TEHRAN (Iran News) – Gold prices climbed to its highest level in nearly eight years on Wednesday, as demand for the safe-haven asset was boosted by worries over a surge in coronavirus infections and hopes of more stimulus measures to combat the economic blow.

Spot gold was up 0.2 percent at $1,769.76 per ounce as of 0234 GMT after touching $1,773, its highest level since October 2012 in early Asian trade, Reuters reported.

US gold futures rose 0.2 percent to $1,785.80.

“The fears of second wave coronavirus cases particularly in the US, and also in Latin America is driving concerns about sustained weakness in the economic recovery and that’s certainly supporting safe-haven assets like gold,” said ANZ analyst Daniel Hynes.

“Continued support that central banks are likely to provide to the market with bond purchasing programs and monetary easing will clearly keep the rates low for the foreseeable future.”

Central banks across the globe have taken aggressive stimulus measures and kept interest rates low helping gold prices surge more than 16 percent this year, as the precious metal is widely viewed as a hedge against inflation and currency debasement.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the next stimulus bill will focus on getting people back to work quickly and that he would consider a further delay of the tax filing deadline.

Several US states reported record infections and the death toll in Latin America passed 100,000 on Tuesday, according to a Reuters tally.

The New York Times reported the European Union is prepared to bar US travelers because of the surge of cases in the country, putting it in the same category as Brazil and Russia.

Also helping gold’s appeal, the dollar index hovered near a more than one-week low.

Elsewhere, palladium edged up 0.1 percent to $1,926.06 per ounce, platinum dropped 0.4 percent to $825.59 and silver fell 0.4 percent to $17.89.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s daily consumption of gasoline has dropped by almost a sixth more than a month after the government announced its controversial fuel price hikes.

A senior Oil Ministry official said on Monday that the total gasoline pumped into the cars across the country had decreased to 75.5 million liters a day on average in the month ending December 21, 2019.

Amir Vakilzadeh said the figure shows a reduction of 15.9 percent compared to the same period in 2018, Presstv Reported.

The official, who serves as the CEO of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC), said daily gasoline consumption could have reached nearly 100 million liters a day at the beginning of the next Iranian calendar year in March if price hikes had not been implemented in November.

Vakilzadeh said consumption had grown by 6.1 percent year-on-year before the fuel price hikes were announced on November 15 to reach an average of 94.4 million liters a day.

Iranian motorists were taken by surprise last month when they came to know of the government’s abrupt decision to increase the price of gasoline by three times while a cap of 60 liters a month was also imposed for half-price, rationed gasoline.

The government stood by the hikes despite protests and riots that erupted across the country.

Officials said the hikes were necessary to contain rampant smuggling of the fuel across the borders and a growing demand which could force the country to resume imports at a time the oil industry in under heavy American sanctions.

The Oil Ministry has said that lower domestic consumption of gasoline can allow exports of the fuel to neighboring countries while it would help diversify the fuel basket inside Iran through supplying more compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to the motorists.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Iranian parliament has withdrawn a motion to impeach Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh a month after he was accused of ignoring the will of the lawmakers before announcing a controversial fuel price hike.

“Given negotiations (held between) lawmakers and the current situation of the country, the impeachment of oil minister in no longer on the agenda,” said Jalal Mirzaei, a member of the Iranian parliament’s energy committee, in an interview with IRNA agency.

The lawmaker said Zanganeh had attended two rounds of inquiry in the energy committee to respond to questions of the lawmakers regarding the fuel price hike.

The government’s decision to abruptly increase the price of gasoline on November 15 caused an unprecedented wave of protests across Iran.

Some lawmakers in the parliament blamed the oil ministry for the crisis, saying authorities should have consulted the parliament before increasing the prices.

Zanganeh, a long-serving minister and a face of Iran’s oil industry at the international level, has sought to distance his department from the decision while trying to implement plans that could offset the impacts of the price hikes on the daily lives of the Iranians.

Mirzaei said the parliament had come to the conclusion that the general political situation in the country was not ripe for holding the impeachment against Zanganeh.

The upcoming parliamentary election in February was also a reason for the lawmakers to abandon the impeachment motion against the oil minister, said the lawmaker.

Reports over the past weeks had suggested that the parliament may introduce a similar impeachment motion against Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli over his failure to coordinate government efforts during the fuel price crisis.

