The lawyer of Ruhollah Zam announced on Wednesday that his client has appealed against the death sentence, asking for a review on the court’s verdict.

Zam was sentenced to death in late June after being convicted of Efsad-e Fel-Arz (spreading corruption on earth).

The Judiciary said back then that the verdict was not final and could be appealed.

Amad News was known for disseminating incriminating content against the Islamic Establishment, insulting the sanctities of Iranian Muslims, and publishing fake news in order to drive a wedge between the Iranian people and government.

Iran arrested Zam in 2019 following a complicated intelligence operation by the IRGC’s Intelligence Organization, which involved deceiving intelligence services of some Western countries especially France, under whose guidance and protection Zam was operating.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The spokesman for Iran’s Judiciary praised the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) for busting Ruhollah Zam, the head of an anti-Iranian website and Telegram channel, and said following his arrest “invaluable” information has been obtained.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Tehran on Tuesday, Gholam Hossein Esmaeili expressed his gratitude to the IRGC’s Intelligence Organization for the “precision” operation to arrest the counter-revolutionary figure. Iran News covers the report about the information gained by Zam arrest.

He further rejected claims that some government officials have been arrested due to their possible connection with Zam and said, “So far, no one in the administration, Judiciary, Armed Forces or elsewhere has been arrested…”

He further advised political groups “not to point a finger of blame at each other” for links with Zam, who was the admin of the website “www.amadnews.org” and Telegram channel “Amadnews”.

“Of course, we obtained invaluable information on this issue, but no new arrests have been made since Ruhollah Zam’s arrest,” the spokesman added.

Last week, the IRGC announced in a statement that in a “complicated” operation, it had managed to arrest the administrator of a website “directed and supported by France’s intelligence service”.

The IRGC emphasized that Zam had been running extensive psychological warfare in recent years with direct logistical support of foreign intelligence services and counter-revolutionary agents outside the country in order to sow discord inside Iran, stoke Iranophobia, disseminate lies, foment doubt among the younger generation about religious beliefs, prepare the ground for acts of violence and terror and create chaos and unrest inside the country.

“This evil mercenary element” was busted during a “sophisticated” intelligence operation, according to the IRGC statement.

“Despite being under the guidance of the French intelligence service and the support of the US and Zionist intelligence services…, and being guarded round the clock by various means and covers, he fell into a trap laid by… the IRGC’s Intelligence Organization,” the statement read.

Amadnews was suspended by the messaging app Telegram last year after Iran accused it of carrying calls for violence during protests that started in late 2017 and continued across the country. But the channel soon reappeared under a new name.

Iranian President’s Chief of Staff Mahmoud Vaezi praised the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps’ (IRGC) recent success in arresting Ruhollah Zam, the head of an anti-Iranian website and Telegram channel, saying the IRGC forces have acted wisely.

“In the past, we had stated that the activities and operations of some networks (in cyberspace) have nothing to do with providing information, advertising, or media,” Vaezi told reporters in the northern province of Semnan on Sunday.

“They, including Amadnews, play into the hands of the enemy,” he added, referring to the counter-revolutionary website “www.amadnews.org” and Telegram channel “Amadnews”.

“Today, it became clear to our people, even people from other countries, and officials, that the network was working for the enemy’s (spy) services,” the official said.

The IRGC forces have acted very well and managed to bring someone who had betrayed their people into the country with “a very complicated and wise plan”, Vaezi added.

On Tuesday, the IRGC announced in a statement that in a “complicated” operation, it had managed to arrest the administrator of a website “directed and supported by France’s intelligence service”.

Ruhollah Zam who in recent years had become a tool in the hands of espionage services and anti-Iran bodies and had been publishing false news against the country in a Telegram channel known as ‘Amad News’, was arrested by the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps outside the country and was taken back to Iran, according to an IRGC statement on Monday.

The statement thanked God for “arresting one of the main figures behind the psychological war against the Islamic Republic in a complex operation.”

The statement noted that surprising and arresting this ‘evil and mercenary agent’ shows IRGC’s ‘upper hand’ against intelligence agencies of enemies.

The statement noted that IRGC’s Intelligence Organization has arrested Zam in “a professional, smart and multifaceted operation using modern intelligence methods and innovative techniques to handle and trick foreign [intelligence] services.”

It went on to say that the arrest came as Zam was “under the guidance of France intelligence service and supported by US and Zionist regime’s agencies, being covertly and overtly protected around the clock.”

“This great operation demonstrates the defeat of enemies’ intelligence services,” said the statement, noting that more information about the operation will be soon announced.

Also, the news of Zam’s arrest was immediately published in ‘Amad News’ channel, signaling that it is now under the control of IRGC.
