.

Referring to the continuation of the arrival of these goods to Chabahar port, he announced that “the ship carrying the basic goods of raw sugar weighing 66,700 tons from Brazil entered this port and its unloading operation is being carried out with modern and strategic equipment.”

The strategic port of Chabahar in southeastern Iran is the only ocean port on the Makran coast and it has a special place in the country’s economic affairs.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Sugar exports from India have gained momentum due to strong demand from Iran and Indonesia as the rupee slid to a record low, increasing exporters’ margins from overseas sales, five industry officials told Reuters.

Higher exports from India, the world’s biggest producer of sugar, could put pressure on global prices and limit shipments from rivals such as Brazil and Thailand.

“In the last few days, Iran and Indonesia were buying for May and June shipments,” Rahil Shaikh, managing director of trading company MEIR Commodities India, told Reuters.

Indian sugar mills have already dispatched 3.7 million tons out of around 4.1 million tons of contracts signed for exports in the 2019/20 marketing year ending on Sept. 30, said Shaikh and two other dealers with global trading companies.

Traders have shipped 719,922 tons to Iran so far in the season, while Indonesia bought a record 324,112 tons, according to data released by All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) on Thursday.

Indonesia has increased imports of Indian sugar after New Delhi boosted purchases of Indonesian palm oil amid a spat with rival supplier Malaysia, dealers said.

Indonesia and Malaysia account for 85 percent of the world’s palm oil output while India is the biggest buyer of the edible oil.

Large-scale Indian exports to Indonesia were made possible after Jakarta changed purity regulations for sugar imports, said Shaikh.

Malaysia has also stepped up purchases since February and has so far bought a record 327,292 tons of sugar, according to data compiled by AISTA.

Indonesian buying has now slowed but Iran is still making purchases, said a Mumbai-based dealer with the global trading firm, who is not authorized to speak to the media.

India’s total sugar exports in the current marketing year could rise above five million tons, up from earlier trade estimates of 4.5 million tons, the dealer said.

Some industry officials, including Praful Vithalani, president of AISTA, expect mills will able to achieve six million-ton target set by New Delhi for the current marketing year.

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – The Caretaker of agriculture ministry believes imports of rice and sugar will ruin domestic production and called for supporting domestic production.

In meeting with agro sector activists in Tehran, Abbas Keshavarz pointed to the current sanctions and the condition of national economy, adding that in this condition, the necessity for cooperation between producers and the government ministries is strongly felt.

He added that fortunately the price of raw material in the agriculture sector has not increased and the country has enough reserves.

He admitted that during the sanctions era, the number of misbehaviors increases and all should be careful not to stand against one another because of sanctions.

He reiterated all should support domestic production and all imports should be based on the NIMA system dollar rate and subsidized 4200-toman U.S. dollar should be earmarked for imports of the intermediary goods.

He reiterated that if the ministry lets sugar and rice be imported with the government forex rate of 4200 tomans per dollar, domestic production would ruin.

He admitted that agriculture sector needs modern technology to enhance production but all should consider that the country is in an especial condition and it challenges with certain problems and all should get along with the current condition.

He reiterated that exporters should look for new markets in order to skirt the U.S. sanctions.
