TEHRAN (Iran News) –The government opened a series of major electricity projects in the energy-rich province of Khuzestan in its southwest amid plans to boost business activity in the region.

President Ebrahim Raisi on Thursday opened a 307 megawatt (MW) power plant in Do Kuheh area near the city of Andimeshk in Khuzestan.

The gas-fired electricity station is a first phase of a combined cycle power plant in Do Kuheh which includes an unfinished steam unit with a generation capacity of 144 MW.

The government has spent some 142 million euros on construction of the gas unit of the Do Kuheh power plant, according to a report by Raisi’s website, which added that the power plant will create 100 permanent jobs in the region.

The report said the F-class power plant will have an efficiency rate of 58%, one of the highest in Iran.

Using a video conference link, Raisi also inaugurated dozens of other water and electricity projects across Khuzestan, a province of more than five million people which is home to some of Iran’s largest oilfields.

Among the projects was a 196 MW steam unit in the West Karun power plant, a project which will boost electricity supply to oilfields near Iran’s border with Iraq. The power plant unit, which had been opened in July last year, was synchronized with the national power grid in Iran on Thursday.

The official IRNA news agency said a total of 33 new energy projects with an investment of 87 trillion rials ($174 million) were opened during Raisi’s visit to Khuzestan.

Later in the day President Raisi said that the country is making progress despite foreign threats and pressures, stressing that the existing problems will certainly be resolved by the Iranian people without any help from foreigners.

Raisi made the remarks while addressing crowds of people in the city of Andimeshk on the second leg of his tour of the southwestern province of Khuzestan.

The president said that the government, in cooperation with the people, is making efforts to advance the country’s progress in economic, social and cultural fields, despite foreign threats and pressures.

He said that measures are underway to both nullify and lift sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The president said that Iran has a bright future ahead and that the enemy would not be successful in its attempts to create hopelessness and pessimism in the country.

Raisi’s trip to Khuzestan is part of the second round of his provincial tours since he took office in August 2021. The trips are aimed at dealing with issues and problems affecting different provinces.

Earlier on Thursday, the Iranian president had visited Dezful, a city known as the symbol of resistance in Iran during the imposed war of Iraq’s toppled dictator Saddam Hussein in the 1980s.

Meanwhile Raisi underlined that unity of Iranian tribes and ethnic groups in Khuzestan has always foiled the enemies’ plots, and said that this unity and solidarity should be preserved.

President Raisi in his Thursday meeting with the heads of Khuzestani tribes at Ershad Mosque of Ahvaz said that Khuzestan has paid its fair share to country, adding that today, the entire Iranians, and especially the government officials must frankly be fully at the service of this province and its warm-blooded citizens.

President Raisi said that employment is the 1st priority in Khuzestan, and using the local workforce in all sectors has priority compared to using non-local forces, and the companies stationed in this province must take advantage of the Khuzestani youth as their 1st priority.

He said that the last summer water crisis of Khuzestan no longer exists, thanks to good water management, adding, “The resulted tensions due to that water crisis could have led to serious tension in the region, but we fortunately was overcome thanks to competent water management in the province.

“My greatest pride is being the servant of the people, and I will spare no effort in resolving the problems with which Khuzestan province and our citizens in this province are entangled,” President Raisi added.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Energy Ministry cuts off power of 4 govt. entities for over-consumption. Iranian Energy Ministry‘s Spokesman for Electricity Industry Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi said the ministry has cut the power of four major government entities for violation of consumption criteria set by the ministry.

“The electricity supply to these organizations was cut off since they have had previously received warnings for violating the consumption ceiling and the criteria set by the ministry,” Mashahdi said.

According to the official, Industry, Mining, and Trade Ministry, Bank Mellat, Cooperative Foundation, and the State Organization for Registration of Deeds and Properties were the organizations whose power supply was cut off.

Earlier this month, Managing Director of Tehran Electricity Distribution Company Hassan Sabouri had announced that a group of 2,500 supervisors has been tasked to monitor the electricity consumption in government entities during the peak consumption period in order to report any misuse back to the governor to be pursued.

In the past decade, constant temperature rising and the significant decrease of rainfalls across Iran have put the country in a hard situation regarding electricity supply during peak consumption periods.

In this regard, the Energy Ministry has been following new strategies in recent years to manage the consumption and lessen the electricity losses in the national grid.

According to Esmail Namazi, the generation capacity of the country’s thermal power plants has increased by 2,000 MW by implementing improvement and modernization projects during the current Iranian year (starting March 20), IRNA reported.

“These projects have been carried out with an investment of about $101.6 million while the construction of a new power plant, with 1,000 MW of capacity, requires about $357.142 million of investment,” he said.

Currently, a total of 478 thermal power plants are operating throughout Iran which includes both gas power plants and combined-cycle plants.

Over two-thirds of Iran’s thermal power plants are owned and operated by the country’s private sector and private owners are currently generating nearly 67 percent of Iran’s thermal power.

The total electricity generation capacity of Iran, currently stands at about 85,000 MW, over 90 percent of which is supplied by thermal power plants.

In September, Hamidreza Azimi, the deputy managing director for planning affairs in TPPH, announced that 1,239 MW had been added to the generation capacity of the country’s thermal power plants since the beginning of the current Iranian year.

According to data released by the Energy Ministry, from August 2013 to August 2019, a total of 69 thermal power plants were constructed across the country, to add 8,991 MW to the capacity of the country’s thermal electricity output.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Hundreds of thousands of people are without power after Hurricane Isaias made landfall in the US, bringing with it winds of 85mph and the threat of storm surges and flash floods.

