TEHRAN (Iran News) –During a meeting with Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber in Bishkek on Wednesday, Kyrgyz Prime Minister Akylbek Japarov requested Iran to help his country build power plant and refinery.

While expressing his surprise about the technical-engineering services of Iran, the official requested the Islamic Republic to provide the necessary groundwork for the construction of a power plant in this country as soon as possible.

Mokhber, heading a high-ranking Iranian delegation, left Tehran for Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to attend the 22nd Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization which will be held on Thursday, October 26.

During the meeting, which was attended by Iran’s ministers of oil, transport and urban development, and some heads of relevant organizations, important agreements were made to expand the cooperation between the two sides.

In the first step, following the agreement of the senior officials of the two countries, the transport ministers were assigned to reach an understanding during the same trip with the continuation of negotiations for the establishment of a rail corridor from Kyrgyzstan to Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Iran.

The establishment of a commercial center in Iran by Kyrgyzstan and vice versa and holding an exhibition of Iranian products in Kyrgyzstan and vice versa were among other agreements of this meeting.

Speaking to the press prior to his departure, Mokhber said: “The members of the SCO have a lot of capacity for economic cooperation, and we hope that bilateral cooperation with the Shanghai member countries will be agreed upon and planned during this trip.”

The official noted that the SCO member countries have common views with the Islamic Republic of Iran about the multipolar international order, confronting American sanctions and expanding political and economic relations.

“This shared vision can promise a bright future for the nations of the region,” he added.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, or Shanghai Pact, is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance, the creation of which was announced on June 15, 2001, in Shanghai, China by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan; the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Charter, formally establishing the organization, was signed in June 2002 and entered into force on September 19, 2003.

Iran’s 6-month trade with SCO members rises 10%

The value of Iran’s non-oil trade with member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has increased by 10 percent in the first six months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-September 22), according to the spokesman of the International Relations and Trade Development Committee of Iran’s House of Industry, Mining and Trade.

Ruhollah Latifi said the country traded about 37 million tons of non-oil goods worth $21.736 billion with the 11 member states of SCO in the mentioned six months, IRNA reported.

Iran exported 31.436 million tons of goods worth $10.583 billion to the SCO members in this period, registering a three percent decline compared to the same period last year.

Moreover, the Islamic Republic imported 5.545 million tons of goods worth $11.15 billion from the mentioned countries in the said six months, indicating a 24-percent increase compared to last year’s same time span.

Among SCO members, China was Iran’s top export destination in the said period followed by India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, and Mongolia.

China was also the top exporter to Iran, followed by India, Russia, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia.

Iran was granted long-awaited permanent membership of the SCO last year and is now completing formalities to make it official.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –The capacity of hydroelectric power plants in Iran exceeds 13,000 megawatts, the Iranian energy minister said, revealing salient progress in the final stage of construction of a 120-megawatt power plant by the Iranian experts in Sri Lanka.

In a meeting with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Irrigation Chamal Rajapaksa on Sunday, Ali Akbar Mehrabian pointed to the amicable historical relations between the two countries and expressed hope that the power plants being built by expert Iranian engineers in Sri Lanka will be inaugurated in the near future.

Emphasizing the revival and development of economic, political and cultural ties between Tehran and Colombo, Iran’s energy minister further pointed out that the two countries have much potential to strengthen their bilateral ties in all fields.

He termed establishing a joint economic, political and cultural Cooperation commission for realizing the aforementioned objective “effective and constructive”.

Launch of the commission will help boost trade and economic activities between the two countries optimally, Mehrabian emphasized.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he highlighted the capabilities and potentials of Iranian companies in implementing projects in the water and electricity fields.

He also referred to the significance of the multipurpose and giant project of “Uma Oya” being built by expert Iranian manpower in Sri Lanka and added that the progress of this successful project by Iranian engineers is the result of the fruitful experience of cooperation between the two countries.

He added that today over 13,000 megawatts of hydro power plant exists in Iran, adding that with construction of this power plant in Sri Lanka, the capacity for producing 120 megawatts of electricity will be provided which is accompanied with considerable value added.

Then Rajapaska, for his part, expressed creating the ground for broadening cooperation and relation with Iran and said that in Sri Lanka there are three ministries of energy, water and irrigation.

