Crackdown on Palestinian supporters in US universities; Washington’s style of freedom

TEHRAN (Iran News) After the crackdown on pro-Palestinian students at US universities last spring, American universities and colleges have reinforced the rules about protests, locked campus doors, and imposed more severe punishment for holding demonstrations, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.

“Universities have seen just under 950 protest events this semester so far, compared to 3,000 last semester,” the American daily cited from a research center at Harvard University.

Nearly 50 individuals have been detained during this school year, compared to over 3,000 last semester, which is thought-provoking, according to Harvard University.

Also, Harvard University temporarily banned tens of faculty members and students from entering libraries after they sat behind the library tables to protest in silence against the war in Gaza.

The report added that Indiana University Bloomington put the protesting students, who had just lit candles for the victims of the Gaza war, under the new prohibition on activities.

The University of Pennsylvania officials and police officers, who were holding zip ties, warned the students against holding any demonstrations.

The chairman of the American Association of University Professors, Todd Wolfson, says, “The restrictions have made people afraid,” as quoted by the New York Times.

Meanwhile, experts believe that the government under US President-elect Donald Trump will “try to force further changes at institutions.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A group of teachers and academicians from across Iran met with the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Wednesday.

During the meeting, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei stated that there is no opportunity higher and better for the Islamic Republic of Iran than twelve years of school education. These twelve years are the greatest opportunity to institutionalize the ideals of the revolution.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution said: “These twelve years are the greatest opportunity for the Islamic Republic of Iran to be able to properly transmit the values, and ideals of the Revolution to this generation and to institutionalize the Islamic and Iranian identity.”

The Leader noted: “These twelve years are the best opportunity. Well, this is the mission of education, the mission of the teachers. It is a very great achievement. This is not just normal teaching, this is basic education.”

In his meeting with teachers on Wednesday, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution called them nurturers of a civilizing generation and appreciated their efforts, especially during the Corona pandemic.

“In a world where both East and West are bullying, the next generation must learn the importance of resistance from now on in order to be civilized with these teachings,” the Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei called for the promotion of skills training instead of useless content in schools, saying that issues such as Islamic lifestyle, social cooperation, study and research, jihadist activities, combating social damages, and law and order are among the skills that should be taught in schools.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the realization of the Document of Fundamental Transformation of The Education in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei said: “After more than ten years since the document was prepared and the change of ministers, the document is not operational as a complete and interconnected set.”

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution added: “If the document needs to be amended and completed, the officials should do so, while quantitative indicators should be determined to measure the progress of the document.”

According to Leader’s guidelines, young generation enjoys Islamic-Iranian identity and must grow up with the thoughts and ideas of Imam Khomeni (RA).

Human resources are the infrastructure of any civilization, the Leader said, attaching importance to the role of teachers who teach a generation that they will be founders of the new Islamic civilization in the future.

Young generation must learn the value and importance of Resistance from now, said Leader stressing the young generation must get acquainted with the importance of confronting the arrogant powers in the world.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Some 24% of students vaccinated nationwide. A total of 1,572,380 students, equaling 24 percent of the target group aged 12 to 18 nationwide, have received both doses of coronavirus vaccine, Azam Goudarzi, a health ministry official, said on Saturday.

To date, 5,607,827 students aged 12 to 18 have received the first dose of coronavirus vaccine, she added, IRNA reported.

Eighty-five percent of students across the country have so far inoculated to gain immunity against the virus, she noted.

Around 6,305,000 students are studying in the country, who have received the Sinopharm vaccine, she also said.

With the decline in COVID-19 cases, schools are gradually reopened with a delay of one month or two under health protocols.

Students in tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades attended schools on Saturday, while students in seventh, eighth, and ninth grades, as well as elementary students, will go to school from the beginning of November 22.

All educational centers in Iran have been closed since February 2020.

In order for students to keep in touch with their studies, the Ministry of Education launched a homegrown mobile application on April 9, called SHAD, providing students with distance learning programs. More than 60 percent of students and 94 percent of teachers attended 64 percent of classes through the SHAD app, whose acronym in Persian translates as the Students Education Network.

Moreover, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) also began to broadcast televised educational programs on a daily basis after school closures.

Due to the vaccination and the reduction of transmission, schools are gradually reopened since September, and about 15 million students across the country can benefit from face-to-face education with strict observance of health protocols during school hours.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has called on Iranian students to uncover the truth and eliminate ambiguities fomented by the enemy’s propaganda campaign against the Iranian nation.

