TEHRAN (Iran News) – In a coordinated campaign of seizure, the United States has blocked the domain of several Iranian official news websites as well as regional media outlets close to Iran. The move drew criticism from free speech defenders who called the U.S. move a muzzling of freedom of expression.

Late on Tuesday, the websites of a number of Iranian news media outlets, most notably the English-language Press TV and the Arabic-language Al Alam, as well as regional media outlets close to Iran, were blocked with a message showing that the websites were seized by the government of the United States.

“The domain presstv.com has been seized by the United States Government in accordance with a seizure warrant…as part of a law enforcement action by the Bureau of Industry and Security, Office of Export Enforcement and Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the message on Press TV website read.

The websites of Iran’s Arabic-language Al Kawthar television network, Yemen’s al-Masirah TV channel and Bahrain’s Lualua television network were also among the targeted outlets.

The U.S. State Department declined to comment on the matter and referred it to the Justice Department, which later issued a statement confirming the seizure of Iranian websites. The statement alleged that the targeted websites were used by the Iranian Islamic Radio and Television Union and Kata’ib Hizballah of Iraq.

“Today, pursuant to court orders, the United States seized 33 websites used by the Iranian Islamic Radio and Television Union (IRTVU) and three websites operated by Kata’ib Hizballah (KH), in violation of U.S. sanctions,” the statement said.

In an echo of the Trump administration’s allegations against Iran’s news organizations, the Justice Department accused IRTVU and others like it of being “disguised as news organizations or media outlets” and targeting “the United States with disinformation campaigns and malign influence operations.”

“Thirty-three of the websites seized today were operated by IRTVU. The 33 domains are owned by a United States company. IRTVU did not obtain a license from OFAC prior to utilizing the domain names. Three additional websites seized today were operated by KH,” the statement continued.

It added, “These website seizures were investigated by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security, Office of Export Enforcement and the FBI. The National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section prosecuted the seizure. Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers for the Justice Department’s National Security Division; Special Agent in Charge J.C. (Chris) Hacker, of the FBI’s Atlanta Field Office; and Special Agent in Charge Ariel Joshua Leinwand, of the Bureau of Industry and Security, Office of Export Enforcement’s Atlanta Office, made the announcement. The National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section is investigating this matter in coordination with the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division and Atlanta Field Office.”

This is not the first time that the U.S. targets Iranian news organizations or media outlets allegedly affiliated with Iran. Under Trump, the U.S. seized dozens of websites operated by Iranian entities or non-Iranian groups. Among these websites, was the Fars News.

Press TV has also been targeted many times by U.S. social media and internet services companies. Technology giant Google has targeted Press TV at least seven times, blocking the English-language news network’s access to its official YouTube account without any prior notice.

“We have reviewed your content and found severe or repeated violations of our Community Guidelines. Because of this, we have removed your channel from YouTube,” Google told the Iranian broadcaster in a message in late March after blocking its access to YouTube.

Over the past years, the U.S. tech giant has recurrently been opting for such measures against Iranian media outlets. It has taken on Press TV more than any other Iranian outlet given the expanse of its viewership and readership, according to Press TV.

Analysts believe the U.S. move against Iranian news organizations reflects a sense of American failure in suffocating the Iranian narrative. Ben Norton, an American journalist and commentator, has called the U.S. seizure of Iranian websites “another attack on freedom of press and speech.”

In an interview with Press TV, Norton described the U.S. move as “desperation to control a narrative that Washington has lost control of.”

“It’s incredible to see that while the U.S. government is accusing other countries of supposedly violating press freedoms, it’s actually seizing the property of foreign media outlets and not just Iranian but also Yemeni. This is rather incredible because of course there’s so much propaganda and fake news and dehumanization in the Western media. The U.S. government claims for instance that the IRGC is a terrorist organization, which is an absurd designation. This is a major violation of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. And it’s especially ironic coming from a government that … even carries out a cruise in the name of defending freedom of speech and democracy and civil liberties when it is actually violating them pretty egregiously,” Norton said.

He added that the claim that Press TV and other media outlets are supposedly disseminating disinformation is laughable on its face. “When the U.S. government says disinformation what it really means is information that Washington doesn’t like. And we’ve seen the U.S. government use this talking point to censor outlets not only abroad but also at home. It’s a desperation to control a narrative that Washington has lost control of,” Norton continued.

Iran condemned the U.S. move against Iranian news websites, calling it “illegal” and “bullying.”

An Iranian official at the United Nations called the U.S.’s move to block Iranian websites illegal and said, “This issue will be pursued through legal channels.”

Rejecting the U.S. “illegal and bullying”, the Iranian diplomat told IRNA on Tuesday that the move was an attempt to restrict freedom of expression.

