TEHRAN (Iran News) Brigadier General Reza Shojaei, Commander of the Sistan and Baluchestan Border Guard, said on Friday night that the operation followed intelligence reports indicating movements by terrorist and anti-Iran groups planning to enter Iranian territory.

He noted that the planned infiltration coincided with sensitive occasions, including the birth anniversary of Imam Ali (PBUH) and the martyrdom anniversary of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, with the aim of carrying out terrorist acts and creating insecurity in Iranian cities.

Shojaei stated that border intelligence and operational units were immediately placed on high alert. Late Thursday night, a terrorist team attempting to cross the border engaged Iranian border guards, leading to a heavy exchange of fire. After an intense clash, the assailants suffered significant losses, with several members wounded, and were forced to flee the area, leaving behind weapons and equipment.

Border forces seized a large cache of arms and ammunition, including four Kalashnikov rifles, a handgun, RPG and SPG-9 rounds, grenades, heavy machine-gun ammunition, sniper rounds, and multiple magazines.

The commander stressed that border guards in Sistan and Baluchestan Province remain fully prepared to deal decisively and intelligently with any illegal actions, particularly acts of sabotage and terrorism, and will not allow threats to public order and security.

Saravan County is located approximately 347 kilometers southeast of Zahedan, the provincial capital of Sistan and Baluchestan.

Fazeli, also a member of Iran-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group and head of fraction of Sistan and Baluchistan Province lawmakers in the parliament, pointed in the meeting to the religious, historical and cultural commonalities between the two nations of Iran and Pakistan and expressed satisfaction over the amicable and peaceful ties between the two states.

He then called for bolstering and expanding the interactions and exchanges between the two countries in all spheres especially in the parliamentary and economic relations.

Fazeli then pointed to the opening of the border terminal of Pishin-Mand and called for operationalizing the markets of Kuhak-Panjgur, and stated that Saravan has several villages that consolidate with neighboring Pakistani villages, and the trade between them which dates back to the old times has created closeness between them.
He also reiterated the significance of parliamentary diplomacy for removing hurdles between the two states and called for continuous meetings between the lawmakers of neighboring provinces of Sistan and Baluchistan Province.

Pakistan Ambassador Mr. Qureshi, for his part, pointed to the various co-operations between Iran and Pakistan especially in the parliamentary section, adding that some important steps have been taken for restoring peace and sustainable stability in borders of the two countries, adding that both countries are trying to boost development and livelihood of the border-dwellers by opening border markets like Kuhak Passage.

He then explained the latest situation of Panjgur border markets. He also welcomed Fazel’s suggestion for the continuous meeting between lawmakers of the neighboring border provinces, reiterating that Pakistan Government welcomes any move for boosting economic cooperation between Iran and Pakistan.

Commander of Sistan and Baluchestan Border police Guards Colonel Mohammad Mollashahi said on Monday that some 834 kilograms of narcotics were seized in two separate operations in the province, one in Saravan.

Some 505 kilograms of opium were confiscated last night when the police force entered a gun battle with a gang attempting to smuggle the drugs into the country through the southern border, he said.

According to Mollashahi, the smugglers escaped using the darkness of the night.

Following a series of intelligence operations, 304 kilograms hashish and 30 kilograms opium were seized in another operation, he said.

Three smugglers have been arrested in this regard and handed over to the judicial officials and two vehicles along with a number of different weapons were captured, he added.

Over 20 tons of different illicit drugs were captured in Sistan and Baluchestan province during the past month.

The Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past three decades, despite its high economic and human costs. The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past four decades. The country has spent more than hundreds of millions of dollars on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.
