TEHRAN (Iran News) – The naval force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has unveiled a new strategic missile site at an undisclosed location, which hosts various types of advanced ballistic and cruise missiles.

The site was unveiled on Monday during a ceremony attended by the IRGC’s Chief Commander Major General Hossein Salami, Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of the IRGC’s Navy, and several other high-ranking military officials and commanders.

During the ceremony, the IRGC’s Navy displayed different types of modern cruise and ballistic missile systems with various ranges.

The IRGC forces also took delivery of new missile equipment and systems enjoying new operational capabilities, including precision firing from passive defense sites, launching mines at different ranges, 360-degree firing power, mobile launching, and the ability to counter electronic warfare. The new equipment will greatly increase the range and destructive power of the IRGC’s combat units.

All the delivered equipment has been designed and manufactured by competent Iranian specialists working with the Defense Ministry and knowledge-based companies as well as research and self-sufficiency units of the IRGC.

During the ceremony, the IRGC’s Navy also unveiled missile systems capable of changing targets once the missile is fired.

Meanwhile, the IRGC chief commander said that amid sanctions Iran has achieved great technological advances in the field of defense, saying achievements in the field of electronic warfare are within components of the IRGC’s power.

Speaking at the ceremony of joining missile equipment to the IRGC Navy Force, Major General Salami called decline and destruction as the inevitable fate of the global arrogance and the enemies.

He described the heat of jihad and resistance as the most important factor in melting the icebergs of arrogant power, saying: “Great successes are achieved in the light of resistance, jihad, empowerment and getting out of passivism, and construction, expanding and using power in Islamic Iran. It is an interconnectedness that originates from the wills of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.”

“Mechanical, technical, and modern movements also rely on electronic life, and sometimes electronic warfare is a complete level of confrontation, and superiority in this war can disable important part of the enemy’s ability and power,” the Iranian top general noted.

He added: “Communications, information, and other areas are also dependent on electronics, and efforts made in this area means creating a new advantage for us; Praise be to God … Today, Islamic Iran has a lot to say in this area.”

Referring to the fact that Iran’s IRGC has made great technological advances in the field of defense amid sanctions Major General Salami said: “It is important that our defense capabilities are expanding based on domestic capabilities, and today new developments in the field of electronic warfare are one of the components of our power.”

In the end, the IRGC Chief Commander emphasized that Iran’s defense force is fully equipped saying: “We defend our interests, dignity, and honor with authority and we are confident that we will emerge victorious in this holy defense.”

General Salami named the Islamic Revolution of Iran as a source of awareness for the world in the age of modern ignorance and stated: “Despite the alliance of all the oppressors, demons, and arrogant people of the world in the last four decades to defeat the inspirational revolution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, they have achieved nothing but despair, failure, defeat, and exhaustion.”

An asteroid, also known as the Chicxulub Impactor, hit Earth some 66 million years ago, causing a crater 180 km wide. The impact of the asteroid heated organic matter in rocks and ejected it into the atmosphere, forming soot in the stratosphere.

Soot is a strong, light-absorbing aerosol that caused global climate changes that triggered the mass extinction of dinosaurs, ammonites, and other animals, and led to the macroevolution of mammals and the appearance of humans.

Based on results of a new study, the researchers say that the probability of the mass-extinction occurring was only 13 percent. This is because the catastrophic chain of events could only have occurred if the asteroid had hit the hydrocarbon-rich areas occupying approximately 13 percent of Earth’s surface.

Led by Tohoku University Professor Kunio Kaiho, the researchers came by their hypothesis by calculating the amount of soot in the stratosphere and estimating climate changes caused by soot using a global climate model developed at the Meteorological Research Institute. The results are significant because they explain the pattern of extinction and survival.

During the study, Kaiho thought that the amount of soot and temperature anomaly might have been affected by the amount of sedimentary organic-matter. So, he analyzed the amount of sedimentary organic-matter in Earth to obtain readings of temperature anomaly caused by soot in the stratosphere.

Naga Oshima of the Meteorological Research Institute conducted the global climate model calculations to obtain temperature anomalies caused by various amounts of soot injected into the stratosphere.

Kaiho clarified the relationship between the findings and concluded that the significant cooling and mass-extinction event could have only have occurred if the asteroid had hit hydrocarbon-rich areas occupying approximately 13 percent of Earth’s surface.

If the asteroid had hit a low-medium hydrocarbon area on Earth (occupying approximately 87 percent of Earth’s surface), mass extinction could not have occurred and the Mesozoic biota could have persisted beyond the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary.

The site of the asteroid impact, therefore, changed the history of life on Earth.

According to the study, soot from hydrocarbon-rich areas caused global cooling of 8-11°C and cooling on land of 13-17°C. It also caused a decrease in precipitation by approximately 70-85 percent on land and a decrease of approximately 5-7°C in seawater temperature at a 50-m water depth, leading to mass extinction of life forms including dinosaurs and ammonites.

At the time, these hydrocarbon-rich areas were marine coastal margins, where the productivity of marine algae was generally high and sedimentary rocks were thickly deposited. Therefore, these areas contained a high amount of organic matter, part of which became soot from the heat of the asteroid’s impact.

Thus, the researchers concluded that the Chicxulub impact occurred in a hydrocarbon-rich area and is a rare case of mass extinction being caused at such an impact site.

Kaiho and Oshima are doing further studies to clarify the frequency of all the cooling events by impacts. Kaiho’s team is analyzing climate change caused by large volcanic eruptions that may have contributed to other mass extinctions. It is hoped that the results will lead to further understanding of the processes behind those mass extinctions.

TEHRAN – A senior Iranian military commander ruled out the possibility of allowing foreign access to the country’s military bases, which he said are exempt from inspection under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Based on the official stance of the Iranian Armed Forces General Staff, Iran will never allow anybody to inspect its military centers, Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Army Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said.

According to the JCPOA, the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), the military sites are exempt from inspection, he added.

Last month, the US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, travelled to Vienna to press the UN nuclear chief on her reading of Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA and asked if the IAEA planned to inspect Iranian military sites, something she has called for.

In a letter dated August 19 but released on August 23, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned about US lack of adherence to the nuclear deal.

Zarif has also said that Haley’s visit to the IAEA undermines “the independence and credibility” of IAEA inspectors.