Mahmoud Vaezi, the Iranian president’s chief of staff, accused the U.S. of pursuing double standards in terms of dealing with freedom of expression.

“They always have a double standard, that is, they observe the issue that pertains to themselves and their friends, but what pertains to other countries and Islamic countries, they have a double discriminatory approach,” Vaezi told reporters on Wednesday.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry also reacted to the U.S. seizure of Iranian websites. Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh, in response to the seizure of Iranian media websites belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Radio and Television, called the move a “systematic attempt by the United States to undermine global freedom of expression and silence independent voices in the media.”

The spokesman called it shameful for Washington to continue these double standards, adding that the current U.S. administration is following in the footsteps of the previous U.S. administration, which will only lead to a double defeat for Washington.

At the end of his statement, Khatibzadeh emphasized that “the Islamic Republic of Iran, while rejecting this illegal and bullying action, will pursue the issue through legal channels.”

A leader of Yemen’s Ansarallah also reacted to the seizure, saying it showed that the message has been delivered.

Mohammad Ali al-Houthi, a member of the Yemeni Ansarallah political bureau, in response to the U.S. move to close several official Iraqi, Yemeni and Iranian websites, stressed that the move reflects the influence of these networks.

In a tweet on Tuesday, al-Houthi said the U.S. seizure of these websites shows that their message has been received and that these outlets have made an impact, and that free media frightens regimes claiming to defend freedom of expression.

He added that this move also shows the falsehood and superficiality of American democracy and proves that America acts on the principle of comprehensive confrontation and is the example of the verse of the Qur’an which says to comprehensively fight the polytheists as they fight comprehensively.

Yemen’s Al Masirah website was among the outlets targeted by the latest wave of U.S. seizures. Ansarallah reactivated the Al Masirah network a few hours after it became unavailable using another domain.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Around 3,000 Iranian lawyers strongly condemned the flagrant violation of the right to free speech and free flow of information by Western social media platforms through blocking the social media pages of Iran’s English language broadcaster Press TV.

Some three thousand Iranian legal experts, in a statement, vehemently denounced the blatant violation of freedom of speech by Western media platforms in closing the international social accounts of Iran’s Press TV channel, stressing that the move has been taken under the US and Israeli coercion.

The statement was issued on Monday in the wake of Google banning for the seventh time Iran’s 24-hour English-language Press TV news network last month and blocking the network’s access to its official YouTube account without any prior notice.

The move was taken after another hostile move on the Iranian media outlets, with Facebook shutting down the official page of Press TV over what it claimed to be its failure to follow “Community Standards.” The page was later reinstated.

“While the administrators of social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube boast about being the pioneers of freedom of expression and consider that freedom as a fundamental principle in their platforms, we witness on a daily basis that many user accounts around the world, namely those on Facebook, are subjected to restrictions such as deleting posts and eventually blocking and permanently suspending accounts,” the lawyers wrote in the statement.

“Despite claiming to respect freedom of expression, the US-based social media companies in recent years have repeatedly acted against the Iranian media,” the statement said, adding, “And following the illegal blocking of a large number of Persian-language pages on Facebook, Google and Twitter, the accounts belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB)’s World Service have, as a result, been blocked in recent months.”

The legal experts stressed that such restrictions are a clear violation of freedom of speech and contrary to the principle of free flow of information.

They also referred to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, which stipulates, “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

The statement also pointed to the American Magazine Intercept, which revealed in a report in December 2017 that Facebook was acting on the orders of the US government and Israeli officials to delete the pages and content of some activists.

“Facebook recently deleted hundreds of accounts in cyberspace under the pretext of having posted messages in support of the Iranian government, and in a similar move a few months ago, blocked the official page of Iran’s Arabic-language Alalam news network, claiming without providing conclusive evidence that the IRIB had been using hundreds of ‘fake user accounts’ since 2011 to influence voters in various countries, including Britain and the United States, and to send messages in support of the Iranian government,” the Iranian lawyers continued in their statement.

“These platforms, under false pretenses, block independent voices trying to liberate human beings,” they added.

The statement further underlined that Facebook, in recent months, has on several occasions resorted to unsubstantiated allegations to delete accounts run by Iranian users who voiced their support for the Iranian nuclear deal and displayed opposition to the Israeli occupation.

“Such deletion of user accounts is not limited to Iranian users,” the statement said, adding, “The double standard applied by YouTube in dealing with its users indicate the direct influence these networks are under pressure from American statesmen and Zionists, which is contrary to their claim of being advocates of freedom of expression.”

The statement concluded, “We, the lawyers, while denouncing the double standard and contradiction in remarks made by social media administrators, call on the Iranian Judiciary’s High Council for Human Rights and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as defenders of the rights of the Iranian people, and on the UN Human Rights Council and the United Nations itself, as international organizations missioned to safeguard human rights, to take urgent action to prevent censorship and obstruction of free flow of information.”

