A Nigerian court ordered last week that Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife be released to go to the hospital and return for the continuation of their trial after their discharge from the hospital.

The order came after the international calls on the Nigerian government to transfer Sheikh Zakzaki to a well-equipped hospital to prevent any unfortunate incidents.

Sheikh Zakzaky, who is in his mid-sixties, has been imprisoned for four years and needs to undergo treatments before soon.

He lost his left eyesight in a 2015 raid by security forces that left more than 300 of his followers and three of his sons dead. His wife also sustained serious wounds.

A group of doctors from Pakistan, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq in a letter to the Nigerian government have pointed to Sheikh Zakzaki’s physical condition and asked the Nigerian government to transfer him to a well-equipped hospital as soon as possible. The letter is as follws:

In the name of God, The healer

From the community of Doctors

To the President of the Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Buhari.

In the past several months, the world has constantly received troubling news regarding the health of one of the prominent figures in Nigeria, Shaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. Both Skaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife are kept in prison and the health status of both of them is very alarming.

We have chosen to be doctors even after knowing that this job is very difficult and troublesome, but we chose to save people’s lives and preferred the health of the society over our personal interests.

According to the medical reports regarding the health status of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky:

1. He is suffering from a total blindness in the left eye, and is also suffering from vision problems in the right eye including glaucoma and progressive macular atrophy. According to the diagnosis of the visiting physicians, Shaikh Zakzaky will lose his vision sooner or later if the current circumstances do not change.

2. He has shown symptoms of Ischemic heart disease which can lead to Myocardial Infraction.

3. He is also suffering from severe cervical spondylosis which has resulted to nerve root compression and symptoms are progressive causing insomnia.

4. The experiments show that he has heavy metal toxicity including Lead and Cadmium. Laboratory tests that are performed on May 31st, 2019 show that blood lead level is 171.94µg/dl. Later on June 18th, 2019 this level was reported to be 231.48µg while in the last laboratory test the blood lead level was three times more than the toxicity level (grade 5 of poisoning).

Based on the points highlighted above, Shaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky should be transferred to a well- equipped medical centre that has Neuro-ophthalmologist, glaucoma specialist and low vision expert, cardiologist, orthopedist and neurologist. Also he may need to have a surgery to reduce intraocular pressure.

We, doctors of different nationalities cannot take the health of any human for granted. This is something that is inherent in our obligation as doctors. Ignoring the critical health status of Shaik Ibrahim Zahzaky can end up in irreparable consequences.

We request the government and parliament of Nigeria to immediately transfer him to a well-equipped hospital to prevent any unfortunate incidents.

In an interview with Mehr News Agency, Abu Said expressed deep concerns of the deterioration of the medical condition of Sheikh Zakzaky, who has been imprisoned for four years now, saying the top Shia cleric should be released and undergo treatments before its too late.

Sheikh Zakzaky, who is in his mid-sixties, lost his left eyesight in a 2015 raid by security forces that left more than 300 of his followers and three of his sons dead. His wife also sustained serious wounds.

Here is the full text of the interview:

Do you confirm the reports on poisoning Sheikh Zakzaky in prison?

Unfortunately, Sheikh Zakzaky’s health condition has recently been deteriorated. He has already lost one of his eyes and is not physically able to move.

According to the information available, there is a high probability that he has been injected with a substance that would kill him slowly; Nigeria’s authorities refuse to deal with the issue and follow his health condition; this has increased the concerns.

Is the Nigerian government trying to slowly kill Sheikh Zakzaky?

There is some unconfirmed information to date that a major country is pushing Nigeria’s government and security agencies to abandon Sheik Zacksaki in jail to get rid of him slowly. That is because Sheik Zakzaky has always taken national positions regarding the central issues and other strategic topics.

This is not new! Because such rumors have been spreading while no one has denied them. Therefore, strong and serious warnings have been sent to the Nigerian government about the consequences of this irrational and unjustifiable measure against Sheikh Zakzaky; this arrest is illegal.

Do the UN or other international human rights organizations pursue Sheikh Zakzaky’s case?

Yes, it [the UN] has paid attention to this issue. We have also been focusing on the issue at the International Committee on Human Rights. In the same vein, we have conveyed a message to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari through the secretary-general of ICHR in West Africa to push him to release the top cleric.

