In a statement on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi described the elections as a significant stage in the domestic developments of Armenia.

He also expressed hope that Iran and Armenia could increasingly strengthen their mutual relations following the public participation of Armenians in their country’s general elections and the subsequent formation of the new government there, according to the Foreign Ministry’s website.

Establishing ties with all neighboring states has a very significant and decisive position in Iran’s foreign policy and for peace, stability, prosperity and security of all regional states, Qassemi said.

“Geographical proximity has created deep cultural and historical bonds between Iran and all its neighbors,” the spokesman noted, adding that Tehran highly values these common roots and bonds.

Armenia held parliamentary elections on Sunday.

Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s bloc, My Step, won 70.15% of the vote, the Central Election Commission said after counting ballots from 800 out of 2,010 polling stations.