Google shut YouTube accounts of Press TV late on Tuesday, March 30, on claims of what it called “violations of community guidelines.”

“We have reviewed your content and found severe or repeated violations of our Community Guidelines. Because of this, we have removed your channel from YouTube,” Google’s message reads.

The last time Google blocked Press TV’s access to its official YouTube account was last September, again without any prior notice but citing “violations of export laws.”

On Thursday, Pompeo said he was willing to go to Iran and appear on Iranian TV amid tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Asked if he would be willing to go to Tehran, Pompeo said in an interview with Bloomberg TV, “Sure. If that’s the call, I’d happily go there… I would welcome the chance to speak directly to the Iranian people.”

Peyman Jebelli, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting’s deputy head and the CEO of IRIB’s World Service, which includes Press TV, said in an interview on Sunday, “We have neither made a request to have an interview [with Pompeo], nor have any plan to arrange an interview with America’s Secretary of State [Mike] Pompeo,” according to the TV channel’s website.

Jebelli’s remarks came after Ali Rabiei, the spokesman for the Rouhani administration, said in his weekly press conference earlier the day that if Pompeo is willing to talk to Iranian reporters, he can have an interview with Press TV correspondent and anchor, Marziyeh Hashemi, who was detained by the U.S. government on baseless grounds during a visit to meet with his family in the United States in January 2019.

“Pompeo has said that he is willing to talk to Iranian reporters. We say that we have Ms. Marziyeh Hashemi, who can talk to him and we are not going to avoid this issue,” he added.

Among other Western news outlets, the AFP published a misinformed version of Rabiei’s remarks, with the running headline “Iran invites Pompeo for interview by reporter once detained in U.S.”

Hashemi, a 59-year-old American-born Muslim convert who has lived in Iran for years, was detained at St. Louis Lambert International Airport in Missouri on January 13 while in the U.S. to visit her ill brother and other family members.

She was transferred to a detention facility in Washington, DC, where she was initially forced to remove her hijab and only offered non-halal food.

The FBI declined to comment on her arrest, but the U.S. government confirmed that she had been arrested as a “material witness.”

Hashemi’s arrest and suffering in U.S. jail drew condemnations inside the U.S. and abroad, sparking rallies in several countries.

She was eventually released 10 days later without any charge and returned to Iran.

Press TV anchor Marzieh Hashemi, who was jailed in the U.S. without charge for days and later freed amid public outcry, arrived at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport on Wednesday night and was welcomed by her relatives and colleagues, according to the network’s website.

Hashemi, a 59-year-old American-born Muslim convert who has lived in Iran for years, was detained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at St. Louis Lambert International Airport in Missouri on January 13 while in the U.S. to visit her ill brother and other family members.

The head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) World Service, Peyman Jebelli, told reporters at Imam Khomeini Airport that the release of Marzieh Hasehmi marked a victory for freedom of expression and a setback for the U.S.

Jebelli said the U.S., which was seeking to humiliate the Press TV anchor, was itself belittled by all those who stood by her.

He said that support for her was synonymous with support for justice and righteousness.

Hashemi was released on January 23 after some 10 days in detention without a charge at a facility in Washington DC.

A U.S. federal court failed to indict the journalist, who was arrested as a material witness and in an unspecified criminal proceeding, of any crime.

Hashemi’s detention prompted condemnation in the U.S. and abroad, sparking rallies in several countries.

In an address during demonstrations in Washington, Hashemi recounted her ordeal during her time in jail and mistreatment by the American justice system.

While in detention, she was forced to remove her hijab and was only offered non-halal food.

Following her release, her family issued a statement reiterating the need for justice in similar cases.

“Marzieh and her family will not allow this to be swept under the carpet,” the woman’s family said in the statement. “(They) still have serious grievances [and] they want assurances that this won’t happen to any Muslim – or any other person – ever again.”

Marzieh hashemi, who was released on Wednesday after spending 10 days in U.S. detention without charge, has spoken to Press TV about her experience and how she is resolved to prevent others from being subjected to such mistreatment by the American justice system.

During a live interview with Press TV from Washington on Thursday evening, Hashemi said while she had long been “harassed” by American security officers during her previous trips to her homeland, the detention took everything to a “whole new level.”

“In general, when I travel throughout the United States and domestic flights… I always have to be at the airports three to three-and-a-half hours prior to flight just to make it through all obstacles,” she said.

Hashemi said she was with her son, Reza, when the FBI arrested her and put her in handcuffs on January 13 before boarding a flight to Denver.

She spent the night at St. Louis airport before being transferred to the FBI’s headquarters in Washington, DC, the next day.

There, FBI agents kept telling Hashemi that she was not being charged while they took her fingerprints.

