27th Iranian Steel Industry Conference Opens in Kish

TEHRAN (Iran News) Organized by the Iranian Iron and Steel Association, the three-day event — held at the Kish International Convention Center — aims to foster collaboration between the country’s steel industry professionals, academic researchers, and postgraduate students. Participants will exchange insights, share research findings, and address technical and operational challenges in the industry.

The conference is supported by major steel companies and academic institutions and seeks to strengthen ties between industry and academia to drive innovation, problem-solving, and sustainable development within Iran’s steel sector.

Mahshid Kharazieh Esfahani, the conference’s Scientific Secretary, announced that organizers had received 360 research papers and technical reports, of which 92 were selected as research papers, 10 as industry reports, and 104 for poster presentations.

She said that 30 outstanding papers would be presented in specialized sessions and expert panels over the three days.

“At the conclusion of the conference,” Kharazieh Esfahani noted, “awards will be presented to the ‘Steel Person of the Year’, leading innovators, and top steel companies for their best green steel projects of the past year.”

This year’s event is centered on the theme “The Role of Industrial Revolutions 4.0 and 5.0 and Artificial Intelligence in Green Steel Production.” Discussions will address national policy frameworks, new manufacturing technologies, process modernization, and strategies to overcome production barriers.

She added that experts will also explore AI integration, energy management, and circular economy models, emphasizing how technological transformation can lead to cleaner, more efficient, and competitive steel production.

The conference will serve as a forum for industry leaders and researchers to present the latest scientific, technological, and operational advancements in steelmaking, while identifying policy and investment needs for the future.

In his address, Abbas Najafizadeh, Chairman of the Iranian Iron and Steel Association, urged policymakers and industrial leaders to focus not only on solving current challenges but also on strategic planning for the future of the sector.

“With 275 major production units, the steel industry plays a vital role in Iran’s economic growth and employment,” he said. “We must plan the future of this industry logically and in alignment with global technological trends.”

He highlighted Iran’s 10th-place ranking in global steel production, 6th in iron ore extraction, and 7th in iron ore reserves, with 3.8 billion tons of proven reserves and 1.5 billion tons of producible iron.

“At the current rate of extraction, the world’s iron reserves will last about 70 years, but Iran’s will last 90 years. If our steel output reaches 50 million tons per year, we still have a 32-year production window,” Najafizadeh said.

He emphasized the need to invest in green steel technologies, scrap-based production, and integration of production units to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Najafizadeh warned that without adaptation, Iran’s steel exports could face economic and regulatory barriers. “The global steel trade is entering a new era dominated by carbon border taxes and low-carbon production requirements,” he said. “To remain competitive, Iran must start training auditors and consultants specialized in green steel certification.”

He also called for the creation of a national carbon exchange and stronger government participation in green steel initiatives. “Supportive legislation, government procurement of green steel products, and the establishment of a carbon pricing system are no longer optional — they are essential,” he stated.

According to Najafizadeh, Iran’s steel industry has transitioned from the fourth industrial revolution to the fifth, and it is time to implement AI-driven solutions for smart production. “We should learn from leading nations that have already made progress in sustainable steelmaking,” he added.

Alongside the conference, an industrial exhibition featuring 235 domestic and 15 international companies is being held at the Kish International Exhibition Center.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – By using domestically-made equipment, Iran saved €1.5 billion in its steel industry for 12 years, said an official of Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO).

Amir Khorramishad, who is deputy head of IMIDRO for planning, said that after sanctions imposed on the country, about 19,000 parts and equipment in industries were made domestically, reported Mehr News Agency.

As sanctions were intensified, foreign exchange revenues in the country have declined simultaneously, he said, adding, “Despite sanctions imposed on the country, domestically-made parts and equipment have experienced an ascending trend.”

Production of steel products in Iran increased five percent during the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 20-July 21, 2020) compared to the same period last year, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Industry.

As reported, 7.2 million tons of steel were produced during the four-month period, while the figure was 6.93 million tons in the first four months of the previous year.

Iranian steel producers produced 9.483 million tons of crude steel during March 20-July 21, 2020, which was nine percent more than 8.7 million tons of the product produced in the same period last year.

According to figures released by the World Steel Association (WSA) on July 23, Iranian steelmakers produced nearly 13.9 million tons of crude steel during the first half of 2020, marking a 10.2 percent rise compared to the figure for the same period of 2019, which was 12.6 million tons.

Iran produced 2.4 million tons of crude steel in June, showing a 5.3 percent increase compared to the figure for the same month of 2019, which was 2.3 million tons.

Iran produced 31.9 million tons of crude steel in 2019, according to the WSA figures released in January.

The country plans to increase its annual steel production capacity to 55 million tons by 2025, with exports expected to reach between 10 million tons and 15 million tons per year.

WSA is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world. WSA members represent approximately 85 percent of the world’s steel producers, including over 150 steel producers, with nine of the 10 largest steel companies, national and regional steel industry associations, and steel research institutes.

Mr. Seyed Mahmoud Seyedi said that the price of foreign exchange is essentially more important for creating jobs, adding that for example, around 1200b tomans have been invested in one of the mills of the CMIC, adding that the price of the dollar was around 2700 tomans.

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

He went on to say that this amount of investment could cover or create 500 jobs directly and it means 2.5b tomans has been invested for one person.

Seyedi reiterated that if they want to construct such a plant nowadays, it will cost around 5,000b tomans due to the forex price and current inflation rate, and the plant can create 500 jobs.

He noted that the company’s last developmental project was carried out last year as its new iron sponge plant came on stream. Seyedi asserted that the project led to creation of 250 jobs.

He went on to say that Iran’s mineral and steel companies have been under sanctions since long time ago and Trump’s sanctions have been nothing new.

Seyedi said that if the country acts smartly, it can pass from this stage, adding that the country has learned how to manage during the critical condition.

He admitted that the CMIC is not an export-oriented company and its products are distributed in the domestic market but it wants to export its steel billets and even it does not happen, it will not lose anything and it can sell its products in the domestic market. He said that the company was after foreign finances for the next projects but for the time being they are on hold due to the current recession.

Seyedi went on to say that since January, the mega-module direct reduction unit of the company has started its job and it has produced around 240,000 tons of sponge ore and it is expected the output of the unit to reach 1.2m tons by the yearend.
