He made the remarks in the closing ceremony of the 3rd National Festival and the International Congress on Stem cells and Regenerative Medicine on Saturday.

The vice presidency’s Council for Stem Cell Sciences and Technologies was established to coordinate different sections of the stem cell technology and commercialization and also to develop knowledge cutting edges.

Iran is a pioneer in stem cell ecosystem with several knowledge-based companies active in this field, he said.
Over 120 Iranian companies are active in the field of stem cell technology in Iran, he said.

The knowledge-based companies can create value added, jobs and boost exports in order to develop knowledge economy, he said.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, stem cell technology is a rapidly developing field that combines the efforts of cell biologists, geneticists, and clinicians and offers hope of effective treatment for a variety of malignant and non-malignant diseases.

Stem cells are defined as totipotent progenitor cells capable of self-renewal and multilineage differentiation. Stem cells survive well and show stable division in culture, making them ideal targets for in vitro manipulation.

The congress was held from November 28 to December 1 in Tehran.

Sourena Sattari made the remarks during his visit to the western province of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari on Monday, IRNA reported.

It is the time to pay attention to modern industries through knowledge-based companies, he said.

Human resource and talented young experts are the main assets of knowledge-based companies and such an asset will not lead to economic favoritism, he added.

“Startups play a great role in Iranian market and the vice presidency supports startups in the field of healthcare and food,” he said.

Iran has more than 47 million active internet users, which create a big market in the region for ICT and IT based business, he said.

“We should trust young generation who transforms many ideas into products in places like science and technology parks,” Sattari said.

Role of universities should not be undermined

The universities have a great role in development of the country, he said.
The scientific development is a great infrastructure for other progresses in the country, he explained.

Science is the solution for the country’s problem, Sattari said.

The imposed sanction is a great opportunity for Iran, which develop self-sufficiency in the country, he added.

During his stay in Shahr-e Kord, Sattari visited the province’s science and technology park and some knowledge-based companies.

He also paid visit to Shahr-e Kord Multipurpose Gamma Irradiation Facility.

He made the remarks during a meeting with expat experts at the Sharif University of Technology.

In coming years, automobile manufacturing and steel industries would be replaced with industries created through entrepreneurship, he said.

“To promote entrepreneurship ecosystem, we should forget about oil revenues, which leads to financial corruption and economy favoritism,” he added.

Entrepreneurship promotes economic development in a society, Sattari announced.

A government which, spends the investment of its nation never can promote economic development, he continued.

“We never provide an atmosphere to develop influential human resources,” he lamented.

Sattari said that the share of knowledge increased in Iran’s economy during recent years.

“A young entrepreneur who begins his/her work in a little room, would replaces traditional system in national economy in near future,” he said.

Nowadays the government should omit economy favoritism prevailing in different fields of health, education and defense, he said.
“The government participation in different markets lead to the absence of competition in that field and promoting of economy favoritism, he lamented.

Iranian startups has a great role in development of entrepreneurship ecosystem, he said.

Sattari announced that Iran is mostly independent in the field of biotechnology industry and machinery.

He said that the best startups in Iran are launched by expat experts, who localized world-renowned startups.

“Human resources and an innovative person are the bases of knowledge-based economy,” he said.

A total of 62 startups have been initiated by expat experts in Iran, Ali Morteza Birang, the deputy vice president for international and technological affairs, announced in late May.

Plan to attract expats

Pardis Technology Park ranks first amongst 67 Iranian academic places, which planned to attract the Iranian elite abroad in the past Iranian calendar year 1396 (March 2017-March 2018). A total of 15 Iranian expat experts are working in the center.

With the support of the National Elites Foundation and Science and Technology Vice Presidency, a total of 67 universities, knowledge enterprise, technology parks and incubators performed ‘Cooperation with Iranian expat entrepreneurs and elite’ plan.

The plan aims to attract Iranians abroad to share knowledge, experience and technology ideas in the form of postdoctoral research, research opportunity, visiting fellow, working in knowledge enterprises, business startups and holding workshops at the center.

The participation of startups at the ELECOMP is very promising, Sattari said.

ELECOMP is the biggest event in the Iranian electronics and computer market. Since its first edition in 1995, the event has been providing a unique opportunity for businesses to increase their share of this huge and ever-growing market.

The way of financing in a knowledge ecosystem is a very important issue, IRNA quoted Sattari as saying on Saturday.

Up to now, the finance for startups and knowledge enterprises has been provided through loans, which is a disadvantage for entrepreneurs, he added.

He said that loans provided by banks are great aid for companies with stability but it is not a good method for providing finance for an early-stage firm.

“A startup with loans from bank will destroy in case of bankruptcy. However, venture capital funds can provide it with a finance needed,” he said.

Financing is no more possible with oil-based economy, he stressed.

New methods other than bank loans are available for financing in developed countries, he said.

Venture capital (VC) is a type of private equity, a form of financing that is provided by firms or funds to small, early-stage, emerging firms that are deemed to have high growth potential, or which have demonstrated high growth (in terms of number of employees, annual revenue, or both).

Venture capital firms or funds invest in these early-stage companies in exchange for equity, or an ownership stake, in the companies they invest in. Venture capitalists take on the risk of financing risky start-ups in the hopes that some of the firms.

Sourena Sattari made the remarks during the opening ceremony of the 11th International Exhibition of Exchange, Bank and Insurance, visiting some startup companies on April 17.

Sattari pointed to fast growth of startups in Iran due to warm welcoming of people for using services offered by them, ISNA reported on Wednesday.

“The rate of growth for some startups are 10 percent during a week,” he announced.

He called the past Iranian calendar year 1396 (March 20, 2017-March 20, 2018) as a good year for startups, which saw great achievements in startup ecosystem.

He said that startups provide transparent services to customers and this is the reason that people welcome startups.

“This new system [of startups] should be supported by insurance and exchange, otherwise the country would be a looser,” he said.

While middlemen resist the development of startups, people back innovative entrepreneurs, he said.

“No one can fight with startups. We should support these great number of talented young people and accept their novel ideas,” he explained.
