TEHRAN (Iran News) Team Melli began the event with a 36-23 win against China but subsequently lost to Belarus 30-24.

Belarus claimed the tournament title due to a superior goal difference over Iran. Russia and China finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

The AMF issued a certificate of designation in the name of Shiraz municipality on January 1, IRNA reported.

Shiraz has been elected because of the significant steps taken by the city in dealing with climate change and natural disasters as well as taking effective measures in water resources management.

Conducting environmental studies, establishing an urban management system to save materials and energy, expanding the use of renewable energy, and installing air pollution monitoring devices were among the measures taken in this regard.

In its announcement on Wednesday, the AMF also designated the Iranian northwestern city of Hamedan as the capital of tourism in Asia in 2024.

Asian Mayors Forum

Asian Mayors Forum (AMF) is an international non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to expanding and exalting the relations and cooperation between mayors and city managers in Asia.

AMF aims to help cities develop urban and public diplomacy, knowledge exchange, technical know-how, and experiences of urban management as well as specialized cooperation between members and also strengthen the integration between the Asian cities, mayors, and citizens toward a better life.

AMF was created by the initiative of Tehran Municipality and the support of the Asian Governments and Parliaments and its first official meeting conducted in 2008 coincided with the inauguration of Milad Tower in Tehran hosted by Tehran Municipality with the attendance of more than 100 mayors and urban managers.

The founding belief behind the forum is ‘Asia for citizens, Integration for a better life’.

4th intl. conference on conservation of environment

The fourth international conference on the conservation of environment and natural resources opened on November 22, 2023,  in the northwestern city of Ardabil and ran for two days.

Protection and restoration of forest ecosystems; forest health and biodiversity; ecological approach to forests and pastures management; climate change; environmental hazards and ecological resilience; assessing, modeling, and managing water, soil, and plant resources were the main objectives of the conference.

Remote sensing and geographic information systems; community-based forests and pastures management; laws, rights, and natural resources governance; environment and socio-economic issues; environmental and civil engineering; sustainable urban, rural, and ecotourism development; biosecurity and environmentally-friendly agriculture; and green investment, management and supply of raw materials for wood and paper industries were the other main objectives.

Environmental protection Education Day

On November 7, the fifteenth day of Esfand – the last Iranian calendar month, which falls on March 5, was approved to be registered on the national calendar as the ‘Environmental Protection Education Day’.

Nourollah Moradi, the Department of Environment’s director for educational affairs, said that the Environmental Protection Education Day is the second environmental event to be registered in the country’s official calendar, IRNA reported.

Clean Earth Day, April 22, was the first environmental event registered in the national calendar.

He referred to the registration of the Environmental Protection Education Day in the country’s official calendar as a valuable event for the environmental society of the country and said, “Education in the field of environment is one of the basic steps to preserve and protect the country’s environment.”

“It will be an important measure taken to enhance environmental literacy and empower the next generations.”

National Tree Planting Day is annually celebrated on the fifteenth day of Esfand – the last Iranian calendar month, falling on March 5. The day also marks the beginning of the National Week of Natural Resources.

Environmental protection a priority

In May 2023, Stefan Priesner, the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Iran, said the issue of environmental protection is a priority for cooperation with Iran.

According to the program under the agreement between Iran and the United Nations, the environment is one of the priorities for cooperation and efforts are being made to establish good cooperation in this field, he added.

He made the remarks in a meeting in Tehran with Ali Salajeqeh, the head of the Department of Environment.
Following up on environmental issues, including climate change, protecting biodiversity, and dealing with air pollution, is given serious attention by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Priesner stressed.

Salajeqeh, for his part, referred to holding the international conference on dealing with sand and dust storms that is due to be held in September in Iran as a great opportunity to use the experiences and maximum participation of other countries and international organizations in managing and reducing the effects of this problem.

He touched on cruel sanctions against Iran, saying that the United Nations should use international capacities such as environmental conventions to help the country fulfill commitments in climate change, biodiversity, waste management, and so on.

In February, Salajeqeh said that based on the successful experiences of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the field of combating sand and dust storms, the United Nations introduced Iran as the host of the international conference on combating sand and dust storms, IRIB reported.

Arrangements have been made with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and this meeting will be held in Tehran with the presence of the environment ministers of the world countries, Salajeqeh said.

