TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Nicolas Maduro says US financial sanctions have caused Venezuela’s oil revenues to plunge 99 percent over the last six years.

Venezuela is the owner of the world’s largest oil reserves, but its oil industry is hobbled by US sanctions which have thrown the country into its worst economic crisis in years, Press TV reported.

Maduro said $30 billion have been lost each year since 2015, adding, “It’s impossible to imagine the amount of pressure placed on our economy.”

“For every 100 dollars obtained through oil sales in 2014, we receive one today,” which means oil revenues fell from more than $56 billion in 2013 “to less than $400 million last year,” Reuters quoted him as saying.

According to Maduro, Venezuela experienced the “sharpest” foreign exchange losses in its history between 2014 and 2019. “In six years we lost 99 percent of our foreign exchange revenues,” he said.

The main reason for the huge drop in revenues was “the war declared on oil prices,” to “attacking the world’s major producers,” he said.

With most ship-owners and oil traders shunning business with Venezuela for fear of the sanctions, Iran has emerged as the only country helping Caracas bring its refineries back to service and cope with an acute fuel shortage.

The Iran-flagged tanker Forest, the first of a group of three tankers transporting some 270,000 barrels of Iranian fuel to Venezuela, entered the waters of the South American country on Monday, reports said.

The two following Iranian tankers, the Faxon and the Fortune, are estimated to arrive in early October. They are together expected to deliver about 820,000 barrels of gasoline and other fuels, helping to ease shortages in Venezuela.

The same vessels and two additional Iranian tankers delivered 1.5 million barrels of gasoline and diesel fuel to Venezuela between May and June despite US threats to stop them, while the South American nation shipped a cargo vessel carrying alumina to Iran’s Bandar Abbas port.

A very large Iranian crude carrier (VLCC) is expected to leave Venezuela’s Jose port, with 1.9 million barrels of Venezuelan heavy oil which is for sale in Asia.

Lessons learnt from Iran

On Tuesday, Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza was quoted as saying that his country had learnt from Tehran how to confront coercive US measures.

After talking with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif via a video call, Arreaza also said that Venezuela’s historic relations with Iran are at their best.

Washington has sought to disrupt the deepening bilateral trade between the two countries.

Last month, the US government went on a full-throttle propaganda campaign, claiming that it had seized 1.116 million barrels of Iranian fuel because it was bound for Venezuela.

Iran, however, asserted that neither the ships were Iranian nor their owners; their cargo had no connection with the Islamic Republic.

Leading American magazine Foreign Policy said this month that Tehran is now sharing its lessons in resilience with the beleaguered Venezuelan government.

“The simple fact that Iran, which has faced a broad campaign of sanctions for more than a decade, has recently come to the aid of Venezuela, which has been under concerted sanctions pressure for only a few years, suggests a remarkable degree of economic resilience. When comparing the two economies, the most salient question is not whether Iran will become like Venezuela, but rather whether Venezuela will become more like Iran,” the US publication said.

Venezuela pledged to continue trade with Iran after the US announced new sanctions on Iranian officials’ entities as well as President Maduro this month.

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said, “No intimidating and arrogant action by the US government will prevent it from exercising its sovereign right to establish economic and commercial relations freely with the Islamic Republic of Iran or with any State.”

Venezuela: Past, Present and Future

Americans after suffering consecutive defeats in the Middle East, including Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen, today is facing a rising power in the South America that yesterday through making political and economic hype, it failed to bring down this rising phenomenon, Venezuela, which has almost been soaked by the rain of resistance maturity in the region.

IRAN NEWS POLITICAL DESK

Yesterday all pressures were focused on a point that was the source of all independence-seeking movements in the region and the U.S. tried its best to push back this move to its starting point and to dry up the grounds for materialization of anti-capitalist revolutions in the continent which is attributed to the U.S. and some in its neighborhood.

