FM Spokesman Ghasemi has condemned a politically-motivated US court default judgement requiring Iran to pay compensations to victims of September 11, 2001 attacks in absence of any evidence of Iranian involvement.

In a statement on Sunday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi forwarded Iran’s strong protests against the issuing of such politically-motivated judgments based on unfounded accusations already raised in the past.

A judge in the US has issued a default judgement requiring Iran to pay more than $6 billion to victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The order comes in absence of any evidence of Iran’s involvement, as well as any chance given to the country to contest the case in court. Meanwhile, with 15 of the 19 hijackers of Saudi nationality, Saudi Arabia remains the main target of US citizens looking for damages in relation to the attacks.

“The court order is unacceptable and rejected,” Ghasemi said. “Not only is it a mockery of the international law system but it is also a mockery at the expense of American people, particularly the victims and the bereaved families of the September 11 attacks.”

Ghasemi went on to add, “the devisers of such political games have been making futile attempts to distort the process of prosecution and its outcome in a fictitious way and by reversing the facts.”

“They are trying to rewrite history by actions that are even against the process inside the United States and the main culprits of this terrorist attack, but they will definitely fail to achieve their objectives,” he said.

The Iranian diplomat deemed such court orders an explicit violation of the rules and procedures accepted by international law, which are based on the necessity of observing the immunity of sovereign governments.

“The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves all rights to oppose this illegal procedure,” he stressed.

In a Wednesday statement, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi rejected Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita’s accusations as “incorrect and unfounded.”

Ghasemi said “as in the contacts between the two countries’ authorities in recent days, Iranian authorities have rejected those allegations as unfounded and incorrect, I would like to clearly stress once again that one of the most important principles of foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards other countries and states in the world is a deep respect for their sovereignty and security and non-interference in the internal affairs of others.”

Morocco’s foreign affairs minister, Nasser Bourita, claimed on Tuesday that Rabat had evidence showing Iranian government had provided financial as well as logistical support to Polisario through its embassy in Algiers.

Bahram Ghasemi made the remarks in response to an article published in Iranian newspaper ‘Jomhouri-e Eslami’ on April 4, which had called for changing Iran’s approach towards Lebanon due to some Lebanese politicians’ actions in getting closer to Saudi Arabia despite Iran’s continuous support for them.

Bahram Ghasemi said that the contents of that article are in contradiction with Islamic Republic of Iran’s stance and have nothing to do with Iran’s position in Lebanon which has always supported unity among Lebanese during the past four decades since the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently supported unity, stability and security in Lebanon and does not hesitate to try to maintain and strengthen the unity among the Lebanese people and political groups, adding that Iran has always stressed unity and solidarity among Lebanese in all its meetings and meetings with the Lebanese official.

Ghasemi went on to say that Iran believes that the Republic of Lebanon has become a model of peaceful coexistence among various religions including Muslims and Christians, adding that strengthening Lebanon’s solidarity is the duty of all including the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Foreign ministry spokesman described respecting national sovereignty of all countries, including brother and friend country of Lebanon as well as respecting its political figures as one of the pillars of the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran’s FM spokesman said Austrian government has been urged to pay closer attention to the protection of Iranian diplomatic sites in that country following the Sun. assault outside Iran envoy’s Vienna residence.

Bahram Ghasemi said the knife attacker who injured a guard outside Iranian ambassador’s residence in Vienna on Sunday night was reportedly a 26-year-old Austrian national, whose identity and motive for the attack are as of yet unknown.

“We are in contact with Austrian authorities in Tehran and Vienna, and hope that the Austrian police and security officials will soon reach a conclusion on the investigations that they opened on the case since last night,” Ghasemi said, hoping that future reports would reveal more detailed information on the identity of the attacker and his motive.

He noted his contact with the Iranian ambassador to Vienna, adding “no damage has been done to the residence of the Iranian envoy, but reports indicate that the soldier standing guard at the residential area has been injured and is now receiving treatment in hospital.”

Ghasemi also referred to some speculations that the assailant, who was shot dead “on the spot”, was a foreigner with an Austrian nationality, saying “we have called on the Austrian government to follow up on the case as soon as possible and pay closer attention to the safety of Iran’s diplomatic missions in this country.”
