Turkey S-400 Systems Will Be Operational by Spring

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A number of Turkish media said Wednesday, citing the country’s Minister of Defense Hulusi Akar, that the S-400 systems delivered by Russia to Turkey last year will become fully operational in April or May this year.

“The training of the personnel for the S-400 systems as well as the deployment of the systems are going as it has been planned. They will become operational in April or May,” Hulusi Akar said as quoted by Turkiye news outlets, Sputnik reported.

Russia and Turkey signed a $2.5 billion deal for the delivery of four S-400 batteries in December 2017. The delivery of all components of the S-400 air defense missile systems to Turkey was completed last year.

Turkey, however, has faced objection from the US that says the weapon system is incompatible with NATO security standards. Ankara has insisted that the S-400 systems would not pose a threat for the alliance and resisted US pressure to cancel orders.

Russia, Turkey meets for extra S-400 Missiles

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Russia said Wednesday it had completed the deliveries of S-400 missiles defense systems to Turkey, and the two sides are in talks for a new deal.

Alexander Mikheyev, the head of state-controlled arms trader Rosoboronexport, said the defense systems contract was completed ahead of schedule.

“[We] successfully handled the logistics and delivery. We had 72 flights via air transport. Everything worked out well, without any disruptions,” Mikheyev told Russian news agency Interfax, Daily Sabah reported.

He said Moscow and Ankara are already discussing “the option, financial model, and delivery time.”

“The localization [of the production] program is already at the final stage,” the Rosoboronexport CEO added, without disclosing the details of the S-400 production in Turkey.

Mikheyev also said Russian specialists are currently training Turkish personnel to operate the equipment that has already been delivered. The air defense systems will be activated when the training ends.

Moscow and Ankara finalized an agreement on the delivery of the S-400 missile systems in late 2017. So far, Turkey has received two batteries of the advanced Russian-made systems. The deliveries are set to continue through April 2020.

The S-400 missiles entered service with the Russian army in 2007 and is considered Russia’s most advanced long-range anti-aircraft missile system.

Capable of engaging targets at a distance of 400 kilometers and at an altitude of up to 30 kilometers, the defense systems can destroy aircraft as well as cruise and ballistic missiles. It can also be used against land-based targets.

Russia Deploys S-400 Missiles in Arctic

The surface to air-missile regiment of the Northern Fleet’s air defense forces based on the archipelago’s southern Yuzhny Island has been fully equipped with new S-400 systems, the fleet said, AFP reported.

The regiment was earlier equipped with S-300 systems, a previous version of the missile.

The S-400 is one of the most advanced missile defense systems in the world and can hit enemy targets at up to 400 kilometers.

Over the past few years Russia has significantly upgraded its military infrastructure in the Arctic.

In addition to the Novaya Zemlya forces, the country has stationed troops in the Franz Josef Land, the New Siberian Islands and several other places.

Russia has increasingly asserted itself as an Arctic nation, proclaiming the region as a top priority due to its mineral riches and strategic importance.
