TEHRAN (Iran News)  Mohammad Ashuri, the governor-general of Hormozgan Province, said on Sunday night that the number of casualties in the Shahid Rajaee Port incident has risen to 40 dead and over 1,000 injured. Among the injured, 194 people remain hospitalized, while the rest have been discharged.

Nine injured victims were transferred to hospitals outside Hormozgan Province for specialized treatment.

A massive explosion ravaged Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas on Saturday. Only one of the 23 piers of the port sustained significant damage.

Minister of Interior Eskandar Momeni, appointed by President Masoud Pezeshkian to oversee the site and the ongoing relief efforts, said on Sunday night that the cause of this incident is under investigation and that a committee is collecting evidence related to the explosion.

He assured the Iranian public that those responsible would be held accountable. Momeni also said that rescue and firefighting teams responded promptly to extinguish the fire and mitigate its spread.

During a cabinet meeting on Sunday, First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref said that the investigation into the explosion’s causes is being followed very seriously. He promised that the details of the incident would be communicated to the Iranian people as soon as they are available. Aref also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and sympathy for the injured.

In response to this incident, President Pezeshkian’s cabinet declared Monday a nationwide day of mourning.

Emergency Department spokesman Mojtaba Khaledi announced the deployment of 50 rescue, relief, and medical teams at Shahid Rajaee Port. He also said that 31 helicopter flights have been conducted to assist in extinguishing the fire at the port.

Alireza Mohammadi Karajiran, the director-general of Ports and Maritime Department of southern Hormozgan province where the port lies, said that increasing the nominal capacity of the port by five million tons, and its container capacity by 500,000 TEUs, as well as boosting the investment attraction by 10 trillion rials (about $37 million) in this port are among the main objectives defined for Shahid Rajaee port in the current year.

As the official has also announced, 58,992 vessels entered the ports of Hormozgan province in the past year, loading and unloading 1.839 million TEUs of commodities.

In the past year, more than 95 million tons of commodities were loaded and unloaded in the ports of province, indicating 16.7 percent growth year on year, he added.

Of the mentioned 95 million tons, 56 million tons were non-oil goods, and 39 million tons were oil products, the official announced.

Based on the data released by Transport and Urban Development Ministry, loading and unloading of goods in the ports of Iran rose 17 percent during the past year.

The ministry’s data show that loading and unloading of goods in the country’s ports reached 152.91 million tons in the previous Iranian calendar year, while the figure stood at 130.69 million tons in the preceding year.

During the said year, loading and unloading operations in the container sector reached 2.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) with a weight of 24.57 million tons, which was 13.5 percent more than the 1.85 million TEUs in the Iranian calendar year 1399, the report said.

The loading and unloading of goods during the previous year also grew by 12.8 percent in the dry bulk sector, while in the liquid bulk sector the figure increased by 12.6 percent, in the general cargo sector rose by 13.1 percent, and in the petroleum sector grew by 22.5 percent.

While Iran is combating the U.S. unilateral sanctions on its economy, the country’s ports as the major gates of exports and imports play a significant role in this battle. This role makes all-out support to ports and more development of them serious and vital.

Such necessity has led the government to define projects for more development of the ports and also take some measures to encourage investment making in ports, in addition, to facilitate loading and unloading of goods, especially basic commodities, there.

It is worth mentioning that Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) has defined a high number of projects to develop and improve the country’s ports, as the country aims to double the capacity of its ports in a course of five years.

According to Ports and Maritime Organization, the capacity of the country’s ports has increased from 180 million tons in the Iranian calendar year 1392 (ended in March 2014) to 250 million tons in 1399 (ended in March 2021).

Enjoying the most modern container terminals and port equipment, Shahid Rajaee accounts for 85 percent of the total loading and unloading at the Iranian ports.

Given its significant role in the country’s import and export of products as well as transit and transshipment via Iran, the development of Shahid Rajaee Port has been among the most important development projects in the country.

In an interview with Tasnim, supervisor of the customs offices in Iran’s southern province of Hormozgan said the consignment that is going to go through customs includes 20 tons of masks, 71 tons of gloves, and 65 tons of disinfectants.

Abolfazl Akbarpoor also noted that the data on the medical supplies, their owners and the destination stores are available to the Customs Office and the supervisory organizations, warning that the importers will be brought to justice if they seek to hoard the goods.

He also noted that the Customs Office has already blocked the export of two containers of medical gloves weighing around 22 tons.

According to the official, some 24 ships, with 730,000 tons of different essential commodities, have been unloaded in Shahid Rajaei Port in the past 80 days.

Afifipour said the port is operating round the clock in a bid to handle the considerable bulk of cargo ships docking at its wharves.

He expounded a comprehensive report on the one-month performance of the port in the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21), named after by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution as “Boosting Domestic Production”, and stated, “totally, 4,961,597 tons of oil and non-oil products were loaded and unloaded in the port in the same period.”

Of total 4,961,597 tons of goods, non-oil and oil products accounted for 3,080,974 and 1,880,623 tons respectively, the director general emphasized.

He put the total non-oil exports volume in the largest trade port of the country at 2,511,783 tons.

He also put the total non-oil volume imported into the country in the same period through the largest trade and business port of the country at about 375,175 tons, showing a significant 43.5 percent decline as compared to the last year’s corresponding period, Afifipour added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he explained one-month performance of Shahid Rajaee Port Special Economic Zone and added, “604,740 tons of oil products were exported from the country through this port in the first month of the current year.”

Moreover, 1,275,883 tons of oil products was transported in the port in the same period within the framework of cabotage, he stressed.