Spokesman of the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters’ Union Hamid Hosseini noted that a sum of 30 million liters of gasoline export per day can earn the country three billion to four billion dollars.

He noted that Iran presently produces 115 million liters of gasoline per day and as predicted by implementing the rationing scheme the country will have an excess of 30 million liters of gasoline per day which can be exported.

On November 13, the Iranian government started rationing subsidized gasoline and increased fuel prices as it plans to use the revenue for supporting underprivileged families.

On November 26, the Iranian Oil Ministry announced that domestic consumption has decreased by 19 million liters per day after the implementation of the gasoline rationing scheme in Iran.

Experts say rationing fuel in Iran would prevent tens of millions of liters of gas being wasted each day in a country which still grapples with the economic impacts of a series of American sanctions.

Iran increased the price of gas overnight on Friday while it imposed a cap on the use of the fuel with regular price of 15,000 rials ($0.12) per liter.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The fact that from the very first hours demonstrators were not joining riots and thugs in the last week’s protests over increase in gasoline price testifies the people’s vigilance and this is admirable, Brigadier General Ayoub Soleimani, the deputy police chief, said on Tuesday.

On Monday, people poured into Tehran’s main streets in very large numbers to show their allegiance to the Islamic Republic system and deplore rioters who misused the peaceful protests against increase in gas price to commit acts of violence.

On November 15, the government increased gasoline price. However, the legitimate public protests against the price increase were directed at sowing chaos through targeted attacks on public and private properties, forcing law enforcement forces to step in to stop saboteurs.

The rioters used guns and knives to attack security forces. The IRGC Deputy Chief Ali Fadavi said on Sunday that rioters shot at people and security forces from a distance of one to one and a half meters. Fadavi said the riots were contained within 48 hours.

Early estimates of an intelligence body showed that a sum of nearly 87,000 protesters and rioters had taken part in protest rallies and gatherings since November 15, when increase in gas price went into effect.

A large number of protesters, who over 93% of them were men, had only been present in the gathering centers and avoided joining the rioters in sabotage attacks.

“The identical methods of the main core of violent rioters discloses that they are fully trained individuals who have been prepared and looking forward for the situation to riot, unlike most people who have been taken off guard by the sudden hike in gas price,” the intelligence report said.

It showed that gatherings had been comprised of 50 to 1,500 people in 100 places in the country out of a number of 1,080 major towns and cities. The report said violent raids and damage inflicted on properties are larger than what happened in the February 2018 unrests.

Most cases of damage to properties had happened in Khuzestan, Tehran, Fars and Kerman provinces.

The report said most casualties had resulted from armed attacks on gas stations and military centers, adding that a number of police and Basiji forces were martyred in these attacks.

Nearly 1,000 people were arrested across the country while over 100 banks and 57 big stores were set on fire or plundered in just one province, the intelligence report said.

In a time span from November 15 to 24, Iranians consumed 79 million liters of gasoline daily, while their consumption stood at 98 million liters per day from March 21 to November 14, the ministry announced.

Iranians consumed an average level of 75 million liters of gasoline on November 24, the ministry added rejecting all the released unofficial data in the past days.

This is while on Monday, Traffic Police Chief General Kamal Hadianfar informed that following the implementation of rationing gasoline, domestic gasoline consumption has increased. “Consumption in the past two days has increased from 94 million liters to 105 million liters,” the Iranian General said.

On November 13, the Iranian government started rationing of subsidized gasoline and increased fuel prices as it plans to use the revenue for supporting underprivileged families.

According to a statement published by National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company, the price for a liter of regular gasoline was increased to 15,000 rials (nearly 35 cents at the official rate of 42,000 rials per dollar) from 10,000 rials and the monthly ration for each passenger car was set at 60 liters. Additional purchases would cost 30,000 rials per liter.

Due to heavy subsidies and devaluation of its currency, Iran has one of the cheapest fuel prices in the world and the country has been fighting rampant fuel smuggling to neighboring countries.

In one of its latest reports dubbed “World Energy Outlook 2018”, the International Energy Agency (IEA) put Iran on top of the list of the world’s countries for energy subsidies. That means Iran holds the first place among the world’s countries in terms of the volume of subsidies which is allocated to energy consumption.