In almost past three years, the White House, led by President Donald Trump, has constantly stepped up its economic sanctions against Venezuela and has condemned Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and in fact it called on Venezuelan people to topple Maduro’s government which is actually an anti-U.S. government and source of materialization of interests of anti-capitalists of the U.S. type in this half of the continent. But Iran and Venezuela hand in hand thwarted all seditions and plots one after the other.

Since January 5, 2019 when Juan Guaido became the president of National Assembly of Venezuela, he actively tried to make Venezuela’s military and international communities recognize him as Venezuela’s legitimate president.

After President Trump’s recognition of Guaido as Venezuela’s President, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, Peru and Chile also recognized Guaido as legitimate president. Of course, Guaido with support of Trump in a speech addressing his supporters in the east of Caracas said, “I swear to take charge as the caretaker president of Venezuela till to topple this usurper government.”

But where does he stand today and where does Venezuela stand? Today Venezuela’s economy is moving on course to produce gasoline domestically and to solve its economic problems as a leading country in the continent. Tomorrow the story is totally different. Tomorrow Venezuela will be Iran’s counterpart in the continent because Maduro thinks of making its military independent and he wants to boost his country’s military power and capability.

This week and reacting to his Colombian counterpart’s claim that Caracas intends to buy missiles from Iran, Maduro welcomed the idea. During a televised broadcast with cabinet members, instructing Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino to follow up and jokingly telling his cabinet to keep the plan a secret, noting, “It had not occurred to me.”

In order to herald his ambition to neighboring states, supporters and opponents, he said “What a good idea, to speak with Iran to see what short, medium and long range missiles they have, and if it is possible, given the great relations we have with Iran.”

Earlier the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Embassy in Caracas had announced that Iran was on the verge of finalizing a trade deal with this Latin American state. Last week, a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of restoration of ties between Iran and Venezuela was held in Caracas with senior Venezuelan officials and Iran’s ambassador in presence. Iranian officials have not reacted to Maduro’s remarks on buying missiles from Iran. But regarding this point that political relations between both states are progressing on course to the growth of resistance culture, undoubtedly the Islamic Republic of Iran’s response, if it is officially received, would be positive.

Venezuela has actually been the U.S.’s backyard in the Latin-speaking countries and it is still, but since creation of motivation, it has provided Iran with appropriate ground for promoting the criteria for intensifying resistance against anti-justice capitalism.

Iran and Venezuela hand in hand will make the future of the Latin America and this motivation will provide the ground for weakening Washington.

Russia Sends Lavrov to Venezuela to ‘Counteract’ US Sanctions

According To Iran News, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will visit Venezuela on Friday in a show of support for President Nicolas Maduro, a socialist who Washington wants out of power.

Russia has helped Maduro weather a political crisis as the US has targeted Caracas with sanctions and recognizes opposition politician Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s legitimate interim leader.

Moscow has denounced the US sanctions as illegal and damaging, while Venezuela’s opposition has urged Washington to step up pressure on Russia for its economic, diplomatic and military support of Maduro.

Lavrov, foreign minister since 2004, flies to Latin America on Wednesday, stopping in Cuba before heading to Mexico on Thursday and Venezuela the next day.

His trip follows a tour by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of four former Soviet states – Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan – in a region that Moscow sees as its backyard.

In Venezuela, Lavrov will meet Maduro as well as Executive Vice President Delcy Rodriguez and Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza for talks that will broach deeper cooperation on energy, mining, transport, agriculture and defense, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said, Reuters reported.

“The agenda includes a discussion of steps … to counteract illegal unilateral sanctions that worsen the socioeconomic situation in Venezuela,” ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

The United States last year ratcheted up diplomatic pressure on Venezuela and imposed sanctions on the OPEC member’s state oil company, PDVSA.

Venezuela’s opposition disputed the legitimacy of Maduro’s re-election to a second term in 2018, and opposition leader Guaido proclaimed himself interim president in January last year, winning the backing of Washington and a few other countries.

