TEHRAN (Iran News) – ‘Renovation of shipping fleet a necessity for Iranian maritime trade’. The Secretary of the Iranian Merchant Mariners Syndicate (IMMS) Saman Rezaei has said buying new ships and the renovation of the country’s existing maritime fleet is an important necessity for developing the maritime trade.

“Older ships have higher depreciation and maintenance costs and lower safety, so buying new ships and renovating the existing ones is a very important necessity for the country’s maritime sector,” the portal of the Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) quoted Rezaei as saying.

According to the official, an aging fleet will have several disadvantages and challenges including low safety, transportation restrictions, non-compliance with current requirements and standards, and high maintenance costs.

Rezaei has made the remarks referring to the Transport and Urban Development Ministry’s new plan for the development of a roadmap for improving the quality of the maritime transport fleet and the country’s northern and southern ports.

“The equipment of the country’s ports as well as our maritime fleet have been worn out due to sanctions and unfavorable economic conditions, and in recent years we have not been able to buy new ships and renovate the national fleet,” he said.

Noting that in addition to the purchase of new and up-to-date ships, the transfer of technology for the construction of such ships should be a priority as well, he added: “This view is very important and necessary so that we can have better performance in the field of the marine industry and shipbuilding in the future.”

The official further emphasized that specialized manpower is another important issue that should be considered in the maritime field, saying: “Efficient manpower in the maritime and port fields is a very important issue that the country needs due to its high existing capacities.”

Rezaei said that having smart vessels is another issue that the country’s maritime transport sector will need in the very near future, adding that eliminating the backlog in the shipbuilding industry will not be easily compensated and one of the solutions to do so is using new technologies, including the technology of building smart commercial vessels.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – As the registration for the upcoming presidential elections closed on Saturday, the Tehran Times has decided to provide the respectful readers with brief introductions of prominent presidential candidates. This series of introduction will continue tomorrow.

Seyed Ebrahim Raeisi

Currently serving as the head of the Judiciary, Iran’s chief justice was born in 1960. He is considered a principlist politician. Raeisi has served in various positions in the judicial system, such as deputy chief justice from 2004 to 2014, and attorney general from 2014 to 2016.

He is also a member of the Assembly of Experts tasked to elect and monitor the performance of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution. He was elected to the assembly for the first time in the 2006 election from South Khorasan province.

Raeisi is one of the politicians who is subject to the U.S and the European Union sanctions. He was blacklisted in November 2019.

He has stated that he is seeking to establish a “strong Iran” if elected president in the June 18 polls.

Gaining a reputation for countering the corrupt and the embezzlers in the Judiciary, he said that he is in the race to “dry the corrupt substrates from the root and turn inefficiencies into efficiencies.”

Raeisi considers himself “part the people, with the people and by the people,” and believes that with the help of the people, he can overcome the problems.

Ali Larijani

Ali Larijani, the former Parliament speaker, was born in 1957. He has served in various positions during his political career. From being the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Broadcasting (IRIB) to being the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and chief nuclear negotiator in that position.

He is the longest-serving parliament speaker. He headed the parliament for three consecutive terms

He ran unsuccessfully in the 2005 elections, winning only 6% of votes.

He is referred to as a “center-right politician who has gradually distanced himself from the principlist camp” and a “conservative-turned-moderate.”

Larijani believes that the main goal of the foreign policy should be to facilitate foreign relations for the economic development of the country.

“The experience of countries that have experienced economic leaps over the last 20 years shows that their foreign policy and economy have pursued the same goal and foreign policy has served the development of the country,” Larijani said in a press conference on Saturday after registering to run for the presidential post.

He said that he is looking to unfreeze the blocked Iranian assets in banks worldwide as soon as possible.

“Good governance depends on less rhetoric and more effective rationality,” the philosopher-turned politician believes.

Mohsen Rezaei

Major General Mohsen Rezaei was born in 1954. He led the Islamic Revolution Guards Corp for 17 years, from 1980 to 1997. He has received the first grade Order of Fath by the Commander-in-Chief three times, holding a record among military officials.

Rezaei ran for president twice in 2009 and 2013, losing to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hassan Rouhani respectively.

Stating that today is not a day to promise but a day to act, he believes that Iran needs a new path.

“We are ready to bring happiness back to Iranian families,” he said at the press conference held after registering at the Ministry of Interior on Saturday to run for president.

The former IRGC chief said if he succeeds to win the presidency, his administration will be seeking to bring back economic stability.

“I’m not here to cover up the truth. We will tell everything to the people honestly,” he claimed.

Stating that he has come to “shield” people against difficulties and not to use the people as shields, Rezaei said that he has plans to bring welfare for the people.

“We will initiate a structural change in the administration of the country,” he promised.

Addressing a meeting of IRGC personnel in Tehran on Monday, Rezaei said Tel Aviv would be razed to the ground if the Israeli regime took any military action against the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s response will be such that Benjamin Netanyahu would not have the time to escape, Rezaei added.

He was responding to the latest anti-Iran comments by the Israeli prime minister at the Munich Security Conference, during which Netanyahu displayed a wreckage of what he alleged to be an Iranian drone and said, “We will act if necessary not just against Iran’s proxies but against Iran itself.”

In comments last week, lieutenant commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps warned the Israeli regime of a hell that Iran could create for Zionists, recommending Israel to abandon the dream of conquering lands from “the river to the sea”, a term Israel uses to refer to territories from the River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea.

TEHRAN – Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei warned against the US government’s attempts to undermine the 2015 international nuclear deal, saying that Iran would withdraw from the deal if Washington insists on making it ineffectual.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Wednesday, Rezaei said the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear agreement between Tehran and six world powers, is credible to the Iranian nation as long as it benefits the country.