He added that Sri Lanka in the past year due to the post-Covid era had no good condition in the field of fuel and energy but today it is getting better and according, there is hope and expectation that Iran and Sri Lanka in the future would start new projects in the field of energy and drinking water.

Rajapaska then pointed to the considerable rise in price of energy in Sri Lanka, adding that 50% of the required energy of the country is provided through water and some part through renewable energies and the other part through solar and wind energies. He then termed important investment in the infrastructures for construction of renewable energies, adding that Tehran and Colombo can pursue issues for cooperation in this field, reiterating that one-third of Sri Lankan’s lands has capacity for advancing this cooperation and Iranians can invest in this field.

Rajapaska then welcomed implementing joint projects with Iran, adding that he will do his best to broaden ties between the two countries and his country will study the project for water supply tunnel in his country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation has accepted Iran’s demand for investing 73 million euros in Sirik power plant, an Iranian official announced.

Director of (Thermal Power Plants Holding Company) TPPH Steam Power Plant Projects Behnam Khaefi-Nejad told IRNA on Thursday that the Sirik power plant needs 73 million euros to continue operation in 2022; so, following consultations with Russians, the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation has agreed to open letter of credit (LC).

The Sirik power station is a 1,400-megawatt (MW) gas-fired power plant in Sirik county, Hormozgan Province, southern Iran.

Construction of the power plant kicked off from June 2021, he said, noting that the Russian government accepted to invest 6.2 billion euros in the project.

In accordance with pre-planned timeline, the first phase of the project will come into operation in spring 2025, he said.

The Russian Company Technopromexport has signed an agreement to invest up to 1.2 billion euros in the Sirik power plant.

The power plant is scheduled to consist of four units with the capacity of 350 MW in each unit. The total capacity of the Sirik power plant would be 1,400 MW. The first round of negotiations to construct the power plant started in 2017, but the construction operation began concurrent with opening of LC in June 2021.

Some seven Iranian companies are working in the project, employing 250 manpower directly and indirectly.

In recent meeting between Russian and Iranian economic ministers in Moscow, both sides reviewed current condition of joint projects, including Russia’s five billion dollars investment in Iran that is expected to expand bilateral economic exchanges.

Iran’s Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Ehsan Khandouzi emphasized on the need for speeding up construction of Sirik power plant, Garmsar-Inche Borun railway as well as three projects that were signed by former Iranian economic minister and his Russian counterpart.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The annual overhaul program of Iran’s power plants has begun for 40 units of power plants with a total capacity of 7,000 megawatts across Iran, Managing Director of Iran Grid Management Company Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi announced.

“Major overhaul and inspection of 40 power plant units have begun to prepare them for electricity supply in the summer of 1401 (next Iranian calendar year beginning in late March 2022),” IRNA quoted Rajabi Mashhadi as saying on Monday.

In order to ensure the proper operation of power plants in the peak consumption period, the annual overhaul program starts every year in early September and will continue until late May in the next year, the official said.

Summer months constitute Iran’s peak demand periods, so most of the power plant overhaul programs are scheduled to take place during the autumn, winter, and spring seasons.

Every year, during the overhaul program thousands of personnel constantly work to complete the annual repair program of the country’s power plants on time and ensure the stable supply of electricity to customers during peak days.

Last year, the annual overhaul program was conducted for 100,000 megawatts capacity of the country’s power plants.

The capacity of power plant units that went through the overhaul program last year increased by 11 percent compared to the preceding year.

Currently, the knowledge for producing 80 percent of the equipment and spare parts of the power plants has been localized by Iranian experts in cooperation with knowledge-based companies and research centers.

Iran’s total power generation capacity currently stands at about 85,000 MW, more than 90 percent of which is supplied by thermal power plants.

Currently, a total of 478 thermal power plants are operating throughout Iran which includes both gas power plants and combined cycle plants.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The managing director of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH) announced that the necessary permits for the construction of the power plants were issued for the big industries.

Making the remarks in a press conference on Wednesday, Mohsen Tarztalab said that the big and high-consuming industries of steel, metals, and mining have been previously supplying for the permits to construct the electricity self-supply and self-consumption units, and their requests have been examined.

