Iran Signals Readiness to Elevate Strategic Cooperation with Serbia

TEHRAN (Iran News) The discussions, held as part of Iran’s 14th government’s technology-focused diplomacy agenda, aimed to strengthen ties between the two nations. Hashemi delivered an official message from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Vučić, emphasizing Iran’s commitment to deepening collaboration in communications, information technology, cutting-edge technologies, and artificial intelligence (AI).

“Iran and Serbia have long enjoyed robust relations, and today presents an opportune moment to further solidify this bond by advancing cooperation in diverse fields, particularly IT, communications, and AI,” Hashemi stated. He highlighted Iran’s readiness to expand partnerships in cybersecurity, e-governance, digital infrastructure, data transmission, and related areas to the highest level.

Addressing Vučić, Hashemi underscored Iran’s capabilities in AI, fifth-generation (5G) networks, digital infrastructure, and tech-driven startups, expressing Iran’s desire to forge a strategic partnership with Serbia. “By establishing joint research labs and sharing technical expertise, we can take significant steps toward technological advancement in the region,” he added. Hashemi also pointed to Iran’s vibrant startup ecosystem and knowledge-based companies, noting their potential to contribute to smart city projects and digital transformation initiatives.

Iran, he assured, is prepared to collaborate on training specialized workforces and sharing expertise in AI and cybersecurity. “We are confident that through knowledge exchange, joint meetings, and mutual support, we can unlock our latent potential for the sustainable development of both nations,” Hashemi concluded.

In response, President Vučić expressed gratitude for the message from President Pezeshkian and extended warm regards to his Iranian counterpart. “Iran is an influential and key player in Asia and the Middle East, and Serbia welcomes the expansion of relations with Tehran, particularly in communications and IT,” Vučić said. He revealed that he has tasked Serbia’s Minister of Information and Telecommunications with exploring cooperation with Iran in areas such as data transmission.

Vučić praised Iran’s advancements in space telecommunications, commending its achievements in designing, building, and launching remote-sensing and communication satellites. He welcomed the prospect of Serbia benefiting from Iran’s technical know-how in these fields. Additionally, noting Iran’s expertise in establishing fiber optic factories in several countries, Vučić expressed interest in leveraging this capacity for Serbia.

During the meeting, Hashemi also presented President Vučić with Pezeshkian’s message, which included Iran’s pledge to participate in the Expo 2027 event in Belgrade.

The meeting underscored both nations’ commitment to deepening ties, with technology and innovation at the forefront of their burgeoning strategic partnership.

ICT minister departs for Serbia

TEHRAN (Iran News) Speaking during a meeting with Niaz Čardaklija, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Ambassador to Iran, Hassanzadeh emphasized that the current trade volume between the two nations is unsatisfactory and urged both governments and private sectors to devise strategies to boost economic exchanges.

Hassanzadeh highlighted Iran’s extensive capabilities across various sectors, including engineering services, road and bridge construction, hotels, buildings, hospitals, building materials, tiles, ceramics, glass, petrochemicals, steel, food industries, vegetables, greenhouse products, chemicals, polymers, medical equipment, household appliances, textiles, and apparel. “Iran offers competitive prices and high-quality goods, with agricultural products meeting global standards and being exported worldwide,” he noted. He proposed exporting semi-finished construction materials to Bosnia for final production and resale, either locally or for re-export, as a means to enhance bilateral trade.

The ICCIMA president also pointed to the ease of visa issuance between the two countries as a foundation for expanding tourism, particularly in the health sector, which could further deepen cooperation. Stressing the importance of commercial delegations, he added, “We are ready to host Bosnian trade delegations and hope conditions will allow Iranian delegations to visit Bosnia as well.”

Ambassador Čardaklija, representing a nation of three million people, encouraged Iranian traders to view Bosnia not just as a standalone market but as a gateway to the Balkans and broader European markets. “Re-exporting goods could be a promising avenue for collaboration,” he said, noting that while cultural ties between Iran and Bosnia are strong, economic engagement remains limited. “Iranian traders have a minimal presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We need to shift this dynamic and prioritize economic partnerships alongside cultural ones.”

Čardaklija underscored Iran’s potential to supply a wide range of Bosnia’s needs, suggesting that new avenues for cooperation must be explored to increase trade volume. He proposed hosting an “Iran Economic Week” in Bosnia, featuring Iranian traders, to foster greater familiarity with each country’s commercial capacities. “Bosnian traders know very little about Iran’s economic potential,” he admitted, adding that establishing an ICCIMA branch in Sarajevo or a trade center in Bosnia could significantly enhance collaboration.

The ambassador also addressed the stalled preferential trade agreement between the two nations. “Though this agreement exists, it has not been fully implemented, with only 10% of its potential utilized,” he lamented. He urged private sectors on both sides to work together to maximize its benefits, noting that 75% of Bosnia’s exports go to EU countries, reflecting the high quality of its goods.

Hassanzadeh welcomed these proposals, affirming ICCIMA’s readiness to explore and implement strategies to elevate trade with Bosnia. “We are prepared to collaborate fully to increase the trade volume between our countries,” he concluded.

