TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani offered his condolences on the passing of Iranian para powerlifter Siamand Rahman, saying that the sudden incident caused great sorrow and grief.

Rahman, a two-time Paralympics champion in London 2012 and Rio 2016, passed away at the age of 31 after a heart attack in his hometown Oshnavieh, northwest Iran, on Sunday.

Calling Rahman a “national hero”, the president added in his message that the Iranian sensation “with his victories in multiple sporting events, was a source of joy and pride for the Iranian people time and time again.”

“Siamand Rahman will forever remain in our minds and hearts and his steel resolve will be an inspiration to the future generations of Iranians,” Rouhani added.

In Rio Games, Rahman became the first-ever Paralympian to lift more 300kg and his bench press record of 310kg still stands in the +107kg weight class.

Meanwhile, the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) president Andrew Parsons expressed his shock and deepest condolences on the passing of Iranian powerlifter.

“The whole Paralympic movement is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Siamand Rahman,” said Parsons.

“Siamand was a pioneer for his sport, an inspiration for many in his home country, Iran, and around the world, and a fantastic ambassador for the Paralympic movement.

“He was also a wonderful human being, a gentle giant and one of the friendliest people you could ever meet.”

Considered as the world’s strongest Paralympian, Rahman set new world records nine times between 2014 and 2016, as well as winning the world title in Dubai in 2014.

He won two more world titles in 2017 and 2019, while his performance at the Rio Paralympics, when he lifted 75kg more than his nearest rival, saw him named best male at the Paralympic Sports Awards that year.

Rahman, a triple Asian Games gold medalist, had been targeting a third Paralympic gold in Tokyo and had promised to try to break his current record in the process.

The world’s stronger Paralympian will do at the Asia-Oceania Open Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan, between 8 and 12 September.

Rahman broke the 300kg barrier in the men´s over 107kg at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, lifting an unprecedented 310kg.

In 2017, he won his second world title. No one even comes close to the Iranian, who only competes against himself and his own strength.

The 30-year-old is one of the biggest Paralympic stars and will most certainly shine again at Tokyo 2020. His next competition will also be contested on Japanese soil: the Asia-Oceania Open Championships in Kitakyushu.

“I will not try to break the world record in Japan,” he said.

“I am saving my best lifts for October´s Asian Para Games and, of course, for the next Paralympic Games.

“At Indonesia 2018 and Tokyo 2020 you will witness what no other powerlifter has done before. I am saving the best possible lifts for then.”

The two-time Paralympic and world champion has already arrived in Japan and has started his trainings ahead of the competition together with the rest of the Iranian team.

Rahman has absolutely captivated the Japanese public. All those who meet him, either journalists, volunteers or other powerlifters, want to shake his hand or get a picture with their hero, Paralympic.org wrote.

Siamand Rahman of Iran claimed a gold medal in the men’s over 107kg of the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Mexico City on Friday.

After achieving what no other man had before by breaking the 300kg barrier at Rio 2016 to set a new world record of 310kg, most fans were expecting the Iranian to make history again. However, the two-time Paralympic champion was satisfied with just winning gold, Paralympic.org reported.

Despite not attempting the world record it was still an impressive display from the champion. He led comfortably from round one with a lift of 265kg, before lifts of 275kg and finally 285kg saw him secure gold with a winning margin of 41kg.

It was an Iranian 1-2 in the category as Mansour Pourmirzaei took silver following a 241kg lift, while Jordan´s Jamil Elshebli (235kg) sealed bronze.

“Why do I have to break the world record every time I compete?” he answered after being asked about the reasons why he did not try to break it again. “I cannot do it every time and, besides, I had some technical issues.

“I am happy for this title and want to dedicate it to my family, friends and all the people in Iran,” Rahman added.

There is no rival that can even come close to the Iranian. Egypt’s Amr Mosaad and Jordan’s Jamil Elshebli, who completed the podium at Rio 2016, lifted 235kg and 234kg respectively, almost 80kg less than Rahman.

During a ceremony on the sidelines of the 2017 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) General Assembly and Conference in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, on Thursday evening, the 29-year-old Iranian sportsman took the honors and was decorated with the award.

Rahman is recognized as the world’s strongest Paralympian. He is the current IPC Powerlifting World Record holder in the over-107-kilogram weight category.

On September 14, 2016, Rahman benched 310 kilograms (682 pounds), breaking his own world record by a shocking 70 kilograms. He took his second consecutive Paralympic title with the result.

Visually-impaired Belarusian Paralympic swimmer, Ihar Boki, who set two new world records in the men’s 100m butterfly S13 and 100m breaststroke SB13 divisions during the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, was also among the contenders for the 2017 Paralympic Sport Award in the Best Male category.

Another contestant vying for the award was Marcel Eric Hug, who is a Paralympian athlete from Switzerland competing in category T54 wheelchair racing events.

Hug, nicknamed “The Silver Bullet,” topped the podium with wins in the men’s 800m and marathon T54 during the 2016 Summer Paralympics. He followed that up with silver in the 1,500m and 5,000m T54.