If the agreement is only supposed to ban Iran’s nuclear activities, then it will be annulled by default, the official stressed.

The US is seeking to render the JCPOA dead, he said, adding that it is exerting pressures to impede European countries’ cooperation with Iran.

In that case, the Iranian nation and government will withdraw from the agreement, the secretary of the Expediency Council stressed.

After months of anticipation, Trump on Friday said his administration “cannot and will not” certify Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA to Congress, as he set out a new strategy for dealing with Iran.

He also said that his new strategy begins with imposing tough sanctions on the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), accusing Iran of “proliferation of missiles and weapons that threaten its neighbor’s global trade and freedom of navigation.”

In a televised address to the nation later in the day, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani blasted the comments by Trump, reiterating that the Iranian nation will not surrender to such “false statements and hate speech.”

Speaking at a press conference with Iraqi media on Sunday evening, Iran’s Rezaei said several countries in the region and the world as well as the United Nations (UN) are opposed to the referendum and division of Iraq and are urging Kurdish leaders to dismiss the petition.

“Iraq is a well-known nation and a member of the United Nations with international borders, and its breakdown is therefore a huge mistake since the measure would mark the onset of dangerous insecurities inside the region,” he added.

He described consequences of Iraq’s disintegration on regional countries as menacing given that breakup of Iraq will be extended to Syria and Turkey the following separatist war might lead to 20 years of insecurity and conflict.

“Islamic Republic of Iran, Turkey, Syria, and Iraq are all opposed the plan for the same reason,” said Rezaei adding that any change in geography of the region would have serious consequences.

He warned against formation of new wars in the region between the central government of Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan as a result of a possible division saying “in that case, the Iraqi Kurdistan nation will suffer damages and unrest will spread throughout the region.”

Rezaei also gave warning on arrival of the Turkish army in northern Iraq in case the Iraqi Kurdistan is separated; “unfortunately, the issue of the referendum in the Iraqi Kurdistan is more of a personal issue than a popular demand as many Kurdish leaders are against it.”

He continued that some Kurdish leaders sought name and fame through the referendum at a time when the Iraqi Kurdistan is in dire need of security and progress.

Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council went on to state that refusal of the United Nations and European countries to monitor the referendum on the autonomous region marked the greatest failure for the process and emphasized that if the Kurdish leaders in Iraq continue to insist on referendum, it would either because of personal interests or hidden hands behind the scene which will certainly be revealed in the future.

Mohsen Rezaei said reaching of army and security forces of Iraq and Syria to legal borders of their countries marks an outstanding achievement over the past four years; “the move is a sign that security has been established in the two countries.”

He stressed that Iran’s presence in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and other countries has been made at request of their governments and is aimed at strengthening security in these countries.

On US policies in the region, Rezaei emphasized that Americans are not after establishment of security in Iraq and Syria as evidenced by their opposition to any action leading to lasting security in the two countries.

The senior Iranian official later noted that concentration of ISIL terrorist elements in one part of Syria is to the detriment of the terrorist group; “military operation of the Syrian Army is currently underway in Deir ez-Zor and terrorists will be soon fully eliminated in the coming months.”

He recalled that Americans were involved in the recent controversy over transfer of ISIL members to Deir ez-Zor since they are against uprooting of terrorists.

“Zionist and American policies to create hostility between Arabs and the Islamic Republic of Iran have failed,” emphasized Rezaei adding “Tehran has thwarted all similar plans by the Zionists and Americans.”

He acknowledged that release of Mosul and Tal Afar was a result of cooperation between Sunni and Shia Iraqis saying “presence of both Shia and Sunni figures in the army and among Hashad al-Shabi militias has contributed to recent victories over terrorism in Iraq.”

The Islamic Republic of Iran would never allow the Zionist regime, as the chief enemy of Islam, to hide behind the Shia-Sunni conflict or the hostility of Arabs and Iran, he underscored.

He referred to formation of Resistance Front in Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon as a highly significant move expressing hope that Saudi Arabia will also join the Front in the future in opposition to the Zionist regime.

Rezaei stressed that the four countries of Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon were friend states and the only countries that were honestly fighting against terrorism.

“Differences between these countries on the regional issues remained at a minimum level and could be easily resolved,” reminded the official asserting that the four countries could set up a union in the future to create peace, security and progress in the region.

The Secretary of State Recognized the regime from the Islamic and Arab countries of the region to invite him to the collection and said: “If a union is formed from Islamic countries, this union can take into account the resources of oil, gas and mines in the region. It can be even stronger than the European Union.

He described US policy over the past 14 years in failed Iraq, saying that the fate of the Tramp government policy in the Persian Gulf will also be defeated because America is currently experiencing its weakest conditions.

Iran’s Expediency Council Secretary invited Islamic and Arab countries of the region to join the union and said the union can turn to be even stronger than the European Union thank to massive resources of oil, gas and mines in the region

He said US policy had failed in Iraq over the past 14 years commenting that policies pursued by Tramp government in the Persian Gulf are bound to be defeated because America is currently experiencing its weakest conditions.

He congratulated the great victories gained by armed forces and Hashad al-Shabi of Iraq in the face of terrorism adding “the Iraqi government and nation are independent today and are in no need for intervention of any outsider.”

Mohsen Rezaei reminded that the Islamic Republic of Iran would remain on the side of Iraqis both in the fight against terrorism and for reconstruction the neighboring country.

He emphasized that the policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran was to preserve territorial integrity of countries and to prevent changes in international borders.

We firmly believe that the Israeli regime must be eliminated, Palestine be liberated and that war and divisions will reach an end in the Islamic world.

Mohsen Rezaei, along with other members of the Expediency Council, has been on a pilgrimage visit to the neighboring country of Iraq.
