101 people killed in road accidents during Eid ul-Fitr holidays

TEHRAN (Iran News) –The commander of the Iranian traffic police says 101 people have died across the country during the Eid ul-Fitr holidays over the past few days.

General Teimour Hosseini added that 98 million trips happened during the holidays that began on Tuesday.

The Nowruz road accidents also killed over 800 people countrywide. More than 21,000 people were also wounded.

The Nowruz holiday started on March 14, 2024 and lasted three weeks.

Experts blame the high casualties caused by road crashes on poor infrastructure and reckless driving.

Over 17,000 killed, 330,000 injured in road accidents in Iran in ten months

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Traffic accidents in Iran have claimed the lives of at least 17,000 people and left more than 334,000 people wounded over the past ten months, according to the latest figures released by the Forensic Medicine Organization of Iran.

“In general, during the first ten months of this year, 17,177 people died in Iran due to traffic accidents. Men have a greater share in the number of deaths. Among the deaths this year, 13,569 were men and the rest were women,” according to the report.

The report serves as a reminder for holidaymakers during the Persian New Year, or Nowruz which starts on March 20, when millions of Iranians hit the roads countrywide.

Meanwhile, Abolfazl Moussavipour, the head of Tehran’s traffic police, said the capital city witnessed a 13 percent rise in the number of fatalities on the roads during the said period.

Iran has one of the highest death tolls from road accidents in the world, mainly due to poor road infrastructure and reckless driving.

The data shows that in the period from 2001 to 2013, the number of casualties caused by traffic accidents was on the decline, but the diminishing trend has stopped since then.

Athletes, artists launch campaign to reduce road accidents

TEHRAN – A group of famous Iranian athletes and artists have initiated a campaign titled ‘please_stay_alive’ with the aim of cutting road accidents and fatalities.

A few short clips have been prepared and participants in the campaign shared them on their accounts in social media to raise public awareness about dangers of careless driving, Fars reported on Sunday.

Also, every participant in the campaign is required to invite 3 of their friends and colleagues so that this movement can gain a louder voice and a better impact.

Many Iranians take a trip during the two-week Noruz holidays, starting on March 21, however, considerable number of accidents and fatalities in this period is recorded every year.

Unfortunately, around 250 individuals lost their lives and some 22,000 got injured last year in road accidents during Noruz.
