Non-Aligned Movement underlines need for dialogue and de-escalation in ME

TEHRAN (Iran News) The members of the NAM expressed their deep concern regarding the escalation of tensions and the increase in threatening rhetoric in the region, particularly the threat to use force against Iran.

The full text of the statement is as follows:

1. The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) expresses its deep concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East and the growing use of threatening rhetoric in international relations, particularly threats involving the use of force against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

2. The Movement also rejects the politicization of the fight against terrorism including through the unilateral preparation of lists accusing States and their constitutionally-established institutions of allegedly supporting terrorism.

3. While firmly condemning such pronouncements and conducts, which threaten regional peace and stability and clearly violate the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, the Movement reiterates the need for full respect for the sovereignty, sovereign equality, and territorial integrity of States, as well as the strict obligation of non‑interference in their internal affairs, and emphasizes that all disputes must be resolved through peaceful means in accordance with the UN Charter.

4. The Movement voices grave concerns that any military escalation would carry far-reaching and unpredictable consequences for regional and international peace and security, global economic stability, and energy security, with especially grave effects on developing countries through disruptions to the realization of the right to development.

5. In this regard, the Movement welcomes the resumption of talks between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, and commends the efforts of regional States—particularly the Sultanate of Oman, as host—for facilitating diplomatic solutions and dialogue. “Middle East”

6. Accordingly, the Movement stresses the urgent need to strengthen mutual trust and confidence and calls on all parties to pursue diplomacy as the only viable path to de-escalation. The Movement further urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to refrain from any action—including provocative military deployments or posturing beyond national territory—that could further inflame tensions and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Americans have caused many wars and conflicts, leading the region to insecurity and instability during the past years, he told ‘Tehran Dialogue Forum; 23rd Persian Gulf International Conference’ on Tuesday in Tehran.

Lack of a comprehensive framework to solve regional issues is among other causes of insecurity in the region, he said, adding “We needed a comprehensive plan that would include all the regional players.”

“You cannot see that all countries are selling their oil while you are unable to do so. This is not acceptable that other countries try to remove you from the market; so we needed a plan to involve all countries in providing the region with peace and security and the Iranian President’s initiative was proposed in this regard.”

He went on to say that the HOPE initiative includes Iran, the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council, and even Yemen so as to create an assembly that would decide for the region’s security. “All members should accept some principles and adopt some trust-building measures.”

Non-aggression pact, respecting international borders, good neighborliness, and denying the use of force are among the main principles of Iran’s initiative, he said, stressing that the plan can ensure the security of waterways.

“The Persian Gulf region is in a sensitive condition and there are immediate risks; the need for diplomacy and dialogue is being felt in this region,” he said.

Tehran Dialogue Forum, which will run through Wednesday, Jan. 8, aims at reviewing the latest developments in the Persian Gulf region and evaluating regional cooperation plans, including the Iranian-proposed peace initiative dubbed ‘Hormuz Peace Endeavor’ (HOPE).

In a statement on Saturday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi reacted to the report of the formation of the US-led Persian Gulf coalition.

“History shows that American coalitions have been nothing but misnomers, which have not only created no security so far but resulted in further insecurity and instability in different parts of the world,” he added.

The spokesman also said the US needs to misuse the names of other countries to legitimize its unilateral measures, adding, “The US measure in hiding its objectives and dreams behind the names of a few other countries signifies weakness and lack of international legitimacy.”

Mousavi further called on regional countries to rely on their own capacities and those of neighbors to ensure sustainable and inclusive security across the region.

“As the country with the longest coastline on the Persian Gulf, the Islamic Republic of Iran will vigorously keep protecting its economic and security interests, including the navigation security and safety in the body of water,” the spokesperson concluded.

In July 2019, the US announced plans to mobilize an international maritime force to “protect shipping routes” in the Persian Gulf, meaning US-led Persian Gulf coalition. The Pentagon said the mission would be “to increase surveillance of and security in key waterways in the Middle East to ensure freedom of navigation” in the Persian Gulf.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei warned Wednesday that the United States and Western spy services, funded by certain reactionary countries of the region, have been fomenting turmoil and insecurity in Gulf region, calling for vigilance against such enemy plots.

The Leader made the remarks at the graduation ceremony of Iran’s Army cadets at Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Academy in Tehran on Wednesday.Ayatollah Khamenei described insecurity as “the biggest damage” a country could suffer, warning against plots being pursued by the enemies to rob Gulf region of security.

The elements instigating such “dangerous hostilities” are known, he said, adding that “the US and the Western intelligence services, financed by certain reactionary countries of the region, are behind such incidents.”

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in reference to the latest bout of violent protests that have gripped Iraq and Lebanon for several weeks.

The Leader said the Iraqi and Lebanese nations need to remain vigilant and realize that the enemies in fact intend to disrupt their domestic legal structures and create a vacuum in those states, advising people in both countries to follow up on their legitimate demands through legal channels.

“The people of Iraq and Lebanon have some demands that are rightful, but they should know these demands can only be realized within the legal frameworks,” he said in remarks aired on state television.

“The enemy wants to disrupt the legal framework. When in a country there is no legal framework and a vacuum is created, no positive action can be taken,” he added.

“The top priority for them is to overcome insecurity,” Ayatollah Khamenei said, in an address to those who are concerned for the well-being of the people of Iraq and Lebanon.

“The biggest damage that enemies can inflict on a country is to deprive that country of security.”

The Leader recalled that Iran had been the target of similar conspiracies in the past, but that the country managed to thwart those plots thanks to the people’s vigilance and the preparedness of its Armed Forces.

Ayatollah Khamenei further advised the Iranian people and Armed Forces against putting their trust in the enemy, and asked them to constantly monitor all the enemy’s moves.

The Armed Forces should also be careful about the serious threat of “sedition” and stand prepared to confront it, he added.