“Then, they said they had to get my DNA,” Hashemi said, adding the agents performed a DNA swap on her against her will.

She was then moved to Washington’s central jail and then to another detention facility, where she was “strip searched”.

“Our viewers know me, I am… a practicing Muslim and I do adhere to hijab,” she said. “So for me, a scarf is even important to wear in front of males and I was subjected to a strip search and I was not allowed to put my scarf on for the mug shot.”

Hashemi was taken to the court after spending a night in the facility’s “unbelievable conditions,” where she was incarcerated in solitary confinement next to other people from different nationalities that the FBI had detained for unknown reasons.

To get to the courtroom, Marzieh was forced to climb the stairs while in shackles because of the malfunctioning elevators that authorities had been unable to repair due to the ongoing government shutdown.

“The overall treatment… was one of sheer disrespect, disregard and no one should be treated like this,” she said.

“Yes, I live in Iran, I work in Iran right now, but I do come back and forth into the United States, it is my home and I have the right to come back here whenever I want,” she added.

At one point, Hashemi said, there were guards sitting outside her cell that inmates later on said had her under a “suicide watch”.

“When I heard that… [I said] I know that I’m not going to kill myself, so there could be something else up here,” she said.

That’s when she asked one of the prisoners who was getting out to inform her daughter that “if anything happens to me she knows it’s not from suicide.”

Hashemi said she was “humbled” by global calls to free her, but the mission was far from accomplished as many others could face the same ordeal as long as the U.S. justice system remained the same.

“I’ve always been a person to say what I believe, and to be a firm believer in trying to fight for what is right and what is true and very much against oppression,” Hashemi said. “So, people like me always pay a price.”

“What happened to me could happen to anyone, and it’s not about me, Marzieh Hashemi,” she added.

Hashemi doubled down on the need to change once and for all detention laws used as a “fear tactic” by U.S. authorities to incarcerate innocent people without any charges as long as they pleased.

“I don’t believe that a majority of American people and people around the world believe that this should be allowed in a country that says it believes in human rights,” she added. “So I am calling and asking people to stand in solidarity and condemn these types of acts.”

“It is with fear that powers-that-be try to control those who believe in freedom. But ultimately, it’s the people united who can make changes and I’m asking to demand an end to this oppression that is taking place in the U.S. judicial system,” Hashemi added.

“I just want to reiterate again, on Friday, tomorrow, that if there is a demonstration in your city, wherever you are in the world, that people come out for these protests,” she said.

Concluding her remarks, Hashemi reiterated her will to continue the fight at all costs.

“I will speak out until my last breath always,” she said.

“They came for me last week; tomorrow who are they going to go to? Who are they going to pick up? When are you going to say enough is enough? And I have to stand up for what is right no matter the cost,” she said.

The US government has released Marzieh Hashemi, Press TV’s news presenter imprisoned in the US for 10 days, her family announced.

The Iranian journalist was freed after appearing before a grand jury in Washington, DC, for a third time on Wednesday morning.

The Washington Post, citing three sources familiar with the case, said Hashemi was released from US government custody after completing her testimony before the federal jury.

In a statement, her family also confirmed her release, saying, “Marzieh Hashemi has been released from her detention without charge and is with her family in Washington DC”.

“Marzieh and her family will not allow this to be swept under the carpet. They still have serious grievances and want answers as to how this was allowed to happen,” the statement read.

“They want assurances that this won’t happen to any Muslim – or any other person – ever again”.

Hashemi’s family further referred to the “harassment of the Muslim community by the FBI”, calling on the US government to start talking about it.

Rallies are scheduled to be held in 24 cities across the globe on Friday, January 25, in support of the Iranian journalist and the US black community.

“Marzieh Hashemi will be remaining in Washington DC for the protest on Friday and calls for all cities across the world to keep their protest,” the family statement said.

Hashemi, a 59-year-old American-born Muslim convert who has lived in Iran for years, was detained at St. Louis Lambert International Airport in Missouri last Sunday while in the US to visit her ill brother and other family members.

She was transferred to a detention facility in Washington, DC, where she was initially forced to remove her hijab and only offered non-halal food.

According to Press TV, Hashemi is being held at a detention facility in Washington DC although no formal charges have been pressed against her.

The American-born journalist and television presenter, who had been traveling within the United States to visit her ill brother and other relatives, was detained at St. Louis Lambert International Airport on Sunday, and later transferred by the FBI to the detention facility.

Relatives had been unable to contact her for over 48 hours, and only recently learned about her detention.

Even though there are no charges against her, Hashemi informed family members of mistreatment at the detention center. She said her hijab had been removed against her will, and that she was being treated as a criminal.

Prison officials have also denied her access to halal or vegetarian dietary options for the past few days. She mentioned that she had only been able to eat Pretzels and bread.
