TEHRAN (Iran News) – Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab has announced the resignation of his government following a similar move by several ministers, and amid angry protests in the country that followed the devastating blast of August 4 in the Beirut port.

Speaking to people in a live televised address on Monday, Diab first blamed the explosion on mismanagement resulting from “endemic corruption” in the country, Press TV reported.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Diab slammed certain corrupt political actors for undermining his government’s efforts by distorting the truth.

“Today we follow the will of the people in their demand to hold accountable those responsible for the disaster that has been in hiding for seven years, and their desire for real change,” Diab said, adding, “In the face of this reality … I am announcing today the resignation of this government.

“May God saves Lebanon, may God save Lebanon, may God save Lebanon.”

He said his government “tried to create change to meet the demands of the Lebanese people, adding, “We are with the people in calling for trying those responsible for this crime.”

Diab also denounced those who are trying to take advantage of the Beirut blast for their own political gain.

After months of a power vacuum in the small Mediterranean country, Diab’s cabinet formed in January to combat alleged corruption and mismanagement, and to revive Lebanon’s collapsed economy.

Before Diab announced the government’s resignation, four cabinet ministers had already quit their posts.

The tragic explosion caused by the detonation of more than 2,000 tons of ammonium nitrate in a port warehouse has so far killed more than 200 citizens and injured more than 6000 others.

The explosion is believed to have been caused by a fire that ignited a 2,750-ton stockpile of highly volatile ammonium nitrate. The material had been stored at the port since 2013 with few safeguards despite numerous warnings of the danger, Al-Jazeera reported.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resigned from his ministerial posts as required by the indictment against him, he announced on Wednesday.

Netanyahu has held the health, welfare, agriculture, and diaspora affairs portfolios, but someone who has been indicted for a crime cannot serve as a minister. There is no such rule regarding the position of the prime minister, Haaretz reported.

Netanyahu stated that he would appoint a replacement for his ministerial posts in the coming days.

Also Wednesday, Netanyahu, facing criminal charges in three corruption cases, said that he had decided to officially request immunity from prosecution.

Court proceedings in Netanyahu’s cases will only begin after the Knesset completes its handling of the immunity request – and the expected appeals to the High Court on the matter.

According to Israeli law, the Knesset House Committee is to discuss his request and should it be approved, the request will need to pass a vote by the Knesset plenum.

However, since a House Committee has not been appointed since the April general election, and is not expected to be assembled before the upcoming March election, the discussion will only take place in several months. Until the committee makes a decision, an indictment against Netanyahu can’t be handed officially to the court.

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Ali Rabiee denied any plans for Rouhani to resign, saying such an idea has been by no means raised in the administration.

He added that First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri is also opposed to such an idea.

On an upcoming presidential visit to Japan, Rabiee underlined that Rouhani’s trip to Tokyo has nothing to do with the US’ push for talks with Iran.

He added that the “Japanese friends” sometimes put forward proposals occasionally, but reiterated that the Islamic Republic has no plans in this regard.

Last week, the Iranian president’s chief of staff dismissed speculation that Rouhani might discuss a message from the US government in his upcoming trip to Japan, saying, “The (presidential) trip will be made within the framework of bilateral visits and meetings between the officials of Tehran and Tokyo.”

The Iranian president will be visiting Malaysia before traveling to Japan at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.

Abe visited Tehran in June to become the first Japanese leader to travel to Iran in more than four decades.

The Japanese prime minister met with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and the Iranian president.

May’s departure will deepen the Brexit crisis as a new leader is likely to want a more decisive split, raising the chances of a confrontation with the European Union and a potentially unpredictable snap parliamentary election, Reuters reported.

May set out a timetable for her departure – she will resign as Conservative Party leader on June 7 with a leadership contest beginning the following week.

Her voice cracking with emotion, May, who endured crises and humiliation in her failed effort to find a compromise Brexit deal that parliament could ratify, said she bore no ill will.

“I will shortly leave the job that has been the honor of my life to hold,” May said. “The second female prime minister, but certainly not the last.”

“I do so with no ill will but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love,” May said, with her husband, Philip, looking on.

May, once a reluctant supporter of EU membership, who won the top job in the turmoil that followed the 2016 Brexit vote, steps down with her central pledges – to lead the United Kingdom out of the bloc and heal its divisions – unfulfilled.

“It is, and will always remain, a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit,” May said, adding that her successor would have to find a consensus to honor the 2016 referendum result.

PM Boris Johnson?

May bequeaths a deeply divided country and a political elite that is deadlocked over how, when or whether to leave the EU.

The leading contenders to succeed May all want a tougher divorce deal, although the EU has said it will not renegotiate the Withdrawal Treaty it sealed in November.
Sterling reversed initial gains it made on May’s resignation.

Boris Johnson, the face of the official Brexit campaign in 2016, is the favorite to succeed May. Betting markets put a 40% implied probability on Johnson winning the top job.

Others tipped by betting markets are Dominic Raab, a Brexit supporter and former Brexit secretary, with a 14% implied probability on his chances.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove, former House of Commons leader Andrea Leadsom and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt each have a 7% probability, according to betting markets.

Defense Secretary Penny Mordaunt and International Development Secretary Rory Stewart each have a 4% chance of the top job while Home Secretary (interior minister) Sajid Javid has

In comments on Tuesday morning, rapporteur of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said a group of lawmakers have sent a letter to President Hassan Rouhani to voice support for Foreign Minister Zarif.

The letter, signed by 150 parliamentarians, has asked the president to turn down Zarif’s resignation and encourage him to remain in his post.

Last night, Foreign Minister Zarif announced his resignation from the cabinet in a post on his Instagram account.

“Many thanks for the generosity of the dear and brave people of Iran and its authorities over the past 67 months. I sincerely apologize for the inability to continue serving and for all the shortcomings during my service. Be happy and worthy,” Zarif wrote on his Instagram page on Monday night.

Meanwhile, the Iranian president’s chief of staff, Mahmoud Vaezi, has rejected media reports that the president has accepted Zarif’s resignation.

“The reports that the president has accepted Dr. Zarif’s resignation are strongly rejected,” Vaezi said in a post on his Twitter account.

Also, Chairman of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Heshmatollah Falahat Pishe told the Tasnim News Agency, “We are still unaware whether or not the president has accepted Mr. Zarif’s resignation.”
