Iran opens first infill well at South Pars gas field

TEHRAN (Iran News) CEO of the state-run Pars Oil & Gas Company Touraj Dehghani said on Monday that the launch of the infill well in South Pars will increase gas production in the field by 2 million cubic meters (mcm) per day.

Dehghani said the well, launched in phase 12 of South Pars, is the first of 35 infill wells planned for the giant gas field.

The so-called infill drilling is the addition of wells in a hydrocarbon field to decrease well spacing and accelerate the recovery of oil and gas from reservoirs.

Oil Ministry authorities said in late December that they had installed two more drilling rigs in South Pars to speed up the infill drilling project in the field.

Officials say the project will increase output from the field by 36 mcm per day.

Iran is currently producing 716 mcm per day of gas in South Pars, the world’s largest gas reserve which is shared between Iran and Qatar.

The output is responsible for more than 70% of Iran’s total gas production.

The Iranian government has introduced major plans to maintain and increase gas production from South Pars amid a growing demand for gas in the country’s household, industry, and electricity generation sectors.

Last week, four Iranian companies were awarded some $17 billion worth of contracts to start pressure-boosting projects in the field.

Three Energy Megaprojects Come on Stream

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

TEHRAN – President Hassan Rouhani on Monday inaugurated three national large projects in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

Marking the Government Week, President Rouhani inaugurated the three megaprojects at a videoconference on Monday morning.

Implemented with a total investment of €4.7 billion, the projects include the development and improvement of the gas dispatching site and a series of gas pipelines in the national network, the first phase of Bushehr petrochemical plant, as well as a 500-MW combined cycle power plant in West Karun and its adjoining power transfer equipment and station.

The 1,200-km pipelines from the sixth section of the national gas network have the capacity to transfer 110 million cubic meters of gas from the South Pars gas field to the western provinces every day.

Another pipeline in the ninth section of the countrywide network stretches for 125 kilometers from the western areas of Behbahan into the Bazargan border crossing and north of Maku in northwestern Iran to supply 60 million cubic meters of gas per day.

The new pipeline would ensure sustainable gas supplies in the country’s cold regions and would also allow for the exports and energy exchanges with the regional countries.

The first phase of Bushehr petrochemical plant includes gas sweetening section and shops producing ethane, methanol, oxygen, and 9.6 million cubic meters of input per day for the South Pars refineries.

The 500-MW West Karun combined cycle power plant is also the other major project that would generate power for the oil and gas fields west of Karun River, including the North and South Azadegan as well as North and South Yaran oilfields.

The project also includes electricity transition equipment and gas pressure reduction station at the power plant.

Addressing the ceremony, President Rouhani highlighted his administration’s major achievements in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, saying the country’s natural gas delivery system is globally unique.

In remarks at a videoconference, he said his administration’s great achievements in the oil and gas sector would serve the Iranian nation and the next administrations.

“This administration has done great jobs in the oil and gas industries and in the joint fields,” he noted, adding that all but one of the phases in the South Pars gas field have come on stream and Iran has become self-sufficient in producing gasoline and diesel.

The president also said his administration has increased gas extraction from the joint gas fields by 2.5 times, while the crude output from the common oilfields has risen by around 6 times.

The oil output at the joint oilfields has increased from 70,000 to 400,000 barrels per day, President Rouhani stated, adding that the daily gas production has also reached one billion cubic meters.

The administration has connected 17,000 villages to the national gas network and runs at least 89 power plants with gas, he added.

Natural gas has great significance in the country, the president stressed ,saying Iran consumes around 800 million cubic meters of gas in the wintertime, which is equivalent to 5 million barrels of oil.

The president finally pointed to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei’s emphasis on preventing the sale of raw materials, saying the administration has taken proper measures in constructing petrochemical plants.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – An Iranian company is going to take over a drilling project in phase 11 of the country’s South Pars gas field as French company Total and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) dropped out of the project, the oil minister announced.

In remarks at a Tuesday meeting of a headquarters planning a surge in domestic production, Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said an Iranian company will resume drilling in the phase 11 of South Pars gas field which has remained unfinished after Total and the CNPC left the project.

The oil minister said it is high on the agenda of the administration to complete the South Pars gas field projects, adding that completion of 17 phases of the field will lead to production of 750 million cubic meters of gas.

Zanganeh also said the Oil Ministry expects to bring 17 petrochemical plants into operation in the current Iranian year, which began four weeks ago, noting that the new plants will produce $6 billion worth of new products.

In July 2017, French company Total signed a $1 billion deal to develop the South Pars gas field in cooperation with China National Petroleum Company (CNPC) and Iran’s PetroPars.