In the field of diplomacy, the Department of Environment has held meetings with neighboring countries to the extent that Egypt has also announced its readiness to attend the Tehran meeting, he highlighted.

According to the Communications Office of Municipality of Shiraz, a photo exhibition on the grandeur of the city of Shiraz was held in its sister city of Pecs of Hungary with efforts of this office.

Peter Hoppal, a member of Hungary’s National Assembly and Head of Iran-Hungary Friendship Group and former mayor of Pecs Mr. Zsolt Páva were among the participants in the opening ceremony of the exhibition.

Before the opening of the event, mayors of Shiraz and Pecs as well as Iran’s ambassador and parliament member paid homage to the bust of great Iranian poet Hafez with putting wreath of flower.

Addressing this cultural event, Iran’s ambassador to Hungary called the day an important day in the bilateral calendar of sisterhood relation of Shiraz and Pecs, adding that they have gathered at this beautiful and historic city of Pecs to inaugurate the exhibition on Shiraz, the most prestigious and prominent city of his country in the past millenniums. Hamid Arefi said Shiraz has been the cradle of Iran’s civilization and the event bespeaks of joint determination and fruitful path that both sides are moving on this path. He hailed this cultural move and expressed hope the sincere and warm relation of these two cities would continue and soon a photo exhibition on Pecs would be held in Shiraz.

Then Mayor of Metropolis city of Shiraz Mr. Mohammad Hassan Asadi, for his part, on behalf of heaven-like Shiraz, city of hoisted domes, city of science and literature and capital of culture and art of Islamic Iran civilization, he was carrier of the message of peace and friendship of noble Iranian nation and intellectual citizens of Shiraz for the noble and dear citizens of Hungary especially citizens of the sister city of Pecs.

The Mayor of Shiraz stipulated that Shiraz is the city of Hafez whose thought is inspiration for many of big literary men of the world and it is the city of Saadi whose book of Boostan (Garden) is among the top 100 literary books of all time.

He termed Pecs as the land of the first scientific and cultural issues and noted that this city hosts the first university of Hungary which is one of the oldest universities in Europe and the first public library of Hungary has been established in this city.

Asadi went on to say that today a new chapter has opened in the valuable cultural exchanges between the two sisters cities and hailed continuity of ties between these two cities. He also praised for choosing this library for holding the exhibition which reminds us of choosing Pecs as the cultural capital of Europe in 2010.

Meanwhile mayor of Pecs expressed his satisfaction over holding the exhibition that presents cities with those valuable photos. He added that Pecs has the same meaning for Hungarians that Shiraz has for Iranians.

Shiraz and Pecs signed the sisterhood agreement on May 9, 2016, as the world’s oldest cities, Shiraz and Pécs date back to more than two thousand years ago indicating their rich culture.

Several pilgrims visiting Shah Cheragh, the shrine of Ahmad ibn Musa (AS) in the southern Iranian city, were killed in the attack carried out by ISIS last October.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Ali Ramezani, the director of the Iran Book and Literature House, an organizer of the festival, expressed his happiness over the choice of Shiraz to host the event.

“We initiated the festival in a city that has moved to center stage in the country due to the terrorist attack and now it is a place where the country’s poetic saplings will sprout,” he said.

He called poetry the major part of Iranians’ identity and said, “What encouraged us to select Shiraz to host the festival is the potential people in the Fars region have for poetry and literature.”

Ramezani expressed his hope the festival could help uncover people’s untold stories and bring unity back to the society.

Fars governor-general deputy in political, security and social issues Esmaeil Mohebbipur also attended the opening ceremony of the festival.

In a short speech, he said that different issues of the present time and the future are reflected by literati in literature and poetry, and added the country needs a future full of hope and happiness in order to progress.

Fars Culture and Islamic Guidance Department director Hamidreza Qanei also delivered a speech.

He said that Shiraz is mostly famous for being the homes of renowned poets such as Sadi and Hafez, and expressed his hope that selecting Shiraz as the host city would produce good outcomes for the event.

Ahad Dehbozorgi, Mahmud Ekramifard, Reza Esmaeili, Gholamreza Kafi and several other poets recited their latest works at the opening ceremony, which ended with unveiling a poster for the festival.

Poets from across the country will present their compositions produced over the past year at the festival.