We will keep our stance and continue our efforts with the help of all the UN-supervised institutions and authorities to prevent any interference by some major countries in dealing with Sheikh Zakzaky’s issue and internal affairs.

What ways are there to push the Nigerian government to release Sheikh Zakzaky?

There are several ways to free Sheikh Zakzaky from prison, including imposing a full criminal charge on Nigeria’s highest authority.

We will send a clear letter addressed to Nigeria’s President Buhari to explain everything related to this issue. Because otherwise, the situation will get harder, and if the Sheikh Zakzaky is not treated immediately, worse things may happen to him.

Tehran Provisional Friday Prayers Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami said during this week’s sermon that the UK’s hijacking of Iranian tanker reminds the Iranian nation of a multitude of the cunning, colonial fox’s crimes. In Iran, people often refer to Britain for its long history of intervention in the country’s affairs before the 1979 revolution as the ‘cunning, colonial fox.’

Khatami said that the Britons have provoked the hatred of the Iranian nation by their actions.

He said that the Britons were spearheading a campaign to partition in Iran in 1857, 1872, 1901 and 1971. They had a long history of interfering in Iran’s internal affairs, according to the Friday Prayers leader, and now they are accompanying the United States in its unjust sanctions against the Iranian nation.

The senior cleric further thanked the Iranian Intelligence Ministry for dismantling a 17-member team of CIA agents before they could take any action inside the country.

Khatami further referred to recent reductions in the JCPOA-related commitments on the part of Iran in the face of the other parties’ lack of action to abide by their commitments, saying that Iran’s actions should be continued in line with Iranian people’s demands.

He also pointed to trip by a Palestinian delegation to Tehran headed by the Saleh al-Arouri, the deputy chairman of the political bureau of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and their meetings with high-ranking Iranian official including the Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, stressing that “as the Leader said the Islamic Republic is absolutely serious when it comes to the Palestine issue.”

He further stressed that Iran along with other liberation movements will stand against the US peace plan for Palestine dubbed as the “Deal of the Century”, describing some Arab states’ accompanying with Israel and the US as ‘treason.’

He went on to condemn continued illegal detention of top Shia cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky by the Nigerian government, saying that Iran will accept the Nigerian cleric with open arms for his medical treatment as he is in a critical condition these days.

He further blamed Saudi Arabia and Israel for Zakzaky’s case.

He highlighted the need to preserve security and stability in Nigeria and called for practicing restraint and solving differences through dialogue.

He said that it is necessary to speed up the medical treatment procedure of Sheikh Zakzaky and eliminate concerns over his health status.

Recently, the Nigerian government permitted a medical team to visit and examine Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, the leader of Nigeria’s Shia community, and his wife which was also welcomed by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

To shed more light on the issue we discussed it with Dr. Ibrahim Suleiman, senior member of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria.

Here is the full text of interview with him:

Please explain about the latest situation of Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife and the reason why they don’t enjoy freedom completely?

Sheikh’s lack of freedom is strange because three years have passed since the issuance of Sheikh Zakzaky’ freedom verdict but Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has been preventing implementation of the verdict. However, various groups and institutions have been calling for implementing freedom verdict of Nigeria’s top Muslim cleric Sheikh Ibrahim al-Zakzaky.

On the other hand, the actions of Nigeria’s president indicate that he is under control and influence of Saudi Arabia regarding Sheikh Zakzaky. Also we do not forget that Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman has admitted that they prevented Zakzaky’s activities. The silence of the great countries against the shedding of Shia blood in Nigeria is also a clear indication of our claim.

Can the leaders of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria meet Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife in prison?

Following lots of efforts made his famil, only his family members were permitted to visit Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife. Sheikh Zakzaky is about 70 years old and his wife is about 60 and they need a doctor for their treatment. He is in bad physical situation.

Do the decline of Saudi power in the region and the failure of their policies reduce the support of Nigeria’s President to suppress Nigeria’s Shia community?

The decline of Saudi power in the entire Muslim world is effective.

What is your opinion and position on ‘Deal of the Century’ and the normalization of the relations of some Arab regimes with Zionists?

Wahhabi Al Saud was founded by the Zionists and it has a Zionist system and structure. Al Saud’s allies among some Arab countries are the same.

It’s really hard but possible to stop implementation of ‘Deal of the Century’. The Palestinian Intifada is able to stop its implementation, but at a great cost.