But the French pulled out of the deal in May 2018 in light of a decision by US President Donald Trump to pull his country out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and impose sanctions on Tehran.

Later, the CNPC formally replaced Total in the project, but it suspended investment in Iran later in December 2018 in response to US pressures.

The investment halt followed four rounds of talks between Chinese officials and senior US authorities who urged CNPC to refrain from injecting fresh financing in Iran.

South Pars is the world’s largest gas field.

Last Platform of SP Phases 22-24 Fully Operational

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN- Platform SPD-24B, which is the last platform of the phases 22, 23, 24 of developing South Pars gas field (in the Persian Gulf), has started transferring sour gas to onshore refineries, deputy operator of the phases’ development project told Shana.

According to Ali Asghar Sadeqi, this platform has added 500 million cubic feet (14.2 million cubic meters) of gas to the field’s output and with this last platform fully operational, the phases’ total output has reached the expected 56 million cubic meters.

The phases 22-24 are also going to produce 75,000 barrels of gas condensate, and 400 tons of sulfur per day, in addition to 50 million cubic meters of methane, 2,900 tons of LPG and 2,750 tons of ethane.

Sadeqi pointed out that the refineries of phases 22-24 are now receiving sour gas from four production platforms through two 32-inch pipelines connected to the main platforms.

The refineries, currently, have the capacity of processing 50 million cubic meters of gas, 75,000 barrels of condensate, 400 tons of sulfur and one million tons of ethane and one million tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) annually.

Platform SPD-24B was loaded at Sadra yard in the southwestern province of Bushehr in early October 2019 and its installation operations were completed in early February.

South Pars gas field, which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf, covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which, called South Pars, are in Iran’s territorial waters. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers, called North Dome, are situated in Qatar’s territorial waters.

The field is estimated to contain a significant amount of natural gas, accounting for about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate.

In mid-September last year, managing director of Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC), which is in charge of developing the gas filed, had announced that all the remaining platforms of the field will be installed by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 19, 2020).

Mohammad Meshkinfam said that the current daily consumption of natural gas in Iran is nearly equal to half of Europe’s, reported Press TV.

He said that South Pars, the world’s largest gas field, located in the Persian Gulf and shared with Qatar, is responsible for nearly 70 percent of Iran’s total gas consumption.

Meshkinfam said dozens of drilling rigs deployed at various phases of the South Pars were operating at full capacity to respond to the growing demand for heat energy in Iran.

He said his company was prepared to restore production at any of those drilling rigs that might face disruptions due to technical problems that might occur during the winter months.

The government should come up with new solutions to control excessive use of gas in the country, Meshkinfam said.

The surge of production at South Pars gas field comes after Iran started extracting more than 28 mcm per day of gas from two new platforms installed at phases 14 and 23 of the gas field.

Meshkinfam said production from another rig at Phase 24, known as Platform 24B, would start within the next two weeks.

He said a “sail-out” operation for Platform 14D, the last of four rigs planned for Phase 14 of South Pars, was now over and engineers were waiting for better weather conditions to install the rig in the Persian Gulf waters.

According To Iran News, The operation to extract natural gas from the third platform of Phase 14 of Iran’s giant South Pars gas field started off on Wednesday night, an official announced.

Mohammad Mahdi Tavassolipoor, operator of South Pars Phase 14 development project, said on Thursday that the third platform of Phase 14 of South Pars became operational Wednesday night.

The new offshore platform of Phase 14 will operate at full capacity in coming days, he added.

In May, local technicians installed the last flare stack of the offshore platforms in Phase 14.

In April 2017, the South Pars Phases 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 were inaugurated by President Hassan Rouhani.

The gas field, whose development has been divided into 28 phases, is located in the Persian Gulf straddling the maritime border between Iran and Qatar.

It covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, of which 3,700 square kilometers belongs to Iran.

It is estimated that the Iranian section of the field contains 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of condensates in place.

In spite of US sanctions imposed against the Islamic Republic of Iran, petrochemical products export from Customs Office of Pars Energy Special Economic Zone is on the verge of growth in a way that more than $500 million worth of non-oil products were exported from the country in Iranian month of Aban (Oct. 21 – Nov. 22), showing a 39 and five percent growth in terms of weight and value respectively.

Although many restrictions were imposed against the Islamic Republic of Iran in the field of shipping, insurance of vessels and oil tankers, all these cases could not prevent the growth of non-oil exports especially petrochemical products.

The Director-General of Pars Energy Special Economic Zone Ahmad Pourheidar made the remarks on Wed. in an interview with IRNA and pointed to the export of 1,626,458 tons of products from this zone in the same period and added, “these export products include methanol, propane, butane, light, and heavy polyethylene, ammonia, sulfur, styrene, crude oil, etc.”