The minister of industry, mining, and trade examined 13 applications in this regard in a meeting with the mentioned industries, and finally a list was prepared and sent to the Energy Ministry, the official explained.

On July 7, the deputy industry, mining, and trade minister applied for the permits for constructing power plants with the total capacity of 10,536 megawatts (MW), and related agreement in principle was issued yesterday, he added.

Mobarakeh Steel Company for 1,500 MW of new capacity, the Persian Gulf Special Zone for 1,500 MW, Al-Mahdi Aluminum Company for 500 MW, Chadormalu Mining and Industrial Company for 1,000 MW and Golgohar Mining and Industrial Company Phase 2 for 1,300 MW were among the industries that applied, the official further announced.

Deputy Industry Minister Saeed Zarandi had told Mehr News Agency on Sunday that the Ministries of Energy and Industry, Mining and Trade are going to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) within a week for collaboration in constructing 13 power plants for industrial units across the country.

“This week or during the next week, a memorandum of understanding will be signed between the two ministers of industry and energy to start the construction of 13 power plants for industrial units across the country,” the official had stated.

“Since earlier this year, the Industry Ministry, on behalf of the industrial sector, started seeking a permit for building 13 power plants. We held several meetings with Tavanir [Iran’s Power Generation, Distribution, and Transmission Company] and the Energy Ministry and proposed to sign a memorandum of understanding with the ministry. We also sent a letter to the Energy Ministry last week to expedite the issuance of the permit,” Zarandi explained.

According to the official, the mentioned power plants are financed by 12 investors from various industrial sectors and will be constructed within 2.5-3 years.

The official noted that the power plants will have a total capacity of about 10,536 megawatts whose output will be used by the mentioned industrial units.

As reported, the said power plants will be constructed in Isfahan, Hormozgan, Markazi, Yazd, Kerman, Fars, Semnan, and Khuzestan provinces.

One of the main goals of this program is to provide reliable and sustainable electricity to high-consuming industries and the country’s industrial parks in order to reduce the pressure imposed on the national grid in the industry and mining sector, according to Zarandi.

“If these power plants are built, a significant load will be removed from the national electricity distribution network,” he stressed.

The official further noted that in case of any surplus electricity generation, the industrial units can sell the surplus electricity to the Energy Ministry.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran has added 464 megawatts (MW) to its electricity generation capacity by upgrading the gas units of power plants, announced the director general of the Research and Construction Department of Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH).

According to Esmail Namazi, the generation capacity of the country’s thermal power plants has increased by 2,000 MW by implementing improvement and modernization projects during the current Iranian year (starting March 20), IRNA reported.

“These projects have been carried out with an investment of about $101.6 million while the construction of a new power plant, with 1,000 MW of capacity, requires about $357.142 million of investment,” he said.

Currently, a total of 478 thermal power plants are operating throughout Iran which includes both gas power plants and combined-cycle plants.

Over two-thirds of Iran’s thermal power plants are owned and operated by the country’s private sector and private owners are currently generating nearly 67 percent of Iran’s thermal power.

The total electricity generation capacity of Iran, currently stands at about 85,000 MW, over 90 percent of which is supplied by thermal power plants.

In September, Hamidreza Azimi, the deputy managing director for planning affairs in TPPH, announced that 1,239 MW had been added to the generation capacity of the country’s thermal power plants since the beginning of the current Iranian year.

According to data released by the Energy Ministry, from August 2013 to August 2019, a total of 69 thermal power plants were constructed across the country, to add 8,991 MW to the capacity of the country’s thermal electricity output.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Russia has chosen a new contractor to work on the Sirik Power Plant in the southern province of Hormuzagan, said Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian; the new contractor will start working on the project in the coming weeks.

Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Russian Company Technopromexport for implementing the 1,400-MW power plant project in August 2016, and the Russian side pledged to invest up to €1.2 billion in the project, IRNA reported.

The construction of the thermal power plant in Sirik started in February 2017, however, it came to a halt due to some administrative and funding problems from Russia.

“[After years of postponement] eventually, the Russian side came to the conclusion that the contractor [for the project] should be replaced. On this basis, a new contractor was selected, which is also approved by our country,” Ardakanian told IRNA.

Ardakanian noted that the credit line for this project is expected to be opened in the coming weeks and the new contractor will hopefully start the project’s executive operations.