By the time the eye of Isaias hit southern North Carolina it had strengthened into a category one hurricane from a tropical storm.

It is due to make its way up the US eastern coast towards Washington، Philadelphia and New York، the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said، Sky News reported.

“Power outages in North Carolina from Isaias have now surpassed 200،000 outages” the Carolina Weather Group said.

Isaias killed two people in the Caribbean and struck the Bahamas، but remained at sea as it brushed past Florida over the weekend.

“Only gradual weakening is anticipated after Isaias makes landfall in the Carolinas and moves across the US mid-Atlantic,” the NHC said.

“Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.”

Ferry operators completed evacuations from Ocracoke Island in North Carolina’s Outer Banks، moving more than 3،500 people and 1،700 vehicles off the island over four days.

Coastal residents secured their homes، shops and restaurants closed early and most beachgoers abandoned the sand and surf with storm surges of up to 5ft (1.5m) and up to 8ins (20cm) of rain forecast in areas.

“All those rains could produce flash flooding across portions of the eastern Carolinas and mid-Atlantic، and even in the northeast US,” said Daniel Brown، senior hurricane specialist at the NHC.

The NHC also warned of possible tornadoes in North Carolina early on Tuesday، and from eastern Virginia to southern New England later.

A tropical storm warning extended all the way up to Maine، where flash flooding was possible in some areas on Wednesday.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper warned of severe inland flooding as rescue teams، high-water vehicles and helicopters were put on standby in the state.

Storm shelters were preparing to accommodate evacuees with at least 115 square feet (10 square meters) per person to ensure COVID-19 social distancing.

Cooper said: “North Carolinians have had to dig deep in recent months to tap into our strength and resilience during the pandemic… but we have to dig a little deeper. Let’s keep each other safe from the wind and water، as well as from the virus.”

Authorities in Myrtle Beach، South Carolina، ordered swimmers out of the water to avoid rough surf and strong rip currents.

US President Donald Trump on Monday described Isaias as “very serious” and urged communities to stay “vigilant”.

Reza Banazadeh said the power plant has resumed supplying electricity to the national grid after an overhaul operation, inspection and fuel reloading.

He noted that the “very complicated and sensitive process” of fuel reloading at the reactor of the nuclear power plant has been carried out by Iranian experts using a unique instrument known as “fuel reloading robot.”

A third of the fuel packs at the heart of the plant’s reactor was replaced during the outage period, he added.

Since coming into operation in 2011, the nuclear plant has generated over 43 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, Banazadeh stated.

In September 2013, Iran took temporary control of the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

Russia has agreed to provide the power plant’s fuel for 10 years, with the supply deal committing Tehran to return the spent fuel.

The power plant became officially operational and was connected to Iran’s national grid in September 2011.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran ranks 14th in the world in terms of power plant capacity despite the unilateral sanctions imposed by Washington on Tehran, said the energy minister.

Reza Ardakanian made the remarks on power plant capacity in an address to an open session of Iran Parliament on Wednesday, Fars News Agency reported.

Although the population of our country has increased by about two-thirds over the past four decades, Iranian citizens’ access to electricity is greater than the global average, the minister said.

Access to electricity is about 100 percent in Iran’s urban areas, while the global average is estimated at 96 percent, he added.

Since seven years ago, about 16,000 megawatts (MW) have been added to the country’s electricity generation capacity, Ardakanian said, noting, expressing hope that this figure would reach 20,000 MW and even more than that in 2021.

He added the power grids of Iran and Iraq have become synchronized since a month ago via the new Amarah-Karkheh 400-kilovolt transmission line with a length of over 73 kilometers.

The new transmission line supplies electricity to both countries. It will also help pave the way for increasing power exports to Iraq in the near future.

With the synchronization of the two countries’ power grids, the quality of electricity in Iraq will improve.

In 2004 Iran started exporting electricity to Iraq. Iran’s electricity exports to the western neighbor currently stand at 1,361 MW per day.

Earlier, the Iranian Energy Ministry said electricity loss in the domestic power distribution network has been reduced considerably, noting that it is for the first time that such a major achievement has been made.

The ministry added electricity loss across the entire domestic power distribution network had declined by 0.7 percent year-on-year to stand at 9.76 percent on March 19.

Speaking on the sidelines of an IRGC exhibition of the latest defense technologies on Wednesday in Tehran, Brigadier General Hossein Salami underlined that Iran has reached a point where no country can contain the development of its defense capabilities.

Brigadier General Salami pointed out that Iran “through combining new technologies”, has reached newer technologies, highlighting that the Islamic Republic is doing very well in a variety of most advanced and complicated defense technologies.

The IRGC deputy commander also added that Iran has made a lot of progress “in various fields relating to air, sea, land, missile defense and advanced military technologies.”

Referring to recent statements by western officials regarding the need for talks on Iran’s defense program, Salami noted that “our defense program can neither be stopped nor contained.”

“I mean containing our defense strength is well beyond any other country’s reach,” Salami added, explaining “because Iranians from all strata of our society who have the ability and expertise in this [defense] field have joined hands in standing firm agianst the irrational and oppressive expectations and meddlings of countries such as the United States and its European allies, who assume that they can stop our defense advancments by leveling threats and imposing pressure on us,” he added.

At the end of his remarks, the IRGC deputy commander underlined that one day, the antagonistic countries would come to accept Iran’s power.