The meeting signals a renewed push to transform the Iran-Bosnia relationship from one rooted in cultural affinity to a robust economic partnership. With untapped potential in trade agreements, market access, and mutual investment, both sides appear committed to turning opportunities into action. The proposed trade center and economic week could serve as pivotal steps toward integrating Iranian goods into European supply chains via Bosnia, while opening new markets for Bosnian exports in the Middle East. As discussions progress, the focus remains on practical measures to bridge the gap between ambition and achievement in this bilateral relationship.

Poland tops the world rankings and are also the defending champions, winning their first VNL title last year. Since the inception of the league in 2018, the host nation has finished in the top three on four out of five occasions.

In the preliminary round, the 16 teams are divided into two pools, which are reshuffled for each of the three weekly phases. Each nation will play 12 matches in the pool phase, with all results combined into one ranking table.

The top eight teams will then qualify for the knockout stages in Poland, with the bronze and gold medal matches taking place on 30 June.

World Ranking Points will be awarded or deducted after each match of the preliminary rounds of the competition and this will be important for some of the teams who haven’t qualified for Paris 2024 yet: five additional Olympic quotas will be decided using the FIVB rankings in June 2024.

Speaking to the press after a meeting with the president of the National Assembly of Serbia Vladimir Orlic in Tehran, Nikbakht said: “The presidents of the two countries emphasize increasing trade exchanges between Iran and Serbia.”

The agricultural sector is considered one of the important economic sectors for both countries and transfer of knowledge in this area can have an effective role in development of different fields, he said.

Mentioning Serbia’s developed agriculture sector, the minister said: “Serbia has valuable experiences in various fields like livestock and poultry food, basic products and inputs such as all kinds of vegetable and summer seeds and we can benefit from such experience and we can also meet part of our country’s needs in the field of corn and meat from Serbia.”

“We are also ready to supply a part of Serbia’s agricultural needs according to the production capacity in Iran,” he added.

Iran and Serbia have been taking serious measures for the expansion of economic ties over the past six months.

Earlier this month, Head of the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture (ICCIMA) Hossein Selahvarzi met with Serbia’s Ambassador to Tehran Dragan Todorovic to discuss ways of expanding trade ties between the two countries.

During the meeting, the two sides stressed the need for expanding trade ties by promoting the exchange of trade delegations.

Also, in a meeting between the private sector representatives of Iran and Serbia in Tehran in late May, the two sides discussed ways of expanding mutual economic ties.

In that meeting which was attended by the acting head of the ICCIMA Department of International Affairs Niloufar Asadi and a delegation of Serbian private sector representatives, the two sides stressed the need for promoting joint investment and production in order to increase the level of trade.

According to Asadi, establishing a barter trade mechanism between the two sides can also significantly boost economic relations between the two countries.

The officials also explored common areas for cooperation including agriculture, petrochemicals, tourism, and especially health tourism.

The head of the Serbian delegation for his part expressed his country’s readiness for welcoming Iranian economic delegations in the future, saying: “In addition to cooperation between the science and technology parks of the two countries, we are looking for trade in agricultural products, especially the import of chemical fertilizers from Iran and the export of corn, soybeans, and other products.”

Meanwhile, in a meeting with the former Head of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO) Alireza Peyman-Pak in Belgrade in July 2022, Serbia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Selakovic announced his country’s serious determination to develop economic relations with Iran noting that volume of trade between the two countries has the potential to increase and Serbia supports this issue.

Selakovic referred to the 80-year history of official relations between the two countries and expressed the determination of the president and the government of the Republic of Serbia to expand economic cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Underlining the good political relations between the two countries, he said that the volume of mutual trade has the potential to increase and the Serbian government is ready to take the necessary measures to realize this goal.

Peyman-Pak, for his part, referred to the capacities and capabilities of Iranian companies and explained Iran’s roadmap for the development of economic cooperation with Serbia, and noted that several mechanisms have been considered to realize the increase in the volume of trade between the two countries through the private sectors.

He also emphasized the role of the chambers of commerce of Iran and Serbia in promoting trade relations between the two countries.

Referring to the emerging economy of Serbia, Selahvarzi said: “The ICCIMA is focusing a lot on promoting international activities, and in this regard, countries with economic advantages are given priority; therefore, with the help of the Serbian Embassy, we can take good steps to develop business relations.”

He mentioned the visit of an Iranian trade delegation to Serbia in 2022, saying: “In that visit, solutions were agreed upon in the form of some payment mechanisms and now we should focus more on implementing those mechanisms.”

The ICCIMA head further underlined the advantages of trade relations between Iran and Serbia and continued: “ICCIMA is ready to exchange trade delegations with Serbia and as the first step we will get in touch with the Serbian Chamber of Commerce to make the necessary arrangements for receiving a trade delegation from Serbia.”

Todorovic, for his part, congratulated Selahvarzi on his election as the new head of the ICCIMA and welcomed his proposal regarding the visit of a Serbian trade delegation to Iran, saying: “In October or November this year, the joint economic committee of Iran and Serbia will be held in Tehran, and a business delegation can also be sent to Iran at the same time as this event.”

“Also, in ten days, the speaker of the Serbian Parliament is going to visit Iran, and after two weeks, our Deputy Foreign Minister will also travel to Tehran. Arrangements can also be made for the presence of business delegations during these trips,” he added.