“You, dear students, who are the fruits of the nation’s heart and the true hope of the country, light up your surroundings like a beacon and dispel ambiguities by paying attention to the issue of illustrating truths,” Ayatollah Khamenei said Monday.

Ayatollah Khamenei, expressing satisfaction with the fact that the youth are equipped with a lot of thought, rationality, and awareness, stressed the need to strengthen these characteristics and pointed out: “The path of Imam Hussein is a blessed path that will lead to a definite result and success, and you, the youth, will be able to lead the country to the peaks of material and spiritual happiness, inspired by this path and enlightening knowledge.”

The Leader addressed a group of University of Tehran students via a video conference during a mourning ceremony held on the occasion of Arbaeen, the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam.

Ayatollah Khamenei said while the day of Ashura, on which Imam Hussein was martyred, was the peak of Imam Hussein’s struggle and self-sacrifice, the ensuing 40-day period was the peak of the struggle to illustrate and uncover the truth, made possible by the Imam’s daughter, son and others who kept the events of Karbala alive.

The Leader touched on the opportunities which the cyberspace and social media networks offer for enlightenment and explaining ambiguities.

“However, the definite principle in the jihad of explaining and telling the truth is to use moral methods and express issues with logic, equanimity and complete rationality, taking human sentiments into account, and avoid insult, slander, lies and deception in the face of the public opinion,” he said.

“The path of Hazrat Seyyed al-Shuhada (Imam Hussein) is a blessed and sweet path that will lead to a definite outcome and success, and you, the youth, will be able to take the country to the zenith of physical and spiritual well-being, inspired by this path and enlightening knowledge, God willing,” the Leader added.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Hossein Salar Amoli announced that Iran has paved the way for presence of Foreign researchers in the country under a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Science and the Ministry of Cooperation.

Deputy Minister of Science, Research, and Technology for International Affairs broke the news on Wednesday over the issuance of temporary work permits for foreign researchers in Iran.

“ Today, all countries are competing to attract the world’s best elite forces to use their intellectual potentials in the fields of research and innovations for helping the countries’ flourishing,” he said, adding that in our country, we had a series of problems in attracting world’s renowned scientists, and the possibility of issuing work permits to them was limited to some extent.

“By signing a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare, now Iranian universities can afford for the foreign researchers’ attraction and supply living conditions for these intellectual forces,” he said, adding that the universities can grant those researcher long-term visas as well.

He went on to say that “Previously, we faced problems in paying the salaries and long-term visas of foreign researchers, however, hopefully, those problems were resolved by signing an agreement by the Deputy Minister of Science for International Affairs and Deputy Minister of Development and Entrepreneurship of the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare.

It is worth mentioning that the purpose of implementing this memorandum is to provide the necessary facilities for the presence of foreign elites, especially in Islamic countries, to improve the quality of higher education in the country.

According to the memorandum, the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare, at the request of the Minister of Science, Research and Technology, will immediately issue a three-month temporary work permit for foreign researchers and its validity can be extended for two years.

The Turkish Ministry of Education will no longer grant scholarships to students pursuing graduate studies at U.S. universities, the Yeni Şafak daily reported on Thursday based on the remarks of Deputy Minister Mustafa Safran.

Speaking at a meeting held on the occasion of an assessment report by an educators union, Safran revealed that in compliance with Turkey’s foreign policy, students will no longer be supported by the ministry for their master’s and doctoral studies in the U.S. and that universities in European and Far East countries will be favored instead.

In addition, Safran pointed out that it costs Turkey $35 million to fund graduate studies in the U.S.

“We do not consider it to be a reasonable amount, and the students do not make progress that corresponds to it. Graduate studies are usually combined together there, in which master’s programs are tremendously simple and only doctoral programs are a little strict,” Safran claimed.

Safran added that they are unable to find any logical explanation for students’ preference for American universities for their graduate studies.

“We know the quality of European universities. Plus, they don’t require tuition. From now on, we will direct our students to European and Far Eastern universities in line with Turkey’s interests. I believe this will prove to be fruitful both economically and in terms of our children retaining their cultural identity,” Safran said.

On the other hand, Safran said that with the exception of specific areas, students would not be granted scholarships for master’s studies in any foreign country.

“Turkey cannot afford to pour its money into other countries. We will no longer send students abroad for master’s degrees in fields such as education, business administration, communications and engineering. Our students will henceforth obtain their master’s degrees in these areas at our best universities and later will go on to pursue doctorates abroad,” Safran said.

Safran claimed that thanks to their new policy, taking into account only the cutbacks from the U.S., Turkey would save $20 million.
