Iran to Issue Final Statement on Ukrainian Jet Soon

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Transport and Urban Development Minister Mohammad Eslami said the country will soon issue a final statement on a Ukrainian jet that crashed near Tehran in January.

“Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization will soon issue a final statement (on the downed Ukrainian jet) in the presence of a delegation from Ukraine,” Eslami said on Sunday.

He added that Tehran is coordinating everything with Ukraine.

Iranian and Ukrainian delegations held the first round of talks on compensation for the downed jet in Kyiv on August 1, with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba calling them as “constructive”.

The Kyiv-bound UIA Boeing 737 crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran on January 8, killing all 176 people on board, mostly Iranian and Canadian citizens.

Iran said the plane was hit by an anti-aircraft missile due to human error.

Iran, Ukraine To Hold Talks on October in Tehran

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Ambassador to Ukraine announced that the second round of talks between Iran and Ukraine over the issue of the Ukrainian aircraft’s crash will be held in October 2020 in Tehran.

Manouchehr Moradi wrote in his tweeter account that the first round of talks between Iran and Ukraine over the issue of the Ukrainian PS752 aircraft held on July 30 and 31 during the visit of Iranian officials to Kyiv, and ended with the participation of Canada, Britain, and Sweden.

“The negotiations were constructive and fruitful and the second round of talks will be held in October 2020 in Tehran”, he announced.

Last week, Deputy Foreign Minister for International and Legal Affairs Mohsen Baharvand, during his visit to Kyiv, represented Iran in the first round of talks between Tehran and Kyiv.

The Tehran-Kyiv flight was unintentionally shot down by an Iranian air defense unit shortly after taking off from Tehran on January 8, killing all 176 passengers and crew members on board.

The Iranian operator had mistaken the Boeing jetliner for a cruise missile.

The incident came as Iranian air defenses were at the highest level of alert following the country’s missile attacks against US bases in Iraq, which came in retaliation for Washington’s assassination of senior Iranian commander Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani.

Ukraine: Iranian Delegation to Discuss Plane Crash Compensation

TEHRAN (Iran News) – An Iranian delegation will visit Ukraine on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss compensation for a Ukrainian plane that crashed near Tehran in January, the Ukrainian foreign minister said.

“Given the circumstance of what happened, there are all reasons to ask from Iran to pay the highest price for what it did,” Dmytro Kuleba told a news conference during a visit to the Polish capital Warsaw on Monday, Reuters reported.

Kuleba said Ukraine would represent all countries and groups affected during the talks.

“I cannot disclose the final numbers of compensation … numbers will be the result of the consultations,” he said.

Ukrainian delegation meets Shamkhani shot plane

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A high ranking Ukrainian delegation held talks with Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council in Tehran, discussing the issues surrounding the Ukrainian passenger plane which was mistakenly downed by the Iranian military near Tehran on January 8.

Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), headed the Ukrainian delegation for discussing the situation around passenger plane downed a month ago with Iran’s Shamkhani.

The Ukrainian passenger plane, with 176 people aboard, was mistaken for an invading missile. The tragic incident happened a few hours after Iran fired missiles at a U.S. air base in Iraq in retaliation for the January 3 assassination of General Qassem Soleimani. Following the retaliation attack, the Iranian military had been put on high alert.

The victims of the crash included 82 Iranians, 63 Iranian-Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans, and three British nationals.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko met on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) on Saturday and discussed the incident.

IRNA reported on Saturday that the top officials exchanged views on cooperation in investigating the incident.

On Friday, Zarif also met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

According to the website of Canada’s Foreign Ministry, the two agreed to remain in close touch over the issue of the plane crash.

“The two also discussed the download and analysis of PS752’s black boxes. Minister Champagne reiterated that the preferred option of the International Coordination and Response Group is for Iran to make use of the facilities offered by France, which possesses the technical capacity to perform this work. Minister Champagne also stressed the importance of a fair and equitable compensation settlement for the families of the victims, based on international standards,” the website reported.