Maduro has remained in power though, backed by the military as well as Russia, China, Iran and Cuba.

In Mexico, Lavrov will meet Foreign Secretary Luis Ebrard Casaubon to discuss economic and trade ties as well as cooperation with the Community of Latin America and Caribbean States (CELAC). In Cuba, Lavrov will meet his counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Zakharova said.

Maduro Says US, Colombia Preparing Provocation

According To Iran News, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said he had information that Colombia and the United States were planning a provocation on the Bolivarian Republic’s western border and called on all staff of the country’s armed forces to be prepared for battle.

“I have information that Colombia, together with the US Southern Command are planning to launch another provocation at the Venezuelan border with Colombia. All staff of Venezuela’s armed forces must be combat ready”, Maduro said on Friday during his meeting with the country’s transportation employees broadcast via Twitter, Sputnik reported.

The president added that the provocations served to incite a military conflict on the Venezuela-Colombia border in order to draw attention away from the protests taking place in Colombia.

Back in September, Maduro announced large-scale military exercises on the country’s western border with Colombia, saying its neighbor presented a level orange security threat.

The two neighboring nations regularly accuse each other of supporting anti-government forces.

The political crisis in Venezuela intensified earlier in January when merely two weeks after Maduro’s inauguration for his second term, opposition lawmaker Juan Guaido illegally proclaimed himself “interim president” and called on citizens to help him take power in the country.

Guaido immediately received support from the United States and some Latin American countries, including Colombia, while Maduro accused him of trying to stage a coup in Venezuela with the help of the US.

He also accused Bogota of being behind the plot to overthrow and assassinate him.

While Guaido was endorsed as “president” by the US and Colombia, a number of countries, including Russia and China, have said they only recognize Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela.

Bachelet arrived in Venezuela on Wednesday at the invitation of Maduro and is expected to meet government and opposition leaders before making a statement on Friday, the last day of her visit.

Venezuela’s economy has been in precipitous decline following a global downturn in the price of crude oil, the country’s main export. A political unrest has been ongoing between Maduro and opposition leader Guaido since January.

Nearly 5,000 people leave Venezuela every day because of “instability and uncertainty” amid a crisis over the presidency and economy and 3 million Venezuelans have already left the country since 2015, according to UN Refugee Agency reports.

President Nicolas Maduro said Wednesday that US President Donald Trump continues to threaten Venezuela with military intervention and urged all nations to stand in solidarity with his country.

Speaking to reporters at the Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas, Maduro recalled Trump’s previous remarks signaling military intervention was “an option” after Washington recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country’s interim president last month.

“Today, the US president has threatened Venezuela with military intervention. I want all world (countries) to act in solidarity (with Venezuela),” Maduro said, Anadolu Agency reported.

“We are not slaves, beggars and servants of anybody. We are free women and men. This honor we have deep inside is our biggest motivation and gratification,” he said, pointing to the Venezuelan people’s “historical heroism” against US attempts to take control of Venezuela.

On Wednesday, Trump said he would look at all the different options in dealing with the situation in Venezuela but did not discuss military intervention.

Trump’s remarks came amid a continued diplomatic and economic push by the US to force Maduro to cede power to National Assembly leader Juan Guaido, who declared himself interim president on Jan. 23.

The US, Canada, some countries in Latin America and over 20 European nations have lent their backing to Guaido following the announcement. But Maduro has refused calls for him to step down, insisting Washington is orchestrating a coup.

China, Iran, Russia and Turkey have put their weight behind Maduro.

Earlier Wednesday, Eliot Engel, the Democratic chairman of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, ruled out any support for military intervention in Venezuela and criticized Trump.

“I do worry about the president’s saber rattling, his hints that US military intervention remains an option. I want to make clear to our witnesses and to anyone else watching: US military intervention is not an option,” the congressman said at a hearing.