Once fully operational, the Sirik project would add some 12 terawatt-hours (TWh) of power to Iran’s current production capacity.

The project has been described as a symbol of Russia’s growing inclination to invest in Iran at a time the United States is piling massive economic pressure on the country.

Russia has committed to other infrastructure projects in Iran worth nearly $5 billion.

In December 2019, Ardakanian said that Russia’s development projects in Iran, which include a key railway southeast of the country, as well as the mentioned power plant, would start in the current Iranian year (started March 20) after clearing administrative barriers for the transfer of funds and other issues.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s electricity generation capacity has grown by 118 megawatts (MW) following the implementation of a project to upgrade five power plants and remove their limitations, said the energy minister.

In an address to a ceremony in Tehran on Wednesday, Reza Ardakanian said the Energy Ministry has managed to expand the country’s power generation capacity with an investment equal to eight percent of the money needed for the construction of a new plant, IRNA reported.

This means that, he added, with an investment relatively smaller than what is needed for building a power plant it has become possible to make greater use of the available capitals and capacities.

The minister described the success as a great achievement for the domestic power industry.

He noted that the Energy Ministry is responsible for sustainable water and electricity supply to the people, adding that to this end, it is required to construct electricity networks as well as thermal and hydroelectric power plants.

Over the past few years, greater attention was paid to the capacities of the domestic water and electricity industries due to the imposition of US sanctions on Iran, which has led to more effective efforts for making optimum use of the available capacities and improvements in production techniques, Ardakanian said.

He added that improving the techniques has helped increase the country’s power plant capacity.

The minister noted that there had been no electricity cut-off in the country during the summer, adding that the electricity supply since June 21 has also witnessed a year-on-year increase.

He said Iran’s electricity exports have also seen a boost since the beginning of the current Iranian year (starting March 20).

Earlier, Ardakanian said the country’s electricity network will soon be linked to those of Russia and Azerbaijan in a couple of months once the synchronization studies are completed.

He added that the Iranian electricity grid could be synchronized with other grids, either through Azerbaijan, or Armenia and Georgia.

“Iran welcomes either of the two routes which gets ready first,” the minister said, adding that the three countries have agreed on a single company to implement the project.

He noted that the company has already started its work on the project.

Ardakanian described as necessary a project whose implementation is highly demanded by the three countries.

On Monday, a member of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA), said electricity exports to neighboring countries, including Pakistan, should be a priority for the Energy Ministry.

Speaking on the sidelines of a visit by an ICCIMA delegation to the Iranian Materials and Energy Research Center (MERC) in the northern province of Alborz, Hamidreza Salehi added that electricity consumption in our country is high, estimated to be 2.5 times the global average, IRNA reported.

Salehi, who serves as the head of the ICCIMA’s Energy Commission, noted that currently, 250 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity are consumed annually in Iran by households, administrative offices and the commercial-industrial sector.

He said, “Our country with an annual electricity generation of 83,000 megawatts, is ranked 14th in the world in terms of power production.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) said its supply of natural gas to power plants across the country increased by two billion cubic meters (bcm) in the four months ending July 21, allowing the country to earn $1 billion from exports of the substituted gas oil.

“Every one billion liters of gas oil product is worth $500 million in the international market,” said NIGC Managing Director Hassan Montazer Torbati, adding, “With an increase of two bcm in the supply of gas to power plants, we have seen $1 billion from exports of the product,” reported Press TV.

Torbati did not elaborate on further details, including to which country Iran had supplied its surplus gas oil.

However, reports in recent months have suggested that gas oil exports has become a major source of earning hard currency for Iran, a country that has seen its direct sale of crude reduced under a series of US sanctions.

Torbati said the total gas supplied to Iranian power plants in the first four months of the current calendar year amounted to 26 bcm, or 210 million cubic meters a day. That is nearly a fourth of current daily output of natural gas in the country.

Iran plans to reach a natural gas output target of one bcm per day by the end of the current administrative government in August 2021.

Electricity generation has seen a huge boost mainly because of the stable supply of natural gas to Iranian power plants where the use of the so-called combined-cycle systems, in which the exhaust heat from firing gas in combustion turbines is returned to the production cycle, has become more prevalent in recent years.