According to the reports, Fars International Exhibitions Company as a part of exhibition industry and leader of national economy and production holds this exhibition in line with the slogan of the year for presence of the top economic, industrial and production activists focused on the presence of the knowledge-based companies.

The CEO of Fars International Exhibitions Company Mr. Ali Farhadi pointed to cooperation between private and government sectors of Fars Province in holding the first exhibition on Iranian knowledge-based companies in Shiraz as the host, adding that knowledge-based producers with mixing knowledge and production and effective utilization of it can improve the quality and quantity of the products and they can take a big step for increasing productivity and moving on course to the growth and development  and access to the knowledge-based products.

The operator of the exhibition Mr. Javad Moradpoor said that the exhibition is an opportunity for identifying the needs and unlike other exhibitions it display capabilities. He added that some 217 state-run and private companies along with educational institutes have participated in this event. He admitted that despite talks with foreign companies to participate in the event, they did not participate and only Iranian knowledge-based companies are in this exhibition.

He reiterated that 167 knowledge-based companies are in the exhibition as well as 47 top producers and it is expected some 6m people to visit the exhibition.

Meanwhile in the opening ceremony, the executive manager of Fars International Exhibitions Company Mr. Qasem Mansouri said that the exhibition is an opportunity for the knowledge-based products to be displayed for the public in order to find their ways into export markets.

The exhibition is underway on a land around 10,000 meters with several halls and it shows that Shiraz is the flag-bearer of showing knowledge-based-Iranian products and Fars Province the pioneer in supporting the knowledge-based.

According To Iran News, Shiraz Mayor calls for lifting sactions among coronavirus outbreak In a message to his counterparts from friend and sister cities and heads of international organizations, Eskandarpour Mayor of Shiraz described the sanctions against Iran amid the coronavirus outbreak as ‘war crime’, and called on the international community to speak out unanimously and call for lifting the unjust sanctions .”

His message reads:
“Dear colleague,
As you may know, around this time every year, my fellow countrymen and women across the country prepare to welcome Nowruz so as to celebrate the Iranian New Year as well as the revival of nature by commemorating this time-honored tradition and eternal heritage of the ancient Persia.
Here in Shiraz, the fragrance of hyacinths and sour orange blossoms herald the arrival of spring sooner than other parts of the country, tinkling the bell for starting to make efforts to prepare the city. And, the local government, along with people of Shiraz, who have long been noted for being hospitable by nature, get ready to host the numerous domestic and international visitors who travel to Shiraz to enjoy the breathtaking nature as well as the many historical, cultural, and religious assets of the city.
However, much to our regret, the friendly people of Shiraz are deprived of the opportunity to receive guests this year. The coronavirus outbreak, which has surged during recent days has created a very difficult situation with daunting prospects. Agonizingly, the US primary and secondary sanctions which even include a ban on importing foodstuff, medication and medical equipment have posed formidable challenges in our fight against coronavirus despite the sacrifice and selfless devotion of the healthcare sector. These unjust and inhumane sanctions, which are against the international laws, have violated the very basic human rights and targeted the life of ordinary civilians qualify as ‘war crime’.
Therefore, on behalf of the esteemed people of Shiraz, I would like to call on my fellow mayors across the globe as well as the authorities of the international organizations of local governments and communities to speak out unanimously and strongly react against the aggressive actions of the US government. Undoubtedly, the unified voice and synergic efforts of local governments – as representatives of people – to call for lifting these cruel sanctions will count as a great step toward achieving sustainable global peace.”

Ayatollah Khamenei asked the Friday prayers leader to convey his message of condolences to the bereaved families and those injured in the flood.

The Leader also urged prompt and serious action to provide relief to those affected by the incident.

At least 19 people were killed and nearly 120 others injured in the flooding that hit Shiraz on Monday morning.

Emergency and rescue organizations are on full alert in different provinces of Iran as heavy rain is predicted to continue to fall in much of the country, especially in the western and southern regions.

Last week, heavy rainfall hit northern provinces of Mazandaran and Golestan. Rivers and other streams overflew their banks as a result, in turn flooding cities, towns, villages, and farming communities. Two dams also overflew in Golestan.

Over 56,000 people have been affected in at least 70 villages in Golestan and more than 200 in Mazandaran.

The flooding in those provinces has claimed the lives of at least five people and destroyed hundreds of homes over the past few days.

High water has forced evacuations of several small farm communities as all farmland has been swamped.
