TEHRAN (Iran News) – Raisi vows to reform administrative system. President-elect Ebrahim Raeisi said on Friday that doing reforms in the administrative system, creating jobs and controlling Coronavirus pandemic will be among his top priorities after taking office in less than two months.

“What has preoccupied my mind more than everything is the issue of employment. The issue of coronavirus that the people are grappling with has also preoccupied my mind,” Raeisi said in his first televised interview speaking from the holy city of Mashhad on Friday, according to Press TV.

He noted that his administration would also focus on increasing the availability of housing for the public as pledged during his presidential campaigns.

However, he said, people are aware that some measures would take time and emphasized that his administration would make utmost efforts to solve problems as soon as possible.

During his presidential campaigns Raisi said if the country’s economic capacities are activated it is possible to create one million jobs every year.

A member of the Raisi campaign office had also said a plan has been devised to build four million housing units within four years.

In his Friday interview, Raisi also called for national unity to overcome the problems the country is struggling with.

Raisi, the incumbent Judiciary chief, was elected the eighth president after he garnered about 62 percent of the votes in the June 18 election. He will succeed President Hassan Rouhani, who has served two four-year terms in office.

Many world leaders, senior foreign officials, prominent figures, and regional resistance leaders have so far offered congratulations on the Raisi victory.

The newest greetings came from South African and Austrian presidents.

The message of greeting by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was announced by the Iranian ambassador to Pretoria.

In his message of congratulation, Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen also pointed to seven centuries of friendly relations between Austria and Iran, saying, “I am willing to give assurances to Your Excellency that Austria will keep advancing political, economic, cultural and scientific relations (with Iran) in the future.”

Raeisi will assume office on August 3 after being sworn in.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A report on the website of the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA) said that that the World Bank would consider progress made by Iran in carrying out economic reforms in its 2021 version of Doing Business, a report which ranks countries based on the level of attractiveness for business investment, Press TV reported.

The ICCIMA report said World Bank officials attended a recent videoconference in which private sector representatives from across Iran had verified a series of reforms carried out by the Iranian government in recent years.

It said, however, that the Washington-based group had only approved reforms carried out on one economic indicator from a total of eight verified by the chamber and its regional branches.

“The World Bank… accepted to include one item out of eight reform measures in its 2021 (Doing Business) report and the rest… were either rejected or were accepted to be included in reports of the upcoming two years,” said the ICCIMA.

Iran has been critical of the World Bank and its way of examining Iran’s efforts to carry out economic reforms. Government officials and businesses have regretted that the international group and its annual reports have dampened foreign investment in Iran by ignoring genuine reforms carried out in the country.

Doing Business reports came under a fresh spotlight in August when the World Bank decided to halt their publication until issues around data collection irregularities used in compiling the reports were cleared.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said on Saturday that political parties had “made mistakes” in their running of the country, promising electoral reform and other measures as he sought to bring an end to protests.

“Political forces and parties are important institutions in any democratic system, and they have made great sacrifices, but they have also made many mistakes,” Abdul Mahdi said in a statement, Reuters reported. The reform of mistakes was the core of his speech.

He made his remarks as security forces were trying to push protesters back from several major bridges in Baghdad that had been occupied for days. At least 34 people were injured as security forces launched tear gas and stun grenades to try to disperse protesters still grouped near the bridges.

On Friday, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq’s senior Shia Muslim cleric, urged the country’s ruling elite to seek a peaceful way out of the crisis in which at least 280 people have died.

The prime minister appeared to strike a more conciliatory tone toward protesters, who have demanded that he step down, saying that protests are a legitimate engine of political change. At the same time he urged demonstrators not to interrupt “normal life” in the country that has been hit economically by weeks of unrest.

Tens of thousands of people have protested across the country since Oct 1. Demonstrators are demanding an overhaul of the political system and criticizing corruption in the ruling class that has dominated the country since the US-led overthrow of former dictator Saddam Hussein in the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

“The protests have helped and will help pressure political groups, the government … to reform mistakes and accept change. However, continuing protests must allow for a return to normal life, which will lead to legitimate demands being met,” Abdul Mahdi said.

The protests began in Baghdad and quickly spread to the country’s southern provinces.

Abdul Mahdi also promised a ban on possession of weapons by non-state groups that have been accused of shooting demonstrators and investigations into protester deaths.

The prime minister, who announced a spate of reforms during the first wave of protests last month, added that new electoral reforms would be announced in the “coming few days”.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said he is not sure Russia will sign the US-initiated declaration on UN reforming.

“I am not sure we will sign this declaration,” he told journalists when asked by TASS about attitudes to this document, support of which is required to take part in a US President Donald Trump-chaired forum that is to be held in New York on September 18.

“Many of the declaration’s ideas are of major importance and echo initiatives put forth by the secretary general but a declaration is not enough to reform the United Nations,” he said, adding that UN’s efficiency could be boosted only through intergovernmental talks.
